Corpse Party |OT| You thought your high school was hell

Just finished Chapter 2 (I only play a bit each night)

Awesome way to show how time is different in the varying closed spaces. I didn't notice massive blood pool missing in Ch.2 that was there in Ch.1, and then it ended up being Mayu's remains... When in Ch.1 that had already occurred, yet in Ch.2 Seiko's death had already happened.
... Time is a crazy thing!

I wasn't going to buy any more PSP games, but this topic and the overall premise have me interested (just beat 999).

I will be buying this game tonight. Just wanted to say thanks to XSEED for localizing this!

Bought it, couldn't wait for EU release.

Question: Exchapters - after completing the main chapters or play them as they unlock? Also Chapter 1
What is the other wrong end besides the one in infirmary?

I'd say play them as they unlock. They only unlock when they're relevant, basically, and they contain no spoilers for anything you haven't already seen by that point.

As for the second wrong ending in chapter 1, you need to go through the whole chapter WITHOUT going into that room containing the newspaper. It's... kind of obtuse. Probably the most obtuse wrong end in the game. But also creepy enough to be worthwhile, even if the payoff isn't until the VERY, VERY END.

I had been wondering about that. Geez, when I booted up the game to quickly run in quickly (and turned off because I couldn't see the screen well) I failed to even realize I could go in there, it was only when poking later I saw I could.
At the time I thought I stumbled on the first Wrong End...

Rarrrrrrrrrgh, I did all this work in Ch5 to be met with a bad end. Spoilers about what I did and stuff, soooo be warned.

Not sure where I went wrong. I got Naomi/Ayumi (I'm bad with names), and sent Ayumi/guy to where the incinerator was. I then went to the principal's office, navigated the tunnels, guy dragged body away, took Yuki to the restroom, then came back and they did the chant and then it just reset back to the start and was a bad end. I've explored a bit but I really couldn't see where there was a clear split in what I could do.

Also end of CH4 was
disturbing and made me sick to my stomach.

Decided to do EXCh.1 before moving onto Ch.3

That gentleman ghost = awesome character. Being voiced by Tomokazu Sugita (I believe?) certainly helped, but... Priceless.

Actually, I intentionally
avoided reading the newspaper since i was told not to read it. It's a bit frustrating the game 'forces' you to read it, which in my probably wrong reading of the game, leads to seiko's death since she loses her piece of paper during that even (and builds up anger from the other girl towards her). Of course, she dies in any case, but still. I didn't realize i was supposed to do something which i had just been told not do do :)

Other than that, the game is great fun, mostly because i have never played anything alike, and while a bit cheap, the scares are well made.
not a big fan of the fan service on the younger girl. seriously japan.

Make sure you read ALL of Naho's Notes AND THEN visit the reference room on 3F *before* speaking with Satoshi et al. across the gap. If you fail to get all of Naho's Notes, you're locked into a wrong ending path, and if you enter the reference room BEFORE reading all of Naho's Notes, you're locked into a wrong ending path. And if you speak to Satoshi et al. before doing either of these things, you're locked into a wrong ending path.

Also, for the TRUE true ending, don't take Yuka to the bathroom. Seriously, that affects things. ;) Though you're most likely going to want to take her to the bathroom to get the alternate ending, since the alternate ending is also pretty cool.

Harriet: Trust me, that wasn't the trigger
for Seiko's death
. Keep playing -- you'll learn more at the end.

For some reason, I met with everyone on the 3rd floor before completing Naho's notes but still got the true ending (gold star). Maybe I might be misremembering though.

Fucking A, I said it before, but Corpse Party was really out of left field for me. I didn't really follow it or watched any of the trailers. Just saw the topic and little bits of hype here and there. But here I am, having picked it up on Thanksgiving and finishing it today. I'm a total fan now, that was absolutely fantastic!

Please XSeed! Bring over Book of Shadows! I know it's more of an append, but I really love more expansion on this world.

Also on a different note. Asami Imai is the best :D I fell in love with her from Idolm@ster, and from there and on, she hasn't disappointed. Steins Gate... and now Corpse Party.

Hm, I've got a set of saves so I thiiiiiiink I'm ok. Though which one is the
reference room? I'm not sure I found all of Naho's notes though.

The one before the pentagram on the third floor, the library looking room. There are 5 Naho notes.

Kiryogi: Contrary to what people have been saying, Book of Shadows really IS a proper sequel. Not in the sense that its events take place after the story of the first game (though that's true for one chapter), but in the sense that it really does a lot to expand upon and flesh out the story of the first game. Not counting the one chapter that advances the story, half the game takes place BEFORE Corpse Party, showing some of the events leading up to it... and the other half takes place after one of the wrong endings from the original game, showing a series of "what if" scenarios that help flesh out a lot of the side characters who didn't get much screen time the first time around (like Mayu and Morishige).

It's definitely a must-play for fans of the original, and we're really hoping the first game ends up selling well so we can justify working on the second to the powers that be. Because let me tell you, I *really* want to work on Book of Shadows. ;)

How goes that ending thing? You can recover a save before an ending and doing other stuff for getting another ending? Or there is some hidden stuff that you have to do during chapters to get a certain ending and you have to restart the whole game to get it?

