Controllers |OT| It's the Hall-Effect Life!

Cheers mate, I did try connecting the controller via a wire as well but it didnt connect to the app for some reason - does it need to be a specifc USB cable - like C to C?
I just use the same cable that I have for the stand, unplug the usb-c end, and plug into the controller itself. Should just connect, but when you boot the app, might need to hit a button on the connected controller for the app to pick it up, and let you go into the interface and update.

Their app was pretty finicky too about needing it to be the app you have selected, as just clicking over to my browser while it was updating the firmware, stopped the progress until I selected the app with my mouse cursor for it to have focus.

Nope, just wont do anything with the cable - doesnt recognise its connected and controller itself just flashes the xbox button then turns off.

Oh yeah, this thread! Got a quick review for ya!

Just bought the Gamesir Tengenaria Lite (called the T3 Lite on the back of the controller). Cheap $20 wired controller, but the sticks are damn near perfect! They're hall effect, seemingly anti-friction and the grit and knurling are perfect. I bought the thing for the D-Pad, which is also great, but the slick plastic makes it hard to use if your hands get sweaty, so you might need some tape.

Build quality... well it's fine for a $20 controller, so don't expect it to feel as good as a DS4 or Dualsense. It feels hollow and light and too slippery. You buy this for retro games and maybe if you fall in love with the sticks, some FPS games, but this is not a premium experience. Still fantastic for the price.

Weird, that sounds like something got screwed up then on your particular device then maybe. I have the Wuchang version of the G7 Pro, and checked that it's updated to the the latest firmware. Still works over wired.

Nyxi announced the first third party Joycons, the Nyxi Hyperion 3

their website has no specs listed yet tho.
given their previous controllers I expect at least Hall Effect Sticks, maybe TMR.

early bird price is 102€, normal price will be 145€, which seems a bit much tbh

Man I'm glad this thread popped up. I got a Switch pro controller at a local flea market for $1 but it is in really bad condition. Needs a complete shell replacement and the sticks are completely busted they don't center at all. I wanted to invest in an iron and even purchase those stick removing solder tips that supposedly help remove the old soldered in sticks with ease. I'm also gonna try and do something about the d-pad by either using a WiiU Pro dpad or add some mass to the post so the dpad doesn't press all the directions at once. Open to suggestion as my current soldering set is very dated.

Here is a small list of items I was planning on buying to do the replacement, the shell will most likely be ordered from Aliexpress:

You can probably get the sticks off AliExpress too.

If you can post progress pics of the solder job that would be great.

Try these. Green version is for Switch Pro.

I seem to have got it working! I joined the discord and there is an updater there for the controller, used that and now my headphones work again.

Forgot to test if it would connect with a wire though actually :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Yep, their discord is pretty useful. That's how I found out they're trying to get Steam Input support for the G7 Pro, but it seems like they didn't have a direct contact with Valve to make that happen in the past.

Nice, I'm just hoping 8BitDo make a bigger version of their Ultimate 2 controller. I liked everything about it, especially the price, but the smaller size cramped my hands, and I wanted grip material on the front. Looks like this at least solves the grip issue.

Gamepadla software is official Steamworks partner. So software for testing controllers could end up on Steam soon.

That's pretty sick, hoping that also means Valve will reach out to more of these third-party makers to build Steam Input support then too if the sight that tests these controllers is getting Steamworks partnership.

One thing I've been messing around with that I'm gonna share sometime this week is my adventures in HOTAS (hands on throttle-and-stick) controls . I messed around initially with a Thrustmaster HOTAS One that was on clearance at Best Buy. Had a ton of fun playing Everspace 2 and Ace Combat 7 vs using a normal gamepad to fly. In my typical fashion though, I ended because it was a cheaper model wondering what a stronger offering would look like comparison wise, so I ended up picking up a VKB Gladiator NXT Evo left Omni-Throttle & right Space Combat stick pair. Kind of night and day difference, with a contact-less gimbal so no plastic rubbing that can drift the stick like potentiometer analog sticks on a gamepad.

Only issue I'm finding with some games is since these are two separate sticks, they are read as 2 different controllers, and some games that do have hotas support will only read the first controller it reads at once, instead of letting me bind both. I can get around it with Joystick Gremlin, that will essentially merge the two inputs together as one vertical joystick to be read by the game, but I'd really like if Steam Input in future could do this instead...since it basically automates this for the left + right Switch joycons to merge them as one input device if you have them both individually paired via bluetooth.

They need to put a more modern rumble mechanism in them, I mean, the EasySMX S10 has HD rumble (and NFC) - and it's a 40 Eurodollars joypad - while the Ultimate 2 which is a 70 Eurodollars one still has normal rumble.

The Ultimate 2 size was perfectly fine for me , then again, different people= different hand sizes so there's that...

VKB is good stuff. I have their mini rudder pedals, which are really simple and solid. If you're looking for a sturdy table mount for those, I recommend Monstertech.

Which games require you to merge the two sticks into a single device? I actually had to split my throttle into two devices so that Elite Dangerous could use all of the buttons, as it only supports 32 keybinds per device. But you can assign as many simultaneous controllers as you like.

Usually older stuff like MechWarrior 4 only support one device sadly. I tried to configure my FCS hotas but couldn't figure out the Thrustmaster target software crap for it to be able to use the throttle so just kept using stick + keyboard for it.

