Covid is exploding in China

I guess theres complete info blackout from the CCP. But anecdotal info from everyone I know in China shows complete chaos. People are scared and cant even get their hands on tests.

- their own vaccines are weak so even if 90% of population are vaccinated (or so they claimed) meant that they are still vulnerable to the weaker strains of the virus that were more transmissible.
- this sudden reversal on not following their dynamic zero policy meant those who were confined to quarantine camps were suddenly released back to the public en mass, and this included those who were tested positive. This further helping the spread.

Considering the huge population size in China, especially in urban areas, this will obvious overload their health services.

I thought they opened up again recently after a bunch of protests across the country. Is this new wave the result of that?
Maybe but I haven't heard that. Last I heard was that they're really locking down things.

If it's true the protests made them lenient on the lockdowns, that's pretty good news. Now the majority of people just need to protest their government in general there....

Anti government stuff was even starting to spread on wechat, despite it being heavily censored. They probably figured they couldn’t keep up the lockdowns forever and it was making them look bad.

All the lockdowns did was delay the inevitable, but with that said, you’d figure they would prepare enough medicine in the meantime. Nope

Everyone is indoors now, too. It might've been better to do a staggered loosening of restrictions around spring. Might not have had a choice by this point.

It's unclear from an article I'm reading but it looks like the central government is prohibiting shutting down any work/production that isn't high-risk. Not only loosening restrictions, but stopping restrictions from happening regionally.

This government is the one that puts Muslims in concentration camps. I think looking bad is already a thing with them.

It’s complicated with their culture of “saving face.” Look it up to get a better idea. The lockdowns and low covid infections were a point of pride and success to them, so to throw it out the window is a hard slap

Well they can stay welded in their homes or go outside and get covid every month like the rest of us. I hardly even notice it anymore.

should've loosened restrictions in the summer before flu season to start building immunity. now hospitals are gonna be overwhelmed by flu/covid patients & probably make it easier for covid to spread to already compromised flu patients that are trying to recover

Hmm… I’m about to go to Hong Kong in a few weeks and one of my workmates there told me they are currently lifting restrictions every week and that with a bit of luck everything might be lifted when I go there mid-January.

Last time, COVID was small.
This time it's going to be strong. Hope we have enough vaccine to counter it.

I hate viruses like flu, which can adapt at a faster pace.
2 Covid 2 Furious is coming to your homes next spring.

Covid/Omicron has already swept through HK, killed a lot of people, but most of the populace has immunity by this point I think.

The Chinese peoples have really been put through the ringer these last several years. One can only hope life will soon become more bearable for them as time goes on. Right now they're suffering on several fronts, and they have many obstacles to overcome.

The poor Chinese people who have cheered on their repressive authoritarian regime for years, because it lined their pockets, with zero regard for anybody else, or the planet they live on?

Those poor Chinese people?

In the UK we let COVID rip through the population eventually and pretty much everyone's had it gradually over 2 years. COVID barely seen it in the news this winter and there are more people in hospital with Flu related issues than COVID. Also seems like lockdowns fucked peoples immunity up further (especially children) and worsened the affects of other viruses, like Flu, Strep etc...

China have royally messed this up, excessive lockdowns, even worse vaccines than the ones here and no natural immunity means hardly anyone has had it. Good thing for them though is that new covid strains basically a cold virus for most, so they should just shield / vaccine up the highest risk group and leave the rest alone to carry on with their lives.

Yeah, I know what you’re saying, but the years of Chinese people crowing about how great their government is compared to the western ones makes my sympathy gland shrivel up more than a bit.

Because that's what they get told and when they look around at how their generational family lifestyle has speedrun to match a western one in 30 years why would they think anything different?

The most egregious are the #Chinanumbaone generation that suffered no hardships, that's the zoomers.

I believe the real reason why China locked down so much was not to celebrate their world leading love of authoritarian control of the population, but because their healthcare system isn't up to it. Particularly, they are unable to produce and distribute enough of their own domestic vaccine to make a difference, never mind importing globally. Everyone knows that China is also a world leader in production of fake goods worldwide, but sometimes you need the real thing, and fake Covid tests can only keep up the illusion of being on top of things for so long.

I think he is saying that it is very tiring to talk about anything political with Chinese people because they have been brought up to be hyper turbo aggressive in reaction to any slight against China and Chinese culture. Walking on eggshells doesn't describe it.
Okay, but this is a COVID thread. If he and others just want to complain about Chinese folks maybe they can start a hate thread.

Very cool.

People who tell you they had Covid last week are the worst. Like, are we still doing this? I just had a raging diarrhea the day before yesterday but you don't hear me going on and on about it.
