Crap, my CRT just died...time for an upgrade! Help!

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
36" Sony XBR800 purchased 2002 - RIP 2008.

So what should I look at for my 360/PS3 experiences. What's a solid LCD 1080p TV that is recommendable? I haven't paid much attention for awhile...

Actually what's the status of LCD?(ghosting, etc...) Should I be looking at other tech? Help me GAF! I want to continue playing Vesperia!!

You're pretty much fvcked. Mitsubishi's laser tech looks kind of interesting if they can get the sets down to reasonable sizes. SED seems pretty much stillborn. FED even more so. Not counting on OLED either. LCD does it all pretty much backwards, but plasma is servicable I guess. Not worth it's space, weight or cost though.

space? a 50" plasma takes up only slighly more space than a 50" lcd.

weight? ok, il give you that, but seriously, are you going to be carrying it daily?

and cost? hm. he had a CRT HDTV. if he cares about his IQ even slightly, an LCD will be rubbish. even the low end panny plasmas have much better IQ/blacks than a high end LCD. imo, the cost is more than worth it.

Unfortunately, the only way is down from a good CRT. Flat panel technology has a long way to go. :(

why spend too much on an overpriced Pioneer Plasma when you can get This Panasonic which has almost the same quality for much much less?
It's nowhere near the same quality, you're kidding yourself if you think that.

I'm not upset. Whatever would lead you to that conclusion?

YAAAAAH!!!

Crap...my Sony CRT was stunning too... :(

LCD really that bad though? I see pics in the 2008 Home theater thread and so many LCD's look so gorgeous with games on display!

Oh em gee, the black level is too high, the viewing angle is too small, etc. etc.

IRL, games running native 1080p will look great (somewhat....still a lot more issues with lcds than plasmas, ghosting, horrible blacks, amongst others) but when you play anything that needs to be scaled...oh god.

plasma is definitely king if your after IQ. like dragona said, if money isnt an issue, and you want the BEST television available, get the LX 50/60. if money is an issue, get the panny. it still pretty much destroys any LCD out today in terms of IQ.

you forgot to mention how fucking HORRIBLE the scalers are in lcds. let me guess, lcd elitist? all those problems you mentioned ARE problems. the main issue with plasmas was image retention. which now is pretty much a non issue.

What about Sony? What's good in their camp these days?

if you go the lcd route, the bravia X series is the best. (for sony that is. i still rate samsung to have better lcds. more of a personal preference)

kuro shits on anything non pro.

120hz bravia and touch of color smasungs have pretty damn good blacks for lcds.

a new gen panny plasma has good pq too.

the man is going from a CRT hdtv to another tech. a CRT. dont crucify him to LCD. if he was going from RP tech, then fine. LCD would be an upgrade. but dont torture the poor guy into an LCD

I tell you right now buddy.. going from a CRT to a LCD ..you may not like. Even though that sony CRT was 6 years old or so..it still had better picture quality then any LCD out there *at a reasonable price*...if i were you, i'd go with a plasma, honestly, closest your gonna get to that CRT superb picture quailty

I have a Pioneer KURO Plasma which i just paid 3 grand for 3 months ago and my 36XS Sony HD CRT.. this CRT has a Super Fine Pitch Tube.. and boy does it still beat my pro calibrated pioneer plasma in terms of picture quality.. although my plasma is nothing to sneeze at. Point is.. i wouldnt get with a LCD man..at first i bought a Sony XBR LCD for 2500..i had to take it back after a week..i just couldnt adapt to the PQ of a LCD on a big screen..its just not there yet if your picky about top notch PQ

Are you in my MSN's, stealing my comments? :lol Was just saying the exact thing to a buddy. Love my ISF calibrated kuro, but even my old XBR960 still beats it in a few area's, that said when you're talking a 50" screen, imo nothing comes close to the kuro.

Turn off the lights and a CRT goes from great to OMFGSOGOOD.
Turn off the lights with an LCD and I think, "Why the fuck are the blacks white?".

I'm looking for a 34/36 inch CRT HDTV right now myself. Weight be damned.

If you can find one.. look for a Sony XBR or XS with a super fine pitch tube man.. i telling you man..these super fine pitch tubes are incredible bro. They are the same tubes broadcast stations use for editing their broadcasts, etc

They also have the highest horizontal resolution of all CRT Tubes.. these are the best CRT HDTV's ever made, period

EDIT: little info on what to look for in a super fine pitch sony crt http://www.highdefforum.com/showthread.php?t=20871

i have never really researched projectors, is it even worth getting a projector thats under 10k if your looking for something equal to the pq of a kuro.

Not unless you want to only use it in dark settings. Plasma's have a history of not looking the best in well lit area's, however the Kuro is an exception imo.

Yeah I feel like killing myself a year aftering getting my 32 inch aquos. Not a bad tv by any means but I want CRT. I actually was in best buy a month or so before I bought my Aquos and saw a CRT 34 inch XRB. Not sure what the exact model was but it was marketed as a steal if I remember.

The only problem is tracking these fuckers down. Craiglist seems like the best option for me right now.

How am I kidding myself? Of the same size plasmas I have in my house, I actually prefer the Panasonic Viera in my bedroom over the Pioneer Elite in my living room. I'm sorry if you got all butthurt over me downplaying your favored company, but its the truth that the two brands of plasma TVs are very comparable in quality. It just depends on whether or not you want to bend over for Pioneer.

Plasma.

Panasonic if you're broke. Pioneer if you're rolling in it.

THIS.

LCD's just don't come close to a Panasonic Plasma, let alone a Pioneer one. (Speaking as a Proud owner of a Panasonic 42" TH42PX70 Plasma)

todays tv technology is pure shit. no matter what you buy you're going to be throwing away your money for something that looks worse.

in terms of picture quality here's the downsides of both lcd/plasma

plasma
-dithering
-color banding
-somewhat grey whites
-yellow/blue fringing and flashing on moving objects
-picture blurs onces the picture moves fairly fast
-dead pixels

lcd
-color banding
-uneven screen lighting (flashlights/clouding/etc)
-lighter blacks
-blur even with slight motion
-ghosting
-bleeding/trailing blacks
-poor viewing angles
-hard to see details in darker scenes
-dead pixels

it basically comes down to which technologies flaws you can deal with best but in the end you lose.

I wanna cry now...

I'm leaning towards the Pioneer/Panny plasma since most of you are less hateful of them, but yeesh.

Yep! Got that in the bedroom and have my 34XS955 in the living room. Not really anything to upgrade to without jacking into the matrix.

Honestly the closest thing you'll get to a CRT look is either a Panasonic or Pioneer plasma. The "downsides" are very minimal now, though you might have a bit of an adjusting period, since you had such a great set beforehand.

Canon just won their appeal against Nano-Propriety over SED, so it's not completely dead. I'm still rooting for it.

Is plasma still super-sensitive to screen burn? Not a great choice for an avid gamer, if that's still the case.

rod said:
no. its not.

agreed but as plasmas get brighter and produce better blacks the phosphor trails get worse. that's really the main thing someone looking at plasma should be worried about... do the trails bother you or not.