Throttle seems the same as TWCS which is good for me since it means it will be supported for longer (jus like the old green T16000M is virtually the same as the FCS stick). But also weird cos the stick seems much higher end so that throttle is a bit of a mismatch, they could made a dual one at least.

The first game to actually require merging the two VKB sticks together was actually Ace Combat 7 for me. It had out of the box support for certain HOTAS controllers like the Thrustmaster HOTAS One because it's one the few that work on consoles. However, even that device merges the throttle and stick together in one usb cable.

Wasn't too hard to figure out, using vjoy + Joystick Gremlin you can merge them as one virtual joystick, and supports profiles + some other cool customization. I know some people mentioned in helped with Project Wingman, though I was able to still have the 2 work while separate. Some older flight combat and mech games from the 2000s though often didn't have support for reading multiple control inputs at once, and I think if I want to get HOTAS controls on some older console games via emulation I'd have to merge them too.

Not a big deal though, most of the big games I wanted like Chorus, Elite Dangerous, Everspace 1-2, Overload, Star Wars Squadrons, & X4 just worked out of the box. X4 even had a preset for my exact VKB left omni-throttle, right Space Edition stick combo. The Monstertech mounts look good, but I went over my budget on these sticks, so I might have to opt for something cheaper in the short term. If I end up getting more into the HOTAS/HOSAS thing, I might get some rudder pedals at some point, but they kinda seem like the thing not to cheap out on.

Yeah, better rumble is still an area where third-party controllers in general could be better...but I don't ever want to go back to stick that aren't as good as TMR + lock-out triggers with actual switches.

I'm sure for plenty of people the Ultimate 2 is big enough, it's just that 8BitDo don't make any pads that are bigger, and all of them are smaller than a first-party PS5 or Xbox controller.

Rudder pedals are a real game changer. I started with a CH Products rudder, which is cheap and effective. My current VKB T-Rudder doesn't have toe brakes, but you don't really need those for space sims. The pedals are very small and have vertical travel, so you can use them under a desk with a wheeled chair without having everything slide around like normal forward/backward pedals do.

That said, I'm going to get a set with toe brakes again for flight sims. The new Virpil ones look excellent and they have a sale on until the 30th. Paying them off over the six months it will take to get them delivered makes them seem almost cheap.

Oddly enough, I had already saved some bookmarks for the VKB T-Rudders and the Virpil R1-FALCON rudders. Also looked at the Windwing WW Orion ones too.

If I'm going to bother, I'd prefer to get something that is mostly metal construction, so it lasts. I've also been trying to buy hardware that has good compatibility with Linux as I'll probably shift away from Windows over time. Even though VKB's sticks work great out of the box on Linux...the T-Rudders from what I read had some compatibility quirks there vs the Virpil and Windwing rudders.

Yeah, I'm surprised they haven't made a better one to pair with it, but I at least saw a video with that trottle where adjust the underneath screw + some grease makes it work considerably better.

There's currently a fundraiser on gamepadla for testing newest Machenike controller which caught my attention this way, not gonna lie. Not that I am donating anything.

Seems to be doing decent numbers in initial tests they published, and they seem to have used Prometeus tester.

I'm curious when the certified tests drop how this will fair with their marketing tests.

Someone has accidentally listed a review sample on order page and Guilikit actually shipped it.

Initial thoughts and impressions on unfinished unit, it probably was manufactured before the delay so take it with a grain of salt.

I have asked the guy to confirm if his unit has plastic or metal axis on triggers, and if bumpers behave more like KK3 Max/Pro or ES Pro - we will see what he has to say.

The controller comes with Hyperlink 2 adapter included BTW.

Dpad is amazing apparently otherwise shell is almost the same Guilikit QC like ES Pro or KK3 Max/Pro so don't expect to for it to feel premium but not the cheapest one also.

I guess we will see early next year how good it really is.

Hoping somewhere in that live event will be Steam Input support on the G7 Pro. 🤞
Yup, also it would be funny if they dropped a sale page of new Tarantulas before TT Max and Pro. Since they have mentioned "a new" symmetrical controller in their Discord post. Or maybe it is something entirely new. I'm gonna watch this stream to find out for sure. Expect me to maybe even drop my thoughts during live in here 🤜.

Hopefully if it's a new version of the Tarantulas, the new one fixes the latency issues for people vs the old one.

Is there a stream for the reveal?
Edit: I feel dumb, lmao.

Probably?

Edit: $149 I guess I'll go with another company or maybe one of their other options

that's still cheaper than direct competitors with similar features.

the Razer Wolverine V3 Tournament Edition is 120€ usually and is wired only. the wireless Pro version is around 180€.

it being wireless, having multiple sticks, replaceable button switches, TMR sticks and coming with a charger, makes it pretty damn cheap comparatively.

it also is a fully featured PC controller, which many Xbox controllers are not.
1000hz polling rate and full motion control support on PC is a great value add imo.

before, if I wanted an 8bitdo for my Xbox and my PC, I'd need 2 separate controllers to have all the features on both systems.

I think GameSir is supposed to announce something soonish as well. I'll hold out to see what's coming before pulling the trigger on another controller
They will, that's why I messed up my reply... 🤣.
