Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Except it isn't really outselling CS:GO. It's just ranked higher as, from what I remember top sellers works based on how much money it was making, rather than each digital copy sold.

So a game priced $15 would need a greater amount of buyers to be ranked higher, versus one priced at $39.99 or higher.

Sales aren't as good as you think. The game is essentially a bust on PC.

On another note, concerning the amount sold. While yes 8,500 is peak and it shouldn't represent the amount of players played today it still isn't that great.

I guess From will not be bringing anymore products to PC. Oh well, at least this will show them and others either bring something that wasn't half-assed or don't bring anything at all.

Can you... Stop? You're jumping to unsupported conclusions, being melodramatic, and generally trying to rile people up. That behavior is usually associated with what most people call trolling.

There are also retail copies that are not on Steam.

And yeah, this too. NONE of the retail copies are factored into anything listed on Steam.

The game has been out for a few hours. Are you on something?

Keep this in mind, people: It's got more people playing than Darksiders 2 on PC, which is a Steam-exclusive title. One could safely assume it's outselling that game, which is pretty crazy for a horrible late port. Good thing PC gamers appreciate a quality game. I was really hesistant about buying this port though, but since the Fix seems to be working I just snagged it off GMG with that voucher code.

It sounds like you want this to fail, you must really hate From Software.

Oh god, the mod is night and day.

As soon as Durante fixes the messages, I'll use it.

Game is pretty awesome. Couldn't be happier with everything (unless the game came fixed from the developer itself, that is..).

dude, the number of concurrent players playing multiplied by 5-8 = the number of copies sold. I believe that was said by Red Orchestra dev. And that is on Steam only. And in the first day only.

So quit being a drama queen. They have already returned their non-existent budget on PC version.

Lol at thinking this port actually had a budget! It was probably done over the weekend by the work experience kid.

With any luck it proves the PC market is viable and more developers start taking the platform seriously.

Pretty much, and this game doesn't require steam. I imagine a lot of Europeans got boxed copies.

am i correct that if i turn the resolution in the fix to a higher resolution than my monitor is capable, i got downsampling?

yup, just change the res in the .ini file to something higher 2x your current res is a nice starting point, turn off the in game aa and you're downsampling

A few pics (I know, I know, pics from the beginning are getting old)...

3840x2160 internal resolution + 1.5 OGSSAA (2880x1620) at 1080p (30fps locked so far).

Again, Durante, thank you soooo much for this :)

Yeah, I gave it a shot and the game look smooooth~! Although now the frame rate is pretty crappy now... I need to see about upgrading the PC sometime.

sorry folks for the repeat question but the info is buried and can't find.....if I downloaded from steam where are the exe and ini files for Dark souls so that I can drop in the patch?

A quick comparison compared to one of my earlier shots in full resolution

( Obviously need to click & zoom for the full effect )

Vanilla

Durante's fix at 5120x3200

Will be minus that (x86) part if you're not running a 64 bit version of Windows.

Not a day has passed and you're already declaring it bombed just based on concurrent players figure.

Not everyone that buys a game plays it immediately. Remember people have to download 4 gbs worth of data, it's activated at a relatively late hour, a lot of people bought off GMG and haven't activated yet and then there's retail in Europe.

Also, we all knew Dark Souls was gonna be a slow burner, so hold your horses and maybe not go for the knee-jerk guesstimate.

My god you are negative, calling it a bust so soon.

Got a steady 30fps now with my card. Just had to like someone here mentioned to up everything in CCC.

Have now the following "LOL"

3840*2140p downsampled to 1080p

8xCSSAA + morfologisk filtering.

GPU 7970 amd
CPU intel k2500 4.2Ghz
Mem: 8Gb

With a Master Key, and odds are a newer player won't venture there for a while anyway.

Yeah I guess you're right that new players might not do, "lets see how many items I can collect by running around" etc. although I certainly did my first playthrough of Dark...admittedly I was a 500 hours demon's player though ;) But all that really did was inform me of FROM's style....they like placing useful items in different worlds/areas from where they are useful so that an order OTHER than the obvious one materializes and makes you feel sneaky and rewarded for your exploitative capabilities....if you don't do this you are missing most of the reason why FROM and the souls series are GOdlike to some. I can't think of anything worse than going throgh this game and having to face palm in the 2nd playthrough saying why didn't I get that item for when it was really useful! Most people only do one playthrough so I suggest searching out each and every corner of where you can go even if you can't beat the enemies there...in order to find the good items.