Each chapter is isolated, so if one only has a save past some point of no return that forces a specific Wrong End, then one can just start the chapter over.

Oh, something that caught my eye that I didn't go back to.

I want to sayyyyy it's the end of Ch4, or maybe Ch5. (Not a real plot spoiler, but there's your warning)

The point where the earthquake happened and Satoshi got hit by the ceiling beam. I swore he said something like his hand feels like it's in meat or something. Then he got embarassed and saw it was Naomi. I have to ask if I'm seeing things, and if I did read correctly, I have to go "....wut." I just hope I read that wrong, or it was something else entirely.

End of chapter 4 made my stomach churn so bad. At least for me, that's the worst I've ever seen in the horrors I've played. Not even Saya's Song was as bad to me.

For anybody who cares to read it, my EGM review for Corpse Party is now up!

I found myself nodding and agreeing with your review although I don't find the graphics to be that big of a detraction. They are basic but because they are so basic they force your brain to fill in alot of the little details and when accompanied by the game's excellent audio the end result turns out to be far more effective than if the graphics had been more "real".

I had no idea about the RPG Maker stuff. That sort of blew me away. Admittedly, most of the game's effectiveness comes from the writing, scenarios and audio but to think this experience was crafted with a very low tech, off the shelf framework is pretty darn impressive.

The guys at GrisGris are talented (and very possibly disturbed) and I wonder what they could do if given a bigger budget and access to better hardware. Would the end result be as compelling?

Anyway, great review. You pretty much nailed what makes the game so good.

That's pretty much what Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is. :) Still not a HUGE-budget production or anything, but it is a noticeably higher-budget game, partially because they dropped the RPGMaker engine and went instead with an engine programmed by Mages, the creators of Steins;Gate.

In many ways, I actually prefer the gameplay of the original... but Book of Shadows is still a VERY impressive game story-wise, and shows that they've very definitely "still got it." ;)

Actually, I totally agree with that. I tried to talk about coming to that realization here...

Those graphics that make Corpse Party look like a budget release from the 16-bit era? You come to have a deep appreciation for them. On one hand, had the game been your typical big-budget high-definition Western release, its gore could have felt like every other game that overloads us with virtual violence. On the other, the simplicity of what you’re seeing on screen helps the developers craft better and more impactful scares via other methods.

...but maybe I didn't do a good enough job expressing my point on that. *heh* The only part of the game's graphics I actually found bad were the sprites. Yeah, okay, them being as terrible as they are is maybe a charm point. But really, when the rest of the graphics were visually sharp 16-bit level stuff, having weirdly blurry character sprites just didn't sit well with me. Plus, you know, you have things like Ayumi's hair. *laughs*

Things seem to be wrapping up on that end. We should be announcing the European release date shortly. I'll post in here again as soon as it's been cleared for announcement.

You guys won't have much longer to wait!

Is this game Download only ?

Because I've been searching every game store in a 50 miles radius for a Physical copy and no luck ...
It's download only, if you go to the PSN store it'll have the "exclusive to Playstation Network" banner on it. I usually hate that kind of crap, but in this case it may be useful to remember to check first on a game that interests you. It's also likely the only practical way to release it given how niche it is.

Actually now that I think about it, is a PDF manual planned or is the game considered simple enough that really isn't necessary?

Just finished chapter 1.

I know I'm a terrible coward with regard to this kind of entertainment, but it's not like I wanted to sleep tonight D:.

Wonderful game, hoping that it's going to be up for the EU PSN people too soon. Much love for bringing this to Western gamers, even if its only as DL only.

Pretty much the latter. Sorry. :) We tried to include all the information people MIGHT need on the website, though. But most likely, people won't really need any info at all. I mean, this game couldn't be TOO much more straight-forward. :)

aaaaaand done.

unless there is some x-mas miracle and Trials Evolution comes out this month, this is my downloadable game of the year hands down

only complaints are technical: not being able to skip read text, and how slow the the saves load once you fill all the slots up (7mb!)

any sequel release will be bought DAY ONE

So started Chapter 5

Purposely let Kizami catch Yuka figuring I'd net a Wrong End... An hour and a half later finally occurs... YOU ARE CRUEL GAME

Edit:
Just finished it. Such a good game, so grateful XSEED brought this over, excellent translation.

The end left me with a feeling I expected... Relieved, but still rather depressed. Those who died being wiped from everyone else's memories.. =(... Also, Seiko was my favourite character, so even Ch.1 left me pretty depressed when I initially finished that.

Money well spent.

Oh, and of all the characters
I feel so bad for Mayu... Poor girl died in such a horrible way, and this went far beyond her "final day to spend with her friends"
.

I swore off commenting on sales data. 'Tis generally a can of worms that's best left sealed. ;)

Always good to spread the word, though, regardless of how well or how poorly it might be selling. Feel free to spam websites 'til you can't spam no more! The more the word be spread, the butter. ;)

Grr Chapter 5 sure makes you hope the game had a text skip option. Seems every wrong end takes forever to happen and you just wonder what did you do wrong this time :d.

Got the wrong end where Yuka gets captured and the one where the ritual day starts over again. I'll take a look at those Naho notes.

BTW, how to get the chapter 4 alternate ending?
