It's been rumored for a long time, and now the Henson company is doing it:

The Jim Henson Company is planning to make a sequel to its 1982 fantasy classic The Dark Crystal, reports Variety.

Titled The Power of the Dark Crystal, the new movie is written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which starts shooting this fall for a 2007 release. It will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation.

The story is set many years after the original, which was helmed by Frank Oz and Jim Henson. Original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

The company is also developing an animated series, interactive games and other media as well.

God help me. I may have to pull a Gungrave if they fuck this movie up.

The Dark Crystal is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time, and I would gladly lug around Henson's casket on my back and - KICK THEIR ASSES! should it be required of me. >:|

And my pencil. . . it has no problem with spilling blood.

I hope it's good. I also hope it recaptures that early-mid 80s strangeness that felt so right with movies back then.

Don't worry, Frank Oz is apparently involved and Brian Henson is as well. Their original idea was to do it 100% with puppets and no CG, but apparently the story is so big they need to use CG for some stuff.

HOWEVER, Henson's CG is about the same as puppets anyways since they still act out everything with a puppet interface, only it uses a digital puppet.

Originally it was going to be directed by Henson and Oz, but they are now saying no one is attached to it.

Have they released the original movie score on CD?

I've only heard tracks from the vinyl version on a local radio station from time to time. I'd love to obtain a copy.

Brian Froud's involvement is also critical.

TRIAL BY STONE!

talk about unexpected...I didn't even know they were considering a sequal.

now all we need is a sequal to Labyrinth. as long as they keep the weird puppets that ripped each otheres heads off out, it should rock.

They wanted to do it before Farscape, but that took up a lot of their resources that would otherwise have been used on Dark Crystal 2. Now that Farscape is done they can start filming this fall.

Its written by the same person as the original, and honestly the only difference will be that Jim Henson isn't around to direct it.

What an insane trailer! I have to see this movie. Did it (and Labyrinth) ever come out on DVD?

A couple times, I believe. I really like the packaging on the special edition set.

The CG makes me a bit nervous, but I trust 'em. The making of the Dark Crystal might have been more enjoyable than the movie itself. Such an amazing process. I'm looking forward to this.

Just ordered the Collectors Editions of both Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. Fuck me, but they aren't cheap.

They're worth it though.

Personally, I like Labyrinth a little more.

Labyrinth I loved as a kid. Dark Crystal rings no bells in my head. Though... that main character is creepily familiar.

The score to the Dark Crystal is amazing (much better than the score to Labyrinth IMO), and the scene when the hero enters the old woman's room with the big model of the solar system still looks awesome to this day (I have the DVD, but hell if I can't remember any of the character names).

Dark Crystal
Labyrinth
Return to Oz
Neverending Story

The upper-echelon of 80's flicks that would never get made today because they aren't "cute" enough but could seriously fuck some kids up in the head :)

I don't remember a whole lot of details about The Dark Crystal... but I remember really, really loving it when I was a kid. It's one of those things I've avoided watching recently, so I don't have to put what I once thought awesome up to the critical eye of Josh at 20+. To find it less than awesome would crush a little part of me.

A followup happening might force me into rewatching the old one, though.

I'm afraid not even David Bowie and busty young Jennifer Connely awesomeness could offset some of the more obnoxious characters and themes in Labyrinth.

Dark Crystal was suitably - dark. I can watch it today without cringing, but Labyrinth - Hogwart, Ludo, and that stupid dog on the dog thing. Sir Diddymus?

I'll have to score that Dark Crystal CD set when I free up some loot. Thanks for the heads up.

Part of the modern-day charm of Labyrinth is its campiness though. Of course, that's easier said by someone who grew up with it and isn't seeing it for the first time.

"Dance, Magic, Dance" is a classic though. :D

I'm not saying that to take anything away from Labyrinth. I did enjoy it growing up. I just can't watch it today. I like the Bowie tunes, it's some of the characters and base morality play that kills me.

Bowie in Labyrinth = Ayame Kojima's wet dream, and the grandpappy of every modern Castlevania hero. :p

Rumor has it that Bowie split the red sea on set. +1000 Bowie if true

I'd rather they leave well enough alone with The Dark Crystal and launch another original concept executed with Henson Creature Shop puppets.
