The rise of American companies comes hand in hand with the rise of the digital age, explained Stephen Baker, an analyst with technology research company NPD Group Inc.
"Most of the Japanese (electronics) companies are analog companies, but most of the American companies are digital companies," Baker said. "All of the technology behind today's products is (digital)."
"I think it boils down to innovation," he said. "American firms have been the leaders in innovation lately, whereas the Japanese have sort of been tinkering with their old products, saying, 'OK, I have the technology already, can I just make it a little bit better?' "
