While chatting with the Telegraph the SNL alum revealed the sad, but expected news that the great Bill Murray would not be participating in Ghostbusters 3. Yes, it is something we all knew in the deep recesses of our hearts, but it's never fun having the nail go through the coffin, killing our fleeting hopes.
When the actor was asked if he ever thought the film would be made he had a fairly sober response.
"At this point it's in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie."
And if it were to be made, many would have a hard time watching a Ghostbusters film without the main attraction, Bill Murray. On that front Aykroyd was even less enthusiastic and puts an end to that speculation forever.
"He doesn't want to be involved. He's got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He's into this life and living it. I know we'd have a lot of fun [but] I can't be mad at him. He's a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn't want to know."
Another rumor that Aykroyd addresses in the interview is if he will recast Murray's role as Peter Venkman, or as the interviewer suggests, use a CGI version of Bill as a spirit.
"We're not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise. The script has to be perfect. I'm the cheerleader, but I'm only one voice in the matter. It's a surety that Bill Murray will not do the movie, however there is still interest from the studio."
Well that is not the news that I wanted to hear, but let's look on the positive side, we'll at least have Rick Moranis to look forward ... perhaps.
