Criterion Collection DVDs--which ones have you got?

Sure, they're overpriced compared to major studio special editions, and the brilliant remasters they do are more common these days than they were in the early years of DVD. But I've never made a bad Criterion purchase, and it's still my favorite line of DVDs. Every single disc has amazing box art, and their extras always kick ass: not as many as these spawling four-disc studio sets, but it's a matter of quality over quantity. (I've yet to watch more than a half hour of the extras for the LOTR special editions, but for some reason I can sit down and watch all the extras for a Criterion disc like Brazil or Spartacus in one weekend marathon.)

Anyway, this box set is on its way to me (which is out of print, so act now while you still can):

along with:

B00005V8TD.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I've also got (too lazy to link images):

Beauty and the Beast
The Royal Tenenbaums
Brazil
Spartacus
Tanner '88
The Beastie Boys Anthology
The Hidden Fortress
The Seven Samurai
The Seventh Seal
Cries and Whispers
The Last Temptation of Christ

George Washington
High and Low
Rashamon
Redbeard
8 1/2
Juliet of the Spirits
L'Aventurra
Carnival of Souls
Passion of Joan of Arc
Orpheus Trilogy
Cries and Whispers
Solaris

There's plenty more that I need. I want to create a serious Kurosawa collection. I have yet to pick the Brakkhage set that came out a couple of years ago. I also know where I can get the out of print Tati discs at regular retail price (hopefully they're still there).

8 1/2

I haven't bought a Criterion since Tenenbaums I think. There's a whole bunch that I want, but with little-to-no income, it gets kinda hard.

Love the Criterion Collection. I think this is all the ones I have, although I might be missing a few of the laserdiscs, as it's probably been at least a few years since I've even played one...

I had no idea this existed. If it has the old English dub with the line "We're going to the Olympics!" then I'm supremely envious.

Plus it seems like they're cranking them out now, by comparison with their production rate a couple of years ago. I think they're up to spine number 266 or something like that by now (the most recent one I got, Tanner '88, is #238).

edit: they also aren't overpriced when you consider they do all of the restoration/extras themselves and have small print runs for a lot of thier films.

Alphaville
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
Rushmore
Last Temptation of Christ

Man Bites Dog
Down By Law
Band of Outsiders
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Honeymoon Killers

A Woman is a Woman
Videodrome
Hitchcock Collection

Next on my list is the Cassavetes box set and I'd really like to pick up Crash on laserdisc. :(

I got Seven Samurai and The Beastie Boys Anthology. The Seven Samurai dvd is quite awful and feel lame for spending so much money on it. The video feels like its from a cheap bootleg

Dan

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Chasing Amy
The Hidden Fortress
Ikiru
The Royal Tenenbaums
Rushmore
The Seven Samurai

I think that's it for now. I'm slowly buying more of Kurosawa's films, and there's a bunch of others I want to pick up, like The Lord of the Flies, The Most Dangerous Game, Brazil, Le Cercle Rouge, Solaris, etc.

Brazil
Beastie Boys Anthology
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
The Royal Tenenbaums
I have a ton of them on my DVD wish list, including Battle Of Algiers, which I hope to get for Christmas.

I haven't picked up a Criterion disc in a long, long time.

Seven Samurai
Hidden Fortress
Yojimbo
Samurai I -- Musashi Miyamoto
Samurai II -- Duel at Ichijoji Temple
Rashomon
Solaris
Chasing Amy
In the Mood for Love
Spellbound
Charade
Rushmore

It's the one that says:

Is that you again, Tetsuo?
What...that Peaaaaaabrain!

It's not the same as the DVD dub.

Has some kickass weapon/costume/vehicle sketches on the 3rd LD as well.

It does - I have the LD as well - when I watched the redub of Akira, i was mad they took that line out actually :p

Cosmic Bus

pristine morning snow
I sort of regret selling my copy of Hiroshima Mon Amour. At the time, I didn't think I'd ever go back to it, but I find myself wishing recently that I still had it to watch... Probably end up re-buying it sometime when I get around to ordering either the Dreyer or Cocteau box sets from DVD Planet.

And for the Kurosawa fans (of which I seen quite a few in here), you'll be happy to know that Criterion's finally releasing Kagemusha in January.

I just realized that I have a couple more:

M
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

I went to Criterion's site a couple of hours ago, and man do I wish I had the money to burn now. I definately want the Cassavettes set. In addition, I want to get a hold of 3 Women and Fanny and Alexander (when it's available).

M. Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle are back in print. Alas, Playtime - the one Tati film I really want to own - is still OOP, but hopefully it'll be returning before too long.

Here's my list:

Brazil
by Brakhage (which is so awesome it hurts)
The Complete Monteray Pop Festival
Diary of a Chambermaid
The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fishing With John (Demon, you've got excellent taste)
For All Mankind
General Idi Amin Dada
Gimmie Shelter
The Harder They Come
Hearts and Minds
The Hidden Fortress
The Royal Tennenbaums
The Ruling Class
The Seven Samurai
Solaris
Straw Dogs
That Obscure Object of Desire
Tokyo Olympiad (which I also own on laserdisc)
Videodrome
Yojimbo

Tokyo Olympiad has the distinction of having my favorite commentary track, even over other faves such as Gilliam's Brazil commentary. Alas, Kon Ichikawa is dead, but film historian and Olympics buff Peter Cowie does a bang up job in his place, offering a solid three hours of film and sports commentary.

155_box_348x490.jpg

This is one of the more overlooked Criterions, so allow me to take a moment to plug it to each and every one of you. It's one helluva film, and I adore the showdown between the Japanese and Soviet women's volleyball teams. Trivia note: footage from the finale of Tokyo Olympiad was used in the film Marathon Man.

There are plenty of Criterions I'd love to own, but right now The Battle of Algiers is at the top of my list. Meanwhile, I'm hoping they release more of Buñuel's flicks on DVD.

That's nice to here about the other discs. Playtime is a shame, though. It was the first film I saw in my first film studies class, so I have fond memories of it.

Chasing Amy

you guys are making me realize I have more than I thought.. :p

I just ordered the Hitchcock collection too. I got it for $200 canadain on Amazon.ca market place, brand new. Like that the thread-starter said, this one is out of print, get it while the price is reasonable. I also have Wong Ka Wai's "In the mood for love".
