Yeah, Faye was supposed to be a feme fatale and Spike a tall skinny quiet dude, the casting is not amazing at all for live action style they went for.

Can't quite tell if this is too much cheese or the right amount. Appreciate Mustafa Shakir getting the right amount of bite/bark in his voice for Jet in that teaser - does justice to Beau.
Looks better than the Ghost in the Shell live action... but that is a very low bar. Open to seeing how it goes!

Yeah this is sooooo bad. The interview with the actor was all about trans rights and how important inclusivity isLike listen I have nothing against trans people but Gren wasn’t a trans character, he had tits from side effects of a drug he took for PTSD. Lol he’s a beloved character, fans of the OG don’t want this, and this type of fake woke pandering should be offensive to trans people, imo.
Gren was living as a woman and could just as easily of chosen to dress and act like a male. Call it what you want, I guess, it was a tragic story any way you look at it. Not some chipper silver lining thing.

He used the disguise to get close to Viscous but he was still Gren or as Faye called him mr saxophone to everyone else. You could argue what gender he felt he was but we only get him for two episodes and don’t know much, but they are doing with the live action and what they did on the show appear to be two very different things.
That’s a whole other agenda getting pushed in their for inclusivity points from some of their potential viewers. It’s fine tho, I’m just just gonna roll with whatever we get and hope for the best. Maybe they’ll be a really good Gren who knows
To be fair I think I’m going to have to really put aside any of the non faithfulness concerns tho. It looks like they are doing a lot of episodes from the original from the villains weve seen already, but I’m sure they will do some originals and change a whole bunch of stuff. I’m looking forward to whatever they do, disingenuous forced woke stuff and all, and just hope they make something solid, that doesn’t get dragged out too long

Yeah, my memory was a little hazy. Died as a woman but was seen as male before. Overall, wasn't in the show that long, doesn't seem to care much any more. But the ending was the thing that sticks in the mind, as it was symbolic of an internal conflict, due to Gren's idea of the comradeship of men, or band of brothers, being the thing he clung to.

Story and characters aside I love Cowboy Bepop for world building and scifi elements. Too bad almost none of that in the trailer.

I like this little teaser but the characters and over all feel of it still seems off. Faye of course is the worst offender. I can see what they are doing with the characters and I do like the bits of sci-fi they mixed in to these scenes to make them more fantastical(?)
I'm getting the feeling that I would have liked this show more if it didn't have the name cowboy bebop attached to it since I do like the style and the corniness, unfortunately I'm stuck comparing it to the anime over and over again every time I see more of it.

This has that really shit look and feel you get from those cheap Bollywood films with terrible special effects but it's not anything to do with effects.
It's hard to describe it's like something about the way it's shot or the cameras they use.

Damn, as much as i bitched when they first showed the actors, i kinda liked this trailer.
It's original and unburdened by conventions.
The actors still don't look like their anime counterparts but they seem to have a good alchemy between them.
Jett is great, Spike and Faye are okay, Vicious looks like Marc Dacascos cousin tho... But we should not see him too much anyway
The martian saxophonist is a total misinterpretation of the original material but what can you do nowdays?...
Pierrot le Fou looks cool, his episode has a lot of potential.

They even managed to squeeze the ballad of fallen angels in there!

You can tell he realized the whole thing was shit and just decided to have fun with it going completely over the top.

and also, to be fair it is certainly up for debate whether or not Gren was bisexual and/or questioning his gender, but it’s not really a big focus in the original show, they never explicitly state he’s gender neutral or questioning or trans, and I always kind of liked that. He was this enigma of a person who shined really bright for only two short episodes.
But once again, anyone expecting this to be super faithful to the original will hate it by default, so I’m personally not going into it expecting faithfulness.
Im sure a lot of things are going to be reimagined, and if I have any chance at enjoying it, I’m goin to have to just accept whatever they do. Maybe what they do will be a great Gren, but it won’t be the same Gren. Definitely a big reimagining lol but I’m willing to give them a chance instead of just poo pooing on it

