Cord Cutters unite!

I cut the cord completely as soon as Fiber was made available in my area.

This time of year is when I actually see 'regular' television due to visiting Family and Friends.

The commercials! I can't take it.

Going into 2020 what are your plans for entertainment?

Enjoying Cable still? Or going to go full streaming?

My subs:

Prime
Hulu
Netflix 4K
Disney+
YouTube Premium

I have more entertainment than I know what t do with... and it's fantastic.

I think people take the term cord cutting to mean cutting cable out of the equation in favour of paying for streaming solutions.

I don't see it that way.

It's not really cutting the cord it's just switching it for a more "a la carte" solution. It's something that can also be a lot more expensive.

True cord cutting is using solutions like OTA to supplement other avenues that don't require a service to acquire content.

I share some accounts with family members.

Sling - shared
Netlfix - shared
Vudu - shared
Amazon - not Prime but have lots of digital TV content and movies

I haven't watched italian normal television in like 20 years maybe?!

I download everything and some months i have netflix, i'm covered.

Completely DVD/Blurays and independent content creators via Youtube or other streaming platforms (loving DLive's platform and features, been watching this week since Owen Benjamin was booted off YT and migrated there). Only thing I subscribe to is Amazon Prime for shipping deals, and honestly the video is just an extra that I don't really use very much.

I have been off the mainstream teat for some time now, and I tell you, you don't miss it once it's gone. There are so many better things to do with your time than support Hollywood and mainstream garbage.

How much do you pay vs cable?
It does have advantages of watching whatever you want whenever but it can't be quite expensive. Only reason I do keep cable is to watch my local sports for free and local news.

Ahh Sports, this is the one they have everyone on. It's the biggest seller of Cable.

I believe we have so many choices now that you can streamline your entertainment, which is great!

I was mainly curious as to how most are getting their media going forward.

I pay $50 a month for Fiber that's lifetime with the house.

That plus the subs above.

I'll probably stick with the "cord"

Cuz as soon as I cut it, then I'll remember this and that unpopular programming I used to watch, but suddenly no longer available.

Plus Spectrum (TWC) is starting to get some competition lately, so I think rates will be going down in my area.
I have no problem switching from cable to fibre though. My cable box feels like a laggy Win 7 HP.

I came here thinking of "umbilical cords" .. Sorry, carry on😂

I have Netflix, Prime (yearly, and I use all of its services) and Crunchyroll (yearly) for a while, and will be doing 12 months of Hulu for $1.99 a month from a Black Friday deal.

I may drop Netflix, though.

I cut cable and only have Prime and Spectrum has a small bundle of streaming channels with my internet.

I don't have interest in having like a half dozen streaming services. I don't pirate and just buy movies or tv shows on iTunes or Vudu.

I'm seeing less and less reason to even have cable/satellite, really all you need is a digital antenna, and your stream content from the likes of Netflix. It's still cheaper.

Thanks for the laugh. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

The big secret - when you put up an HD Antenna. it will pick up HD perfect clarity 1080P channels.

The signal is digital, you will either get the channel or you wont.

My Cable was creeping up to $200 a month when I cut it. $2400 a year... for commercials.

That is true, you kinda get used to low jpeg quality cable until you switch back to standard digital broadcast.

Cable is expensive indeed. I'm either not ready or just too "old dog" to switch. I've budgeted in $150/month, anyways so it's just a part of convenience I pay for, while there are things others pay for that I save on.

I watch my kid and their generation coming up. I don't know if they will ever do Cable. All they watch is Youtube / Netflix.

and if this is telling... what's the playground talk? The Mandolorian starring Baby Yoda.

I do think it's incredible that we can now pick which way we want to view things. This was a dream back in the 90's..

It's also why more and more Streaming services will keep popping up. Something for everyone.

I have Netflix and Prime, but mainly watch youtube. I ditched my TV license a couple of years ago, now, and don't miss it in the slightest. I'll stream the occasional sporting event.

The internet has shortened my attention span to the point where I don't even watch movies much anymore. Unless it's something I've already seen.

Yeah I haven't watched a movie in ages. I've developed a few hobbies that have taken over film. It's amazing to think back when I/we used to be satisfied with a bottle of wine, and sit on the sofa for 2-3 hours just relaxing with a movie and popcorn. For the same reason, I barely play games, I was pretty much only playing Forza anyways towards the end.

It may be weird, but streaming services allow too much freedom for me. I like to work with scheduled events, it kinda regiments my life like a to do list. If I had the freedom to watch some crime show whenever I wanted, i'd never plan accordingly. But when you tell me it's coming on Wed at 8PM, I know that's exactly what I'll be doing. That was the way I grew up. As a family, we all got together and watched whatever primetime TV was scheduled for the evening.

TBH I'm also just a bit leery of how many internet based services I connect myself to. I don't want to keep signing up for this and that.

But the internet requires a cord to work properly without cancer.

Finally cancelled my Netflix sub that I hardly ever used back in November. I still have U-VERSE cable, but that's mostly on for background noise... I'll probably cancel it when the contract is up.

Really, I'm perfectly happy with adding to the bluray collection and watching movies at the theater these days. Over-the-air sports is probably the only other thing that I watch regularly.

