BERN, Switzerland (CP) - Atlanta Thrashers star Dany Heatley suffered a serious eye injury after being hit by a shot during a Swiss League hockey game this weekend.
Heatley, playing for SC Bern, was hit in the eye by a shot from teammate Daniel Briere in the second period of a game Saturday night against Geneva-Servette. Heatley and Briere are both playing for Bern during the NHL lockout.
Heatley, a native of Calgary, was taken immediately to hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe swelling and inner bleeding. He had no sight in the injured eye when admitted, the Bern club said. Doctors drained the eye to relieve pressure in it.
On Sunday, there was no indication whether Heatley had suffered nerve damage in the eye, but Heatley's agent Stacey McAlpine told TSN that the retina is still intact, so at this time there doesn't appear to be any concern over the loss of the eye or vision in the eye. It was not immediately known, either, which eye had been injured.
All players in the Swiss league are required to wear visors.
McAlpine also told TSN that Heatley suffered a fractured orbital bone below the eye and will require surgery. The club said Heatley will remain in hospital for at least a week and could resume playing in six weeks.
"Because of the operation, Heatley will have to stay in hospital for at least a week,'' the statement said.
Club doctor Martin Schaer said he was confident Heatley would regain full vision in the eye.
Heatley, who joined the Swiss club last month, scored Bern's lone goal in its 2-1 loss to Geneva-Servette. In 10 games with the Swiss club, Heatley has seven goals and eight assists and is tied for second on the team in scoring, four points behind Briere.
Heatley still faces six charges, including vehicular homicide, in connection with the 2003 crash that resulted in the death of friend and teammate Dan Snyder.
Heatley has a court date slated for Nov. 29 in Atlanta but may not have to be there in person. Heatley faces a maximum of 20 years in jail and fines totalling $5,000 US if convicted on all six counts.
The move to SC Bern reunited Heatley with Briere, a centre with the Buffalo Sabres. Both players played on the same line at the 2003 and 2004 world championship events, leading Canada to gold in both tournaments.
Damn, scary. Dany is just cursed! That could have really been a devastating career ending injury, especially for me as a big Heatley fan since I still have Dany pencilled in as a perfect leftie to play on Iggy's line in 2 years.