I think your take is a bit lenient to them. They are saying « the vocabulary did not exist at the time ». It’s like they are saying « we are reimagining the character as he should have been in the first place… » the character was never non binary and having both gender characteristics (which are the result of meds he took after going to war as someone already said) was painful for him. It’s not because he didn’t knew how to name his condition or feelings.
I remember in the anime he kind of flirted with spike who responded really strongly against it (I might be mistaken tho). I guess in the adaptation Spike is getting the D since anything less would be viewed as transphobic

Gren said something in the original show along the lines of: "I am both male and female, yet neither, at the same time." Which has trans, non-binary, and inter-sex connotations. Like that tweet said though, we lacked the vocabulary back then to define what Gren was. But at the same time, like the actor said, it allowed for people who had identity issues, to relate to that character, regardless of which of those three identities a person gravitated towards, because it was ambiguous.
I was discussing this with my partner as well, and she made a really good point. Anyone who had identity issues back then that watched the show, could relate to Gren in some way, whether they leaned more trans, non-binary, or inter-sex. But now, they're definitively labeling the character as non-binary. Which means that they're invalidating any sort of connection a trans or inter-sex person might have felt towards that character. Netflix was attempting to be more inclusive by having a non-binary character, and then they end up invalidating the feelings of trans and inter-sex people that may have related to Gren, by saying that "nope, actually Gren was non-binary."

I think that’s what you’re saying. I don’t understand all the gender lingo. I don’t think there’s anything to be offended by here either. Not everything piece of media/art needs to include every gender/race/whatever.
With them sayin they are “reimagining” the character Gren, it bacially means all bets are off, they get to decide what Gren is and isnt, which is fine, whether that includes or excludes people is irrelevant tbqh bc that is their “reimagining”, it’s whatever they want it to be.
That doesn’t mean people can’t be upset about it or have an opinion, but I’m not of the idea that everything needs to be inclusive, so that part doesn’t bother me.
All that bothers me is people who haven’t seen the original, and only see the live action, won’t get to experience the same Gren that myself and many of us did, and how disingenuous the reimagining of Gren’s character feels (it feels like fake woke pandering and if I was lgb+ I might be offended by the bad faith corporate acting going on here —> “how do ya do fellow gays?”)
Hopefully whatever they do works and feels right. The show will never live up to the OG so, as I’ve said, I’m just going to try and enjoy whatever they do, and not think too hard about it.l (if I haven’t already lol)

Oh yeah, definitely it was better when it was ambiguous. Sorry if that didn't come across too well in my other post. I agree with your other points, not everything needs to be inclusive to every race/gender/identity. Personally, I never really saw Gren as an LGBTQIA+ icon either, but that's how they're defining the character for the adaptation.
I was more just examining the irony of them making the character non-binary, in an attempt to be more inclusive. The actor playing Gren is non-binary in real life, which is great for the actor, because Netflix have labeled Gren as a non-binary character, and that actor said they looked up to Gren and their experience.
The irony is that, for any other people in the world that may have identified with Gren the same way that actor did, that may not have identified as non-binary, but rather identified as inter-sex (somebody who could identify as both) or trans, it's like that South Park episode, where Mormonism was the right religion, and all the others were wrong. Keeping it ambiguous would've been better, so that people of any identity could still look up to the character, the way that some people did in the original. But now, it's just the non-binary experience, which given the story of Gren, does definitely feel disingenuous.

I liked it. I am not so certain about the shooting in the face part. Seemed like something you would not joke about.
Still, they are bounty hunters and mistakes like that would happen.

The thing with someone like Takashi Miike is that he understand that simply looking or doing the same as the source material will not usually cut it, the adaptations that are able to stand by their own are usually those not really worried about the fans but instead have a unique interpretation of the source material and the balls to do it without worrying about pissing some fans...in someways, i think it's even harder if the source material it's famous instead of some cult shit.
Takashi Miike prints movies like it was the newspaper, but the ones that have stood the pass of times are not usually his more cosplayer looking live action but instead the more wild ones.

Congrats Netflix, You made a live-action short that was completely built around this "manga panel" effect, in what I presume is a tribute to the source material.
But they didn't do their homework, else they would have discovered Cowboy Bebop was never based on a Manga, it was a straight-up anime series to sell action figures.
