i just made this pretty recently...i just started using ableton live and a new midi controller, so i'm still getting the hang of things. but anyway, tell me what you think.

jay z - 99 problems (iaas mix)

anyway i've been doing this for a little while now (i posted some a long time ago back when i was yoshifumi), but making the switch from fruityloops and acid pro to ableton live was pretty much like starting over.

not my flavor, so im not sure how to critique it. the drums are pretty busy and the sounds are pretty overwhelming. are you playing it w/ your midi controller?

99 problems is also a tough song to remix, believe me, i've tried :*( :lol

hows ableton treatin ya? i'm considering the move... but its doubtful right now.

edit: btw i was listenin to the remix w/ headphones on mono... dont ask. anyways it sounds much better in stereo, but still very busy.

well i originally played it with the midi controller, then adjusted stuff to fix timings and stuff

ableton's pretty convenient to use, it's the switch to using a midi controller vs. just programming everything that's kind of a hassle, considering the latency problems i have without a real sound card. ableton's beatmatching warp tool or whatever it is seems pretty useful, but i haven't quite gotten the hang of it.

I had similar issues in FL for a while, but I recently installed the Asio drivers and they worked like a charm. If you haven't tried em yet, check out Asio4all.com

The synth bass line has a mediocre sound, and is too loud and prominent. Then later you add various synth lines, but they're all in the same frequency range, it's a muddle, even though you only use a few sounds. I'd make the melodies more sparse, but add some tracks for effects or instruments in a different frequency range.

what do you suggest i do to the bass to improve it?

Pick a different bass sound. Maybe cleaner or a higher resolution. And don't pile melody upon melody, especially not with the same instrument. Instead, add bars with effects in them, or little melodies, using an instrument in a different frequency range so it doesn't compete with the bass line.

Your remix of M.I.A.'s "Uraqt" is still one of the best. That said, I don't really care for this one...

i'll tweak some stuff this weekend and probably post the results next week, provided they don't block gaf at work. i'm trying to make this my at work forum now.

sapiens, that's some real useful advice

hotarubi, thanks
(actually i don't really like that remix that much, but people always seem to say it's the best one i've done)
also if you still like the dale gribble experience stuff, i've been working on an album in which each song is about a different movie. i'll post it when it's done, hopefully people like it

While we're on the subject of remixes, here's one I did to a Robin Thicke song. Not a big fan of his, but I did like the beat and song, so I did a lil somen to it.

btw, your stuff sounds good, it just needs more fleshing out imo... you need some VST plugins on those sounds so they won't sound so fruityloopish. But as far as the timing goes, you got that down to a TEE, which is a big deal. Just work on your plugins... You'll notice a huge change. Also the high hats remind me of some old school Cash Money. Which is a good thing imo. But wow that beat is crazy man... I like it so far.
