Damned EA!

I'm surprised nobody else discussed the interview with the gal in charge of Koei in last month's OPM. The one where they mentioned they (Koei) were interested in doing a Lord of the Rings game, but those incompetent boobs at EA got it instead - and hoodwinked the gaming media and masses but good with a big fat license on a heaping pile of not fun game play.

That burned me but good, as when I saw the first LotR movie when Sauron starts cleaving suckers in half and mowing down armies singlehanded, Dynasty Warriors 2 was the first thing that came to mind.

Well there's still hope as they mentioned Koei was interested in making a DW style game based off of The Ring of Nibelung (Sorry, quick Google turned up that as the first non music translation text), or other European lore. I know Drinky Crow was clamoring for an Arthurian beat'em up.

I hope this happens, and I hope it's not as poorly executed as Samurai Warriors. Say no to level capping!

This is sort of fixed in the add-on... but you have to amass 1,000,000 total points (based upon how many things you accomplish, unlock, etc...) but by that time, you probably would have cleared everything... (obviously, I 'm nowhere near 1 mil)

EDIT: the folks at Omega Force may be able to learn a little bit from the God of War team, the combo systems are very fluid and the grapples are awesome

Samurai Warriors is hot! The level cap doesn't bother me at all!

But yeah fuck EA a Dynasty Warriors engine LOR game would be so hot.

Well, the ROTK multi-platform beat-em-up game wasn't bad at all. In fact, it was GREAT. And it certainly did better than all those Dynasty Warriors games if you're talking about review scores. And at least EA did not hit us with LOTR: ROTK Xtreme Godly Heroes Edition.

I primarily used Dian Wei, and I'd futz around with some of the other characters. The nice part of no immediate level capping in DW was that it added to the replay incentive. I could play the game over and over as I tended to do, and still build up my character.

With Samurai Warriors, there was a pretty clear end in sight and combine that with some of the niggling aspects of the game (fawful castles), it ended up getting traded in.

But now that we're talking about it - the level building of characters in Dynasty Warriors and the co-op play are executed very Sega-like.

Koei needs to allow players to use their own character profiles when playing the game. I recall one time Manky and I tried playing co-op at his place, and he was using a beefed up character and I picked a bare bones Dian Wei and thus proceeded to do my best impersonation of the albatross in Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Read: I got my ass kicked, leading to many abbreviated sessions before we just decided it was a total wash.

Now if I could have imported my Dian Wei save. . . Hey, what do you know.

Hopefully Koei will address that.

I just need to get over my fear of playing Dynasty Warriors. It's all consuming. I can, and will, play it non-stop for hours. DAMN YOU KOEI AND YOUR DIGITAL CRACK!

yeah - that would be really nice. maybe they get some other fantasy book license or will create a new western themed fantasy universe.

Yeah a kind of 13th century English/France inspired Knights/Archers and men at arms game would be nice next gen. Maybe they could focus it on castle sieges I would love defending and laying siege to massive castles. Plus plenty of strategy to boot it would mean they wouldn’t depend on the one dynasty warriors franchise but have several different franchises with slightly different flavors.

It would be totally politcally incorrect, but I'd love to see a Dynasty Warriors style game set during the First Crusade. You could eat roast children on a spit to regain your health. :X And in typical Koei historical amalgamation fashion, you could unlock Baybars to then go and cleanse the lands of the Christian knuckleheads.

Arthurian Legend would be a good choice - just so you could have a Dolorous Blow meter and joke endings involving Sir Kay sitting in the Siege Perilous.

There's also the splitting of skulls and other cool stuff to enjoy along the way. :)

Damn, that sucks.

Is there a chance EA can work something out with Koei to co-publish a LoTR game developed by Omega Force...?

DOn't give them any ideas.

I'm currently addicted to DW4:Empires.... I'm suppose to be playing other games right now... but... just can't...pull....away...

Nah my friends dont game :P

Well the good thing about DW/SW is non gamers can pick it up and enjoy it in an instant, one of my friends might be content with 75 kills while I hack a bloody path with 350+ kills. We both will have a great time as he defends a gate and is challenged while I ride around doing all kinds extra missions.

Now if I was to play a game like Halo or Halo 2 Co-op with a non gamer friend I would have no fun, we would have to play an easy difficulty I would dominate or have to deliberately not play properly to keep the game challenging for my friend.

DW/SW = The best Co-Op games on the Xbox (Metal Slug 3 might take the cake).

I must be the only person who thinks the DW games suck balls...:P
You are absolutely not. I always thought they are boring, ugly games, and I'm very happy Koei didn't get the license to LOTR, as I enjoyed EA's two games way more than any of DW games (and they also happen to be way better looking than any DW game).

You're dead to me sir, dead! :(

You guys know another game that pooped on EA's LotR games? Berserk for the DC. It had some glaring flaws (The sections where you could just run past the enemies and make it to the next stage), but at least it was fun to play.

It's a shame Yukes screwed the pooch with Eve of Extinction.

DW games look like crap compared to LOTR:TT and ROTK :P

I'm sure if DW limited the battlefield and opponents in the manner EA's titles did, they would look that much prettier. ;)

That's just one of the norms of gaming these days. You can have a game with a free roaming camera with slightly less pretty graphics, or you can tether the camera some place and get better visuals.