But for those that really want to escape the hand holding of most helpers......Dying is fun...especially when you get items in your inventory as a result....once they are there they are there ...burn around town and die in the process collecting all the different pieces! The item in question looks mighty fine to me and is placed where it is SPECIFICALLY because it is a useful item for a particular area that can be accessed earlier than "normal"..... and hence is also found in a later area that hand holders will recommend to those who appreciate their hand being held.......not having the master key only increases the time....there are multiple ways to "stumble across" this item early even without the key
cough kill cough havel cough.....go cough left
or just enter through the
Garden
a little later.

the item in question is not necessary, and there are many many other items strewn about that have less or more value for certain areas....but more than anything the souls series is boss owing to the variety of ways you can creatively play it and have a unique experience....make sure you at least try to have a semi unique experience...that is all.

I love the Master Key. I picked it on my first playthrough and went around exploring everywhere I could, going to places I wasn't "supposed" to go to yet, getting into neat fights with high-level foes earlier on, etc. I find that a very fun and exciting way to play, personally.

Thanks for the fix Durante! Amazing work.

I sent you a small donation - if it wasn't for this fix I wouldn't even be bothered playing Dark Souls.

Yep.

Fuck, that guy in the tower is hard, maybe I'll try a different direction first (that was genius though - it take so long to get down to him, that you really feel like persevering)

Oh those skeletons are challenging. Oh those are even worse. Shit a big one. Etc etc if you insist on continuing towards the catacombs,

It actually does a pretty good job of teaching you the correct route at the beginning by killing you lots :D

thanks so much...total noob at PCing but I think I am ready to try out my new rig on this game with the patch, I already went to the first bonfire after firelink to test it out un-patched and am ready for improvements over selecting 1080 on the slider without fullscreen (basically somethings were better than PS3 some things worse):

i7 3ksomething ivy
msi lightning gtx680
120 ssd
BenQ 1080P monitor - only the 2450 though not the 120 hz - still its the fast vetrsion 2 ms GTG.....

so what should I set the resolution to when I edit the file? Will double be enough withthis set-up? Id rather tripple if poeple think it will be ok with a 60 hz monitor...otherwise I think I'll just try double?

It seems like it causes a fair amount of people to just give up right away at the beginning because they don't see the other route. Seen a lot of people say they just assumed that was the only way to go and that those skeletons are just living up to the hype about the game being so hard

and now Eurogamer loves Gaf...

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-08-24-unofficial-dark-souls-pc-mod-fixes-rendering-resolution

such a fan.

NeoGAF user Durante has created "DSfix", an 80KB download that tells the game to enable higher resolutions.

The download includes a .dll file to place within the game's directory on your PC, and a text file in which you can alter the resolution at will.

Japanese developer From Software recently admitted having a "tough time" with the PC port, something it blamed on the studio's inexperience with the platform.

"In Japan there's not much of a PC market and we haven't really taken into consideration that audience before.

"We wanted to get the PC version out as soon as possible, it's more strictly a port from the console version. We haven't been able to step up into doing any specific optimisation for PC."

Dark Souls is not a Steamworks title. The majority of the copies out there are Non-Steam except for UK copies I think. So those don't get tracked by Steam.
Also Alan Wake, which was a Steamworks title, peaked at like 4000 and the devs said it was profitable.

The 3000x2000 or whatever downsampled to 1080p shots you guys are posting are looking AMAZING.

It's like a totally different game from a different generation.
I'm surprised by how nice some of the textures look, considering all the technical wizardry/smoke and mirrors they needed to get it playable on consoles and hide flaws.

Behold, the Noctua nh-d14, easily one of the best if not the best heatsink and fan assembly on the market:

Put that in you system and don't give a damn about the heat again! Well, that is, if you can fit it in your case....

What's the minimum size my tower needs to be for this beast to fit?

Was just about to post that, I'm actually in awe how nice some of the textures look after applying this fix and the fairly consistent look. I've seen good ports with ten times shittier textures. I expected extremely muddled low-res textures everywhere
