While chatting with the Telegraph the SNL alum revealed the sad, but expected news that the great Bill Murray would not be participating in Ghostbusters 3. Yes, it is something we all knew in the deep recesses of our hearts, but it's never fun having the nail go through the coffin, killing our fleeting hopes.

When the actor was asked if he ever thought the film would be made he had a fairly sober response.

"At this point it's in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie."

And if it were to be made, many would have a hard time watching a Ghostbusters film without the main attraction, Bill Murray. On that front Aykroyd was even less enthusiastic and puts an end to that speculation forever.

"He doesn't want to be involved. He's got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He's into this life and living it. I know we'd have a lot of fun [but] I can't be mad at him. He's a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn't want to know."

Another rumor that Aykroyd addresses in the interview is if he will recast Murray's role as Peter Venkman, or as the interviewer suggests, use a CGI version of Bill as a spirit.

"We're not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise. The script has to be perfect. I'm the cheerleader, but I'm only one voice in the matter. It's a surety that Bill Murray will not do the movie, however there is still interest from the studio."

Well that is not the news that I wanted to hear, but let's look on the positive side, we'll at least have Rick Moranis to look forward ... perhaps.

:(

I really can't blame him. Murray was deeply disappointed with how Ghostbusters 2 turned out. The man shouldn't be burned at the stake for passing on a project that he doesn't believe in.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed in 2 as well. I am just sad there will definitely be no awesomeness. At least if the movie was going ahead it might have been great.

Studio probably wants to make some shitty kiddy fest, that they can exploit to sell lunch boxes and other garbage.

That's amazing news. There is a 0% chance that the Hollywood of today is capable of making a Ghostbusters movie that isn't complete and utter dogshit. If Murray holding out keeps this disaster to be from happening then good on him.

Yeah, I don't blame him. I really doubt a GB3 will do anything other than tarnish the franchise. I doubt anyone in Hollywood has what it takes it make a GB3 that retains the comedy and charm of the first two. Just let it be.

We'll always have this.

Good for Bill.

Some people think he's an asshole for refusing to do this, but I think he's doing the right thing.

Hollywood needs to reassess its position. What's with all the 80s remakes? Are they actually running out of ideas or are they afraid to risk their funding on unproven ideas? I'm not gonna lie: if I saw an epic trailer for Ghostbusters 3, I'd be very excited, BUT it would probably be just that, an epic trailer. Hollywood has mastered the art of making exciting trailers for bad movies.

If you want to see Bill Murray in a good film, watch "Moonrise Kingdom" in May.

Hopefully he's feeling guilty over getting Lorenzo Music fired from the cartoon (for sounding like Garfield, which Lorenzo Music was for TV, as well as Carlton the Doorman on the old Bob Newhart show).

And then actually doing the voice of Garfield in the movies...but I'm sure it's just because he's an asshole.

He doesn't give a flying fuck about Garfield. He can show up, shit the bed, collect his millions and move on. He actually cares about Ghostbusters and doesn't want to see it shit on.

Aykroyd seems to be giving another angle, though I don't fault him for that either.

Shame though, I'd like to see what the original guys would have put out there.

It probably was going to piss off a lot of people anyway.

"Why'd they focus on the new guys so much?"

"Why is new guy X in it more than new guy Y? Why would they do that!?"

I don't even think they should bother rebooting the franchise. How much cache does the actual brand has, when you lose all the stars? Ghostbusters was basically a perfect storm of talent, writing, timing, etc.

Good for everyone, Bill Murray.

Now they can do a reboot starring --

Jesse Eisenberg
Michael Cera
Jonah Hill
Taylor Lautner

edit:

and Aziz Ansari as Ernie Hudson.

This whole thing is very similar to Indy 4. It was talked about for years and there was so much "waiting for the perfect story" and all of that. Then when it finally came out, most people hated it.

Part of the charm of Ghostbusters was the 80s vibe and strong nostalgia that people have for it. There is no way Sony could replicate that to similar results today. Hell, they couldn't even do it with the sequel.

I love Bill Murray but did you guys play the Ghostbusters game? His voice-over showed he really isn't interested, heh. Can't imagine the new Ghostbusters will turn out too great anyway.

Honestly if they make a new GB movie and cut stuff like smoking and swearing, as well as the gross looks, it's better they don't make it.

Let's be honest. a new Ghostbusters movie made today would probably suck. It's probably for the better.

Bill Murray is making the smart move here.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
I love Aykroyd, but honestly in a way I'm glad there won't be a Ghostbusters 3. The recent Ghostbusters video game was essentially GB III and it did it very well with Aykroyd and Murray's involvement. Loved that game. Had the voices but kept the team close to the age they were at in GB II.

What I'd love to see is another Ghostbusters video game with all of them participating again. I think the games would be a lot better than a new movie anyhow seeing how they've all aged.

I really can't blame him. Murray was deeply disappointed with how Ghostbusters 2 turned out. The man shouldn't be burned at the stake for passing on a project that he doesn't believe in.
And yet he appears in trash like Zombieland. Go figure.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
It's best that they just never make this.

If they absolutely had to do something with the franchise, I think they should do a whole new reboot. Whole new cast, modern times, totally fresh story, and do a version of the concept that isn't riddled with nods to the original. But the various powers involved would never go that route.

What?

Zombieland was a mediocre at best and his cameo was the only particularly fun part of it.
Fixed.

it wasn't the greatest, but there were still some good lines and the game is pretty good if you have a pc/surround sound. Worth it on the cheap for sure if you are a fan of the movies.

Wow, both horrible options just let it die. If everyone isn't on board, it shouldn't be done.
