I just finished watching His and Her Circumstances.

Fuck you, Gainax!

3.2 seconds after the last episode ended, I came to the conclusion that Gainax SUCKS.

This is the second time they do this to me. THE SECOND TIME. :(

What is it with those fuckers? Do they enjoy this? Do they share this sadistic nature and fulfill their sick desires with anime? That last episode, looked like it’s episode 40 in a 50 episode anime series. It did NOT look like a last episode. We have no fucking idea what will happen with tonami and sakura… No idea on the culture festival… no idea on what arima will do and develop now that he realizes he can’t go on without yukino while she herself doesn’t need him and can continue on without him. That’s the kind of development that happens in the middle of the series and ENDS AT THE LAST EPISODE. It’s not supposed to be INTRODUCED at the freakin’ last episode.

And don’t tell me that this anime should be appreciated “like a painting” or whatever. They made it very clear those developments needed more time and that the characters were changing. Just like they changed in the beginning—they showed pretty clearly that the story will and should have a continuation and then cut it short.

Evangelion I can get. It was “all about the characters.” Other anime shows were also “all about the characters’ and they had the dignity to finish their stories as well, but ok Eva is “special.” It’s about philosophy and “not just mecha.” Any jackass mumbling about how worthless he is for an entire episode is a breakthrough in anime because it’s “deep.” I can see myself re-watching Eva some time later and enjoying it though. His and His Circumstances is 100% about the characters and yet we don’t know how the fuck are they going to deal with the current challenge.

And it’s not just the story. What’s with Gainax and constant annoying flashes of text and images that induce epileptic seizures even for the blind? Do they think it’s cool and innovative? Does Anno sit back in his office and wonder how awesome he is unlike those other anime directors who don’t’ use such creative way of torturing the viewer? The manga panels were kind of cool and I understand they were under budget so too much of the panels was also justified but for gods’ sake the opening for 26 almost killed me.

Oh and it’s not just seizure-inducing flashes and manga panels… Is it me or is there some jackass in the background spouting words like “hope” and another women repeating right after him “hope”? And we here words like: future, love, confusion, anxiety, etc… all repeated by those two morons. Is that supposed to tap into the depth of my soul and somehow make me declare Gainax and Anno the gods of anime?

I tolerated a freakin’ recap almost every 3 episodes by having a main character sit in a corner and wonder how he fits in society for HOUR AND HOURS. Yes His and Her Circumstances had great development but Anno took it way, way over the top. I heard he was on crack or had a breakdown when making Eva; let’s put that rumor to rest: that dude is always on crack.

Anywayt thank God for the manga. I’ve some question about it—I appreciate any help.

1) When will the last volume be out? Is it over in Japan?

2) Where should I start from the manga—which volume? I don’t want to start exactly after the anime, just a little bit before.

Thanks for any help. Man I watched several shows that had their manga continue but I’ve NEVER felt like I should read them this much.

Lastly I just want to say that overall, despite all of that, this anime is pretty good. Better then Ok. I’d say a solid A anime without the last episode but a B overall. :)

I’m gonna go play Ikaruga now.

Best anime ever. And in the case of Kare Kano, the manga wasnt (and still isnt) finished and they couldnt come to a resolution with Masami Tsuda on an "ending" to the show, so they just animated until where it was out in the comics at the time. Can't really blame them for that although their going overbudget (as GAINAX always does) did result in some of the wacky recap episodes).

Kare Kano was directed by teh same guy who did eva.. so that explains why the ending is how it is.

The manga goes well past the anime. The anime ended at volume 8. U can start there. I think theyre up to 11 in the states. The manga is still going in Japan I believe.

See other replies to your GAINAX/Anno hatred. If they made it end, they'd totally be pulling it out of their butt, which would be far more disastrous than leaving it open like they did. But because the mangaka (author) and GAINAX had a falling out, a 2nd season of the anime is highly unlikely.

That being said, I enjoyed the last episode quite a bit. I thought it ended properly. There is no period where a relationship has a conclusion. There will always be ups and downs. Unresolved personal issues. Pending relational tension.

In other anime, particularly shounen romance (romance comics for boys), the anime ends when the couple gets together. As if that's realistically a good ending point. Most problems start when a couple get together. Shounen romance is generally about the chase, which is why I was never a big fan of it. Shoujo romance (romance comics for girls), on the other hand, is a lot more relational. For example, in Marmalade Boy, Miki and Yuu get together somewhat early, just like KareKano. But even with shoujo anime, although the relationship between the couple is usually stronger at the end due to challenges, the closure is only skin deep as well.

So I think that KareKano reflects an accurate portrayal in its unresolved anime ending.

I'd consider KareKano to be one of the best anime ever... but only if episode 18 never existed -_-

I saw the ending and wasn't exactly happy with Gainax either. They ended the second season of Mahoromatic really weird too (but not to the extent of Kare Kano). Either way, I'll be buying the manga in due time...

I found the first DVD to be a great viewing experience, but from there it really just pays to buy all eleven manga volumes (so far). Tsuda's story feels like its only just begun, and it's a fair bit past the end of the anime now.

Tokyopop has been doing a great job with the manga releases, and the anime-manga differences are basically negligible. The only problem is that Kare Kano is not a terribly fast moving series in japan either, so manga releases will probably slow down to 2-3 a year soon.

Sure wish they'd release Ebichu on DVD in region 1 with English subs.

Ebichu is so risque I'm rather hoping that Animenation might tackle it, after they release the entirety of another great comedy series: Guu.

I always crack up when I hear canonbert cheese mentioned after watching Ebichu. Disturbing and funny.

Dead

well not really...yet
Gainax and Anno rock. Gunbuster, Nadia, Eva and Wings of Honneamise, FLCL = neverending love for them. Theyre not the same now, but godamn the new Cutie Honey rox (anno!) and Melody of Oblivion isnt bad either

(mahoromatic and that other new shit not withstanding)

Gainax seems to turn out nothing but trast, if you are over the age of 16 then nothing they make is any good. Wings of mayonase was boring shit, Evangelion is poorly conceived trash. The only 2 things loosely associated with gainax that are worth mentioning are Abenobashi and FLCL.

Ha, I just watched all of H+H not even a month ago and was also annoyed. #12 of the manga should be out soon, and I think there's 17 in all. But if you buy from like... #9 on, you see the play happen, stuff with Sakura, stuff with Tsubasa, etc

There really needs to be a followup season/seasons of H+H
