Controllers |OT| It's the Hall-Effect Life!

Wasn't able to snag a Steam Controller. It's sold out.
I'm ordering that Brook Wingman for the PS2 today.
Any word on the 8bitdo Ultimate 3E? no new news.
Both me and Durin Durin couldn't even get past the payment - did it sold out that instantly, lmao?

3E has May/June launch date so nothing precise yet.

Fuck, now the G7 pro 8k date changed to may 12th sigh. Im getting this instead of steam controller. Atleast i can use this on all launcher without messing with steam overlay and also switch 2 support
I'm really enjoying Xeno Plus, and G7 Pro 8k uses the same sticks.

I bet you won't be disappointed, if you know that Dpad is a bit wobbly. Other than that I think with updated sticks it will punch above it's weight for sure.

They fixed the DPAD in the 8K versions

It didn't sell out until like 30 something minutes but their payment processor kept spitting out errors. I managed to snag one. Hope it lives up to the hype. At the very least the touchpads should be a great help for playing X4. I might even try playing CK3 with it.

Should've just spammed the button I guess, because I tried to space it out thinking that would help.

Wouldn't even let me get to the Paypal prompt, already had one in my cart a few mins before 10am.

Had the same issue with the Steam Deck on launch though, but at least my copy of Gran Turismo 7 came in today to play with.

I could see X4 and other Space Sims being way easier to control with the touchpads for interface, along with all the different buttons, and doing radial menus on the left pad.

Yeah, I already play X4 with a controller but I have to switch to KB/M for management stuff. By using the back buttons as toggles I can use one touchpad for more hot keys than I need and keep the other touchpad purely as a mouse.

I'd imagine the haptic squeeze for gyro to look around the ship would be cool too. X4 is still on my backlog just because it's a dense game, but looked cool.

I clicked on a button and got rejections for 40 minutes while talking to a friend, but finally I got through to the final page of checkout and my order went through. Persistence paid off! There must have been strong demand.
SC, of course.

Edit:
Added to basket at 1 minute before the hour, and my screenshot of successfuk purchase was 42 minutes later. Perhaps I was very lucky

Steam Controller reservations are open for those of us that didn't spam buttons as much, lmao.

On the other note:

Storm is available on GadgetHyper. But I just reserved Steam Controller so I will sit this one out. Apparently it uses JS13 TMR sticks, which G7 Pro 8k, Xeno Plus and Steam Controller uses too. I already have Xeno Plus and will have SC, so honestly I don't know if I should order Storm in a near future, lmao.

Valve are not happy with the scalping, it seems. Good. Sucks for people that genuinely want more than 1, but hopefully the mere existence of the reservations kills off the scalping market for this controller.

My controller is still in packaged phase. The only thing I can do is be patient.

I cannot give a detailed impression of the Steam Controller since I'm not technical enough but I have to say that it feels rather cramped. Might take a while to get used to it but in terms of how it rests on my hands, it's comfortable enough however for me the handles are not angled enough.

EDIT: Also, I typed this post using the controller. Desktop functionality seems similar enough to the Deck when using it in desktop mode.

EDIT2: Getting the hang of it. I still think Dualsense is comfier but after some time with Crimson Desert I've adjusted to the point it no longer bothers me. What does bother me are the XBOX glyphs. Steam really should let you fool a game that you're using a Dualshock or Dualsense, I much prefer seeings PlayStation symbols than letters. I really do appreciate games that let you chose what prompts to display.

Have you tried to check out the Steam Input options in the game page? Fairly certain you can do that from there.

I'd really like to see a use case for the Grip Sense thing. It kinda assumes you never adjust your hand so it's prone to unintended inputs. I need convincing that it's actually useful.

Nope, otherwise I'd have already done that for my Steam Deck.

Got my shipping email from Valve. I'll be thinking about grip ideas yet_another_alt yet_another_alt , but I think the most common will be gyro related. Depends how granular the settings are. I'm sure RambleTan on YouTube will come up with all sorts of very complex stuff before long

Same here on the Storm. It looks cool, but with Steam Controller arriving before long I just can't justify it. Perhaps later this summer.

Got my steam controller today.

