Crowbcat - Dead Rising DR: Demake till you drop

I enjoyed DRDR for what it was as I loved the original so much, but it is wild to see what was altered in terms of details. It's really disheartening seeing such limitations in newer games. Be it sequels or remakes, it just makes no sense to me. We have better hardware now, so, why on earth would we have less details than we did in the original? It makes absolutely no sense. Definitely makes you question the RE Engine a bit more. I mean, sure, in a lot of cases it can look real good, but maybe it can't do as much as we thought it could. Or at least as well.

The AI upscaling part is honestly something that I found really disappointing as well. You can't act like you care about your game and everything, but then just be okay with doing such a thing. I mean, some of the examples that were shown were completely broken textures. It looks lazy and careless.

I couldn't careless about the censorship stuff, it's everything else that honestly bums me out.

This video is insane, I had no idea the game was such a botched job.

Not just the censorship but the super poor lack of details, AI upscaling textures, it's ridiculous.

When it switches to the fucking WiiU footage that has better mirror effects than this remake, lol.

Soulless indeed.

Was going to get it eventually but, after seeing those differences side to side...yeah, it's a no from me dawg.

I can live with the..."political correctness" but those botched details like less gore, not being able to shoot zombies in the distance , no mirror reflections, AI upscaled shit job, dumbed down enemy AI and difficulty etc etc...scream of a rush job and definitely something that I won't reward by buying a copy - and they want 50 Eurodollars for this ?

This is why we can't have nice things.

I don’t get how we got from mirror effects on a Wii to no mirror effects on a PS5. Boggles my mind.

This is a common issue with all kinds of remasters and the like. The original product is made with a AAA team with visionary talent and passion with huge budget and years of time, while these remake projects are often given to a small, low level team of novices, interns etc. with low budget, few months of time and no proper director to handle the big picture of the vision. These guys not only lack the artistic talent the original team had but also don't care or understand the original art or what made it special and think things get better by just adding more superficial detail.

A good example of this 'not understanding the original vision' is changing the origial DR's amazing liminal space feeling with a generic zombie horror mood. The point is that the mall is a normal place with clean hallways and well kept gardens. Zombies just happened to invade the place, so what's with the overgrown leisure park in the remake for example?

Original DR is one of my absolute favorite games and I'm so glad I dodged the bullet with this turd of a demake.

ART IS DEAD

VISION IS DEAD

PASSION IS DEAD
I played the Dead Space (2023) not long ago and I have to say that it is a major improvement over the original without cutting corners. So, while this remaster is a hatchet job, it does not mean all modern ones are.

It's crazy that we have people defending a remaster made 18 years later that is buggier, broken, less detailed and censored as if this should be at all acceptable.

They likely had more developers working on this this than the original, had the base code to work with, and still somehow created less and charged nearly full price for it.

The AI upscaling sure is something.

I caved in and bought the game but... goddamn that's so glaring

I mean, the shadows of the damned hella remaster has apparently heavy dips into the 30s on a PS5 of all things and that's as basic as remasters go (it's basically an up-res job)...

I don't know what's worse to be completely honest, although, I'm still grabbing SOTD (when they'll patch it) while DRre is still a no go since it's pretty much unfixable - not to mention - by choice.

People hate the term "lazy devs" but Goddamn if that isn't the case with most late remasters.

Absolutely. That's what I said: "a common issue". The Dead Space remake for example was perfect! A 10/10 update of a timeless classic.

tone of the video seems a bit too apocalyptic

it is a shame about the difficulty and the gameplay effecting stuff, like more passive zombies and the inability to make barricades and at the same time how certain element of the environment are now unbreakable barriers for the zombies...the rest is stuff that it's not THAT important, although it's a shame that we didn't get the same attention to detail 18 years or so later

also did not find that much differrence in the voice acting part

Definitely sad with all the censorships happening for no reason, but the gore/blood ones are definitely because of less talented devs or stricht deadlines, because would make no sense to tone down blood just a little bit, but leave all the rest. But one thing always surprise me of modern games is the lack of reflections in mirrors/clean surfaces. Seems that now you can just have reflections if you have RTX ON, but like shown in the video even Wii games had more than decent reflections. I mean, in Alan Wake 2 on PS5 is basically impossible to see a mirror reflect something, but I can see everything reflected in Duke Nukem 3D. I don't know what happened, but definitely we are going back on some aspects, same for interaction/physiscs, at least in AAA games.
well most of the times in old titles reflections are not actual reflection, they are duplicated models.

I’ll say 9/10. There were some unnecessary changes made. Nicole’s model and the gender neutral bathrooms come to mind immediately. Kendra’s voice acting bothered me too. Original was better. No reason to do that but they did it, likely because of EA.

I hope that they do Dead Space 2 and don’t botch it at all.

Pretty sure the laser sights in the remake don't function independently like the original.

They ruined Hammond's character and some of the environmental storytelling was also inferior.

You are right. It's a 9/10. I forgot those little things and they also botched the "loud room" ambiance.

pandering to the rainbow crew ruins yet another game.
the mojority of the issues pointed out in the video have nothing to do with it.
it just doesn't seem to have been done with enough time and care, the surface is there, but it misses the attention to detail and how unapologetic the original game was

This is very sad to watch. I was going to buy this but glad I've held off.

What a shame, game looks amazing but man games get worse remaster that's movies ever have.

Such a shame for our hobby.

Because the devs don’t care, the publishers don’t care, the reviewers don’t care, and the gamers don’t care. Gamers will eat it up and buy whatever slop gets out in front of them. For example, you bought this.

It actually is that important. Blood and gore in a zombie game, come on. And all the details show the love and care the original devs put into the game, which made it more immersive, which were definitely noticed as we played, and the new game just looks like sloppy shit like everything else. And not just that but the AI up scaled textures are GTA definitive tier but nobody seems to give a shit, least of all the devs.

You can’t expect these studios to have any sort of standards if we don’t.

Right, and I'm sure you've made similar purchases as well, a lot have. It's just unfortunate that it's all gone in this direction in so many ways. Feels less passionate and more about cashing in. It has for years.

Still disappointed he never made that Starfield video.

Some stuff are very much lazy work, like the low resolution stuff, the change in some artifacts... the game has a scene that Frank looks at a map and says something that makes sense because of it, and now it doesn't have this map and he is looking just at a wall and say the stuff, so what the fuck?! Sometimes are just bullshit, like the change in direction/censorship - they changed into a easier game and a whole character motivation, for fuck sake...

But sometimes Crowbcat pushes some dumb stuff, like he says that the blood was censored and I believe that was more of a engine thing, since the blood still happens, just not like the original. Could be even as a lazy artistic thing, but censorship?! With REmake 4 video he also put another weird point which I don't recall right now, but something similar

Yeah, that's something that started bothering me in his later videos. I understand pointing out things like lacking details, bugs, and other things. But some of the stuff genuinely feels like they could've been artistic changes, or something along the lines.