It's not difficult to cut the cord at all if you utilize streaming sites out there (YouTube TV, Hulu Live etc.) can save you some $.

You are going to be surprised how much YouTube can fill this Void.

Ha- you are old school! I do love how much free time I get back. Plenty of things to do!

I was downloading all of my TV and movies by like 2006. It was the "wrong" route at that time since there weren't actually options yet for streaming. Now I can actually pay for Netflix, Prime, Hulu, ect. And I totally do!

But back then, it was the wild west. And I don't know if I've watched more than 5 things on live TV in these last 13 years (not a sports fan). When I see a commercial now, it looks so foreign. Cutting the cord has never felt like a mistake in any way.

I have Netflix still, but I think another price increase will finally bump me out of there. They have several good TV shows, most of which I've already seen. Their originals are hit or miss, not enough to keep me around long term for sure. I really hate that they don't have many good movies anymore. I was hoping they'd start buying out some licenses for some solid 80s/90s movies like Goonies, Big Trouble in Little China, Kindergarten Cop, etc, but either the license holders won't give them up or Netflix doesn't see the value in it.

Anyway, I also pay for Amazon Prime, but it's not related to the content. I did watch the entire River Monsters series which was a lot of fun, but their stuff is mostly hit or miss as well. I do love the last season of The Boys, though, hope this new one is good.

My gf subscribes to that Hulu/Disney+ pack so we added that to my TV, but we haven't made much use out of it.

If content further gets split up with even more storefronts and subscriptions, I'll likely just go back to er...watching them elsewhere...and cancelling all of my subs (minus Prime of course for other reasons). It's really frustrating that the film/tv industries learned nothing from the music industry and MP3 shit from years ago.

Cable/satellite is an absolute scam these days, and I always encourage people to cut the cord when applicable. I heard just today that DTV is raising their price again despite being in a freefall of losing customers already.

Really for me it comes down to 2 things, convenience and NO ADS. I was surprised at how awful ads were while watching TV until we fired up a show on Hulu the other day. It's really jarring if you've been ad-free for a while.

I cut cable but I still have AT&T TV which is sort of the same thing I guess. The wife won't let me cancel it. I only use it to watch local channels that I could get for free. Also have -

Netflix
Amazon
HBO Go ($5 add on to AT&T TV)
Hulu (Black Friday Deal)
Apple TV+ (Free for One Year)
Disney+ (Free with Verizon)
YouTube Red

I run my own Plex server and will be dropping Netflix on the 18th for Disney+. I'm just waiting for more original content before I get it.
I would rather watch the videos I currently own instead of watching a whole bunch of new stuff.

After ripping most of my DVDs to Plex. I now don't know what to with these things.

I unplugged the tv cable a few years ago. Croatian tv is shit anyways.
I only pay this:
Internet connection -- 28 usd a month, 30/5 mbit, flat rate, no cap.
Netflix -- 6 usd a month (4 people using this, that's why it's so cheap)
ExpressVPN -- about 7 usd a month. Not that I really want a vpn but I have to use it to access American version of Netflix.

That's about it. For music needs I just use youtube.

Haven't had cable for maybe a decade or more. TV is just not that interesting and commerical suck my ass.

Watch YouTube mainly, and if there is something I need to watch I call my friend with an eye patch and parrot to help me out. He even hooks me up with my Habs. Good guy.

Can't understand people throwing money away on 150-200$ cable bills. But you do you.

I would suggest ditch your cable and spend more time on GAF. :messenger_savoring:

I worked with this 55 year old lady who seemed to be going on 75. She still had a flip phone because "money is very tight right now and I have to be careful with my monthly bills."

Fair enough, but then I find out months later that she pays $170/month on cable. And she does it just to watch shows on TLC! I tried so hard to help her understand what Vue was and some other streaming options that could get her the same shows for a fraction of the cost but it was like talking to a wall that was even dumber than other walls.

I think she also may still have an AOL subscription.

I call this the K B Toys syndrome. Remember these stores at the mall. They always had EVERY videogame in stock! For $80...... This store survived on ignorance.

Ah yes, who hasn't cord cut yet? I got a few myself, but they're all paused until I get my finances in order.

I got:
Hulu - paused (could bill with Sprint plan, but decided not to)
Disney+ - cancelled, didn't think I'd use much
Netflix - shared with parents
Crunchyroll - paused

Plus my brother's Plex server he hosts out of his house. He has a gigabit fiber line so he allows outside access for us to use it.

That is, if your stations come in clearly. Our NBC and FOX stations seem to be the most notorious for having signal issues. (Our CBS station does due to it's city of license but solves it by having a satellite station within the city)

My daughter is 5. She saw her first commercial about a month ago. She just couldn't understand what it was. Good riddance.
My son is 20. We haven't had any sort of "standard" TV service since before he was born. He and I stayed at my mom's house for a few days last year over the holidays, and I believe that was his first exposure to TV commercials. Obviously, he hated it.

Honestly it's the extra features that I want to hold onto.... for some reason. I still bust out my rarer discs from time to time.
I still do this for the original Ghostbusters. There is a great commentary with the creators with an MST3K overlay on the movie. I need to check and see if it is also on the BluRay release.
