And I was gonna ask if anyone recommended a bitrate that would be a good balance between quality and size.

But I googled and found a few interesting answers. The most interesting (to me anyways) shown here:

http://www.fliptech.net/bitrate.shtml

I'd like nearest to CD quality...so 320 would have been the obvious choice, but I also need to stick in 4 CDs worth onto one mp3 CD, 320 would have been too high. I'm forced to go to 256, and by the looks of that link I posted, it's not a bad choice.

So hopefully anyone else having the same question is a bit enlightened on the possibilities.

256kbps CBR is a good bitrate, but i'd recommend 192kbps VBR as well for size. It really depends on the quality of your player, connections, speakers, etc. But in the end, charts and graphs are nice, but it comes down to what you can hear.

i'd also recommend ripping your stuff to a lossless format on your PC (FLAC, APE, SHN, etc.) then converting that to your MP3 bitrate of choice. It'll save you the trouble of reripping if you aren't satisfied with your bitrate.

LAME --alt-preset standard.

Problem solved. Best quality vs. size. Extensive ABX testing proves APS is audibly transparent for >99% of CDs. A highly tweaked and tested setting. Learn more here:

If you use LAME 3.95 or higher (I recommend using the latest, 3.96.1), then you can simply use the -V 2 switch. Same thing as APS. Read a guide on configuring Exact Audio Copy to use LAME and you can encode CDs with just a couple of mouse clicks.
