I hate having to sit in these smelly trains filled with people that annoy me. Like yesterday, these two most annoying women were sitting behind me laughing in that most annoying laughter that most women have, it gave me a headache. Then you've got the loud drunk people who just came from a sports game. Damnit people, noise is the last thing I need after a long day staring at the computer screen trying to import stuff from buggy MAYA 6.5 into tempermental Unreal.

MUNI lines hella smell. Real crowded in the morning too. BART is pretty cool.
Well, one time some dude kept walking around holding the rail above his head. Ever make homemade tacos with those Taco Bell seasoning packs? He smelled kinda like that, but left out in the sun for a week. Even though you couldn't see him you'd know he was coming cause the car would fill with his stench.
I saw the look on everyones faces the first time he passed through. One guy had no idea what just happened to him. :lol

I guess it all depends on where you live. Here in Cleveland public transport is pretty shit because our city's founding fathers prevented the installation of a proper subway system. They didn't want their friends in Downtown Cleveland to lose business to the outlying suburbs. WHOOPS! Cleveland rocks!
Now Downtown Cleveland is a ghost town and you've got to catch two buses to get 14 miles out to the suburbs where all the jobs are and the rich folks need a servant class. :X
My main pet peeve with Cleveland bussing is that buses run an hour apart after 6PM and on Weekends. >:|

Do respectable cities like New York or Chicago have similar bullshit public transport policies which negatively effect your quality of life?

Not sure where you're going to and from each day but CalTrain rocked when I was working up in SF. It was great to just relax on the train every day rather than having to worry about driving. You could nap, read, play games, listen to music, watch TV.... I sorta miss that in the commute to work. It was great cuz the PSP just came out so I used it extensively. Made my way through 8 seasons of Stargate SG1 that way.

Well, that's Caltrain, and I think my stuff is happening more lately because I'm taking BART at non-peak hours of the day. When you're around business people things aren't as annoying. Of course, I have to take things in the night because my damn teachers don't teach during the day (because they work in their actual industry jobs).

I too have heard nothing but good things about NYC public transportation from my brother who recently moved to the city and is now thoroughly enjoying himself. He said the commutes to and from work are the best he's ever had (he used to take public transportation in Chicago) and everything is so conviniently close.
Not the case for me, I gotta be on the BART train for 40 minutes at least.

Oh well. judging from things, it doesn't appear that a lot of videogame developers are smack-dab in the middle of an urban center. Even here around the bay area, most devs reside outside the city in the southern peninsula (Redwood shores, aka EA land) or up north (LucasArts).
And most devs in other states aren't in urban centers either, like up in Washington, most devs are located in the suburbs of Seattle.

But yeah, outside of cities is generally the rule (with some obvious exceptions) It's probably a combination of saving money on rental prices, lower salaries to cover lower cost-of-living expenses for employees, and just generally more space to expand if they're successful.