I much prefer the chaos of the DW style games.

Not to mention in the first LotR game, the sensation of hitting enemies was terribly lacking. When I'm mashing buttons on my controller in a brawler, I have to have the psychological (is that right?) stimulation / sensation that makes it feel like I'm cleaving through enemies. Too often in LotR my axe or sword felt more like a fly swatter hitting a dish towel, instead of 50lbs. of metal cleaving through armor and flesh.

When I bite into a York Peppermint patty, I get the sensation of chopping down hundreds of Chinamen in Hu Lao Gate. :P

That's where most DW clones seem to fail, getting that visceral feel down. Drakengard and KUF: Crusaders certainly fell short in this as well.

The LoTR console games shouldn't even be compared to Dynasty Warriors. They are both hack and slash but that is where the similariities end. The size of the maps in Dynasty Warriors dwarves the LoTR movie games.

Kessen III gives you a scope of large scale action the EA LoTR console games dream about:

Heh, I disagree even with that. Hacking and slashing in ROTK felt better than in DW4 to me. Btw, free moving camera can not be an excuse for how DW games look like.

Agreed. Berserk was one of my favorite DC games. Very underrated hack'n'slash if you ask me.

I've always been under the impression that fixed camera angles afford developers more horsepower to focus on stuff like better character models and evironments, etc.

As for the DW games, there have been substantial visual improvements to the series since DW2. Although they're probably not the sort of improvements to change the minds of those to whom the appeal of the series is lost.

Could Dynasty Warriors be prettier?

Yes.

That's what the Playstation 3 is for. :P

Dynasty Warriors 5 on the PS2 is a disappointment for me, because I was really hoping Koei would go all out and make it a PS3 title.

Oh well.

EA's Two Towers and Return of the King could have been so much better. There was enough source material in the movies, but instead of using that, they made up their own stupid scenarios that were contrived at best. Didn't anyone else want to play as the Rohirim in Return of the King when they showed up to help Gondor? It would have been awesome in a game, and should have been part of the game. EA is just simply not good enough to make a game that the Lord of the Rings could inspire.

Heh, well we might be waiting awhile for Dynasty Warriors 6 on PS3 so enjoy Dynasty Warriors 5 for now! :P

I noticed Koei has alternated releases since Dynasty Warriors 4

Dynasty Warriors 4 one year

Samurai Warriors next year

Dynasty Warriors 5 the year after

Next year is the PS3 release with Oni. So perhaps Koei may start putting all three series in a rotational cycle where you get one every three years.

I thought ROTK was great. Not like DW, but compelling and plenty "meaty" feeling in the combat. Tough too. One of the better games EA has made in the last few years, imo. LOTR: TT has the problem your talking about and is a lesser game. They brought their lesser talents to Demon Stone which is shit.

DW: Empires is so addictive. Shallow, stupidly predictable, and so addictive.

If you like Berserk, try Shadow of Rome. There are some similarities though it's not as constant in it's hard hitting action. When it's there, it's really really there though.

The nice thing about the DW games is how much easier it is to hop right in. I like Kingdom Under Fire better in many ways (it's combat isn't lacking a visceral punch, just variety), but it makes you think more and for this type of game that's not always a good thing.

DW4 Empires is sickeningly addictive, yes. Probably the best game for Dynasty Warriors fanboys, since it lets you get right down to the beatings and lootings.

I'm steering clear of Shadows of Rome, and pretty much any Capbombs, namely because of the stealth levels.

I have no tolerance for stealth levels.

I just received the God of War demo, and that's a pretty meaty button pounder. The situational combat is reminiscent of Sword of Berserk, only without some of the obvious weaknesses in the game design - at least from what I could tell from the demo.

Although it's not quite the orgasmic gaming experience the actual demo thread would have you believe.

I'm not saying it's bad, just saying that the GAFots are doing a fine job of being Jaffe's mouth piece. A lot of the impressions of GoW are in line with the "EPIC" rhetoric of that behind the scenes trailer.

I am interested in playing the demo with the commentary track on. That's one of my favorite aspects of DVD's, and it could be sweet on a game. Assuming I don't get tired of hearing the same dialogue over and over as I die. :P

God of War is just another bloody action game. Well done, but damn it - Incognito needs to get to work on War of the Monsters 2! >:|

Buzzwords aside, the demo alone was some of the most explosive, visceral action experience I've played in a game in a long, long time.

Um - okay.

That's the sort of commentary I can't get my brain around.

I guess if I only played three games a year, that kind of statement might make sense.

Oh well - to each his own.

I might pick up GoW once it lands on Greatest Hits.

The box kicking aspect of the demo kind of grated against my nerves, and I have issues with games that make use of fixed cameras. The camera in GoW was good in the demo, but I completely do not trust a fixed camera to not betray me at some point during the game. :X

Yes, but in the game's defense it's not the rubbish Capcom stye fixed camera. The levels seem to be designed so that there is nothing to really obstruct your view of your character, which is the main complaint I have against fixed cameras. At no point could I not see Kratos, that's something that I can't say for Dante in DMC.

Definitely check out the demo before you write it off. It might just be enough to interest you in a $20 purchase once the price of the game drops.