First impressions (from maybe 5 minutes of use)

  • Nice heft/feel to the controller, it doesn't feel flimsy or "hollow"
  • Puck magnets are on point, it takes effort to detach the controller from it.
  • Shoulder buttons are awkward to tap imo. The ergonomics of the controller are set up in such a way that my index fingers sit lower on the body of the controller so I feel a noticeable tweak in my wrists when trying to tap them (this is a personal issue with old man wrists and may not be an issue for normal folks at all).
  • I am spoiled by switch based buttons and I would have easily paid $40 to $60 more for switch interfaces versus the pad ones Valve went with.
  • Dpad feels squishy, but I need to play some platformers with it..just an off the cuff impression there.
  • Thumb pads feel awesome and are very responsive. Windows interactions are fantastic so far and I had no need to grab my keyboard for the living room rig.

Will dive into customization tonight but so far my initial impressions are good.

Review in progress: 7 out of 10

I got my Steam Controller yesterday and have dabbled a bit with it. I really like it overall but there's a couple issues that will need to be ironed out either by developers or Valve (depending on who it falls to).

- I have a wired Dualsense (for a non-steam gacha game that I can't get added properly but it has full DS support) and if it's plugged in at the same time as the Steam Controller there seems to be weird joystick inputs. Like in an indie game I'm playing the joystick loses the ability to be used for movement but if I unplug one controller it's fine. But when I played Pragmata I saw no issues when both were plugged in. Then again the gacha game I'm playing (NTE) I saw some weird camera movements that were a little weird but I had chalked up to automatic camera adjustment but maybe it wasn't. I dunno.

- The other issue was that I'm a dummy and figured it out.

actually kind of hilarious

Got my Steam Controller today. The thing is awesome. Feels incredible in my hands. Going to put in some more time with it before giving my full thoughts, but I'm loving what I'm seeing so far.

Pretty sick that we have access to all these controllers through Steam Input.

Sucks that the Xbox Controllers don't show battery life through Steam. Also I hope Valve gets around to adding Switch 2 Joycon support, and Pro 2 Controller support over Bluetooth.

What's so special about the 3E from 8bitdo that makes it worth waiting for? Seems like the Gamesir I ended up with is basically the same thing.

We will see, but I expect better materials than on G7 Pro + switchable ABXY.

Along with a set of different heights of thumb caps, and better impulse triggers and rumble than in G7 Pro. From what I remember 3-Mode was a blast to play Silent Hill 2 remake with, in terms of vibrations. So I think they may step their game yet again in that department.

Will they use JS13 sticks, we shall see.

I ain't buying it day one that's for sure. It's wait and see for me because we don't know anything concrete at the moment whatsoever.

I'm just going with my previous experience with Xbox branded 8BitDo controller in the past. But they have cheaped out on Hall Effect sticks then which was a bummer. I got personally burned out quite a few times with 8BitDo in the past, with either their QC or software, or weird decisions like capping polling rate or them doing a hiend controller feeling wise but cheapening out on good stick modules, so yeah I'm gonna wait this time, no preorders.

Got my G7 Pro 8K champion edition today. First impressions are super positive. This looks and feels like a premium controller. The grips are super nice, bottoms are rougher, the top are smooth premium finish. Dpad is okay, could be a bit better i guess, face buttons are nice and clicky, but its not loud. Bumpers and triggers also feels super nice, but the real star of the show are the sticks. They are super smooth and now i can play with 0 deadzone in games and with these sticks, my long distance aim accuracy improved a ton. Really nice controller so far. Only negative thing is the basic rumble, im used to the great dualsense haptics

Got the Brook Wingman for my PS2. Works as advertised. I tested it with a PS5 and a Series X controller.
It powers the Brook Wingman from the port. I've got a super slim, but the instructions say some ps2 models might need external power.
My biggest complaint is it's only for one player. 1 device one port.
It was easy and fast to get connected.
You will need a cheat sheet for all the button combination options. Like turbo on/off.

It's nice to know I don't have to use old PS2 controllers. I'll keep em in a drawer though. Not going to chuck them till they wear out.

