Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Durante, if you don't mind me asking, is programming your profession, or is it just a hobby?
I'm a PhD student employed at a university working on compiler optimizations for massively parallel systems.
Graphics programming has been my hobby for 13 years.

Oh wow, that's really something if you've taken on responsibilities like that within a hobby. I really hope FROM at least acknowledges you to did this. No one asked you to do this, but you did. And again, a hobbyist, no less.

Much, much respect.

FWIW I'd love to work for From, it may not sound like it but I have a huge amount of respect for what they do -- when it's not porting stuff to PC at least :P

From is an amazing game developer. It's what made the port so disheartening!

But I've said it a million times, Demon's & Dark Souls are by far my favorite games to come out of the consoles this gen, and two of my top games ever in any capacity.

Tactical & tactile combat system, deep RPG mechanics, strong multiplayer component, ominous, dangerous atmosphere that most survival horror titles only wish they could evoke, complete lack of hand-holding, memorable art - they basically have it all. I'm jealous of those who will go into these games for the first time.

Truly premier action RPGs, and in many respects a perfect fit on the PC.

As for all the GFWL questions:
We don't know yet. Check back in 4 hours!
if by some magic you get a job with them I expect you to constantly bug them about a new ChromeHounds or bring the original to PC, with your help ofcourse :)

So what I don't understand is how can Durante fix this in less than 30 minutes, but a game developing company cannot at least give proper internal resolution, you'd figure the guys who makes games for a living would at least be able to know how to do that, even if their knowledge of PC ports is limited.

That being said, $5 Steam Sale waiting.

Yes, it should even be possible to integrate them before the HUD rendering. But that's quite a lot of work so a bit further out.

And it would only make sense if I manage to fix the inherent blur first!

So i guess that D3doverrider is also incompatible.

Do you think it is possible to add, besides to the fxaa support, a native triple buffering flag to your dll?

Erm, you can't do it like that. You'll be giving a supersampled look when resizing to 1024x720, which already improves it, and when scaling back artefacts will be handled by the whatever software you used to resize the image, which usually do a better job then just normal gpu scaling.

I'm kinda looking forward to how they'll handle this. Will they implement it with proper credit to Durante or will they dismiss it because someone did something they didn't know/want to do in 30 minutes.
If they choose to implement this and other fixes that may come I might reconsider and buy it.

Also, the difference in those pics are astounding. Great job Durante!

I have a hard time handling feedback here, at my blog and by email, and it's not even released yet. I shudder to think what happens when I upload it and it won't work for the majority of people (pretty likely with untested software).

Durante, are you interested in making the fix open source?
Yes, once it's presentable.

The current code base is terrible.

Just try to gather feedback in one place so it's easier to check. I assume you'd want some traffic to your blog, but in all honesty, keeping it in the GAF thread would probably be the best solution.

It's called the Magical Power of Giving A Fuck.

The only sad part is that people are now buying this shitty port and are just letting developers get away with it. "The community will fix it". Sigh...

To be fair, this wouldn't be a 30 minute job for From. Sure, adding resolution options would, but they'd probably have to test the entire game at different resolutions. Namco is probably to blame for not giving From the time and resources they need.