Someone managed to open-source a dualsense PC dongle that can retain most of the features wirelessly! Might try to get my hands on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2W and print a case for it.

I've been messing with the windows over the past week or so and I continually get hard pc crashes. At one point I got a message stating "A recent update was removed due to stability issues when booting into windows".

Cannot confirm this has anything to do with the adapter or in fact a shitty windows update. Will give it a try on a few of my steam machines this weekend and see how it fairs there.

Cheers for the linux distro post!

Do let us now how it fairs there.

I don't have DualSense anymore so I can't test stuff yet, I've been actually wondering myself if I should buy it and mod it with TMRs but dunno.

I like Linux a lot, to the point it's my main OS basically so I tend to tinker with a lot controllers in there too. It would be best to know what I'm getting myself into at least. For future reference.

Is it true that dongle can OC DualSense to 1000Hz polling rate?

I believe the compiled windows firmware does OC the pico w to account for the audio requirements but I don't use controller audio so cannot speak to that quality.
WIll test both the Edge and the regular dual sense and let ya know!

My SC arrived yesterday. Which was a surprise, because the only shipping notice I got at the beginning end of the chain was that the Netherlands courier had collected but not shipped.

I am a fan, which won't be a surprise to many ITT. I went straight into Lords of the Fallen to do some testing, made a config to get round some annoying flaws in the built in layout, and had a great time. I miss coming up with intuitive bindings.

Not having used a Deck, some of the details are new to me, like the touch pads not having an actual click but instead a haptic fake click. SO much better.

I haven't yet got muscle memory for the layout, and I'm still tweaking the ideal hand positioning that allows me to have 1 finger on LR1/2 so I can have 2 for 4/5 without index strain, because 2 fingers up top isn't natural for me and a finger for each of the 4 buttons per side definitely doesn't work. Maybe I'll try 2 up and 1 under when I get home.

No use for grips yet, but maybe if I do an inverse binding I can find an intuitive action layer.

I haven't owned anything from CRKD, but a friend's kid uses the Nitro Deck for the Switch and gave it a good review.

I ended up pre-ordering the CRKD controller. Initially, it was set to ship late June, but I just received an email that they're pushing back pre-order shipments until late July.

Article:
Steam Controller getting added to SDL Library

Saw this today. Apparently any games that use the SDL library in their gamepad input system, will get Steam Controller support. Meaning that the Steam Controller can act as a standard pad without the Steam app being on in the background, or the game not being able to be read by Steam Input at all.

Not full-proof since I think Game Pass stuff from Microsoft still largely relies on Xinput, but still useful for other games outside Steam, and open-source titles on Linux. Otherwise, I think SISR, or using action sets with the desktop layout to make a generic gamepad profile is still the fix for games that won't launch with the Steam Overlay.

The $15 GameSir DualSense knockoff is SMOKING my G7 Pro is terms of comfort and happiness. Sure I don't sound like a tweaker going to town on 4 gaming mice, but it's comfortable. The membrane buttons feel like a video game controller and not some sweat device. I'm sure I'll dust off the G7 for racing games and whatever, but for just pick up and play, it's INSANE the value GameSir gives for $15 with the Tegenaria Lite. I'm THRILLED that Valve didn't put those clicker switches in the Steam Controller. I'm sure they're nice and all for sweats, but it really spoils the relaxation vibe I'm going for when I play games.

BeardSpike BeardSpike Just saw this on 8Bitdo's insta story.. Preorders for the Ultimate 3E are starting in May 26th.

Edit: There's also a Lavender version on their website:

That's sexy, ordering one.

Future Mojhon Storm buyers be aware Storm got delisted on GadgetHyper and people on Gadget Discord say that there's and software/firmware issue not yet addressed by Mojhon / BigBigWon. Might be the reason Gadget has it delisted currently so they won't take any heat from this.

We stumbled upon it with Diseased Yak Diseased Yak while googling a bit for it and I just checked Discord out of curiosity since I was positive Gadget had it.

Mojhon is staying quiet about issues on socials.

I don't usually like the lighter colors for gamepads, but this looks nice.

Is it still the same size as the Ultimate 2, or flared out more like their upcoming elite controller they're doing?
