Introduction:
Darkstalkers Resurrection is a compilation release featuring Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darstalkers 3, known in Japan as Vampire Hunter and Vampire Savior respectively. The game features the various modes one would expect in a fighting game, along with online features & a gallery mode with art and videos for the characters. There are also trials which can be played to get accustomed to the games.

The main artists on the series were Bengus (who would also go under the penname CRMK) and Ikeno. Akiman and Kinu Nishimura also did artwork for the series as well.
This release features art by Stanley Lau, whose art was added into the actual games, however you can revert to the original in-game art via the options menu.

The game will be released on March 12 & 13th to Playstation Network and X-box Live in the West. The game will be sold for $15 on US PSN, 12 Pounds on EU PSN and 1200 MS Points.
In Japan, this compilation is getting a disc release for both the X-box 360 and PS3 at an equivalent of $40, and can be ordered via certain online retailers such as Play-Asia.com.
The JPN X-box 360 disc ver. is region locked, however you can change the language to English and still play with the Japanese names.

Gameplay:
Before going into detail on the basics of gameplay, keep in mind that tiers don't matter much in Darkstalkers 3; there are players who can destroy high tier characters using a Low tier character, find the character who style you like or fits, put in the effort and you'll reap the rewards.

On the surface, the gameplay for Darkstalkers seems simple enough.
The game introduced the concept of chain combos in 2D fighters, and has been a mainstay of the series in all its releases and revisions.
Many players should be familiar with how Chain combos work, but for those that don’t, here’s a quick rundown, mainly on how Chain combos work in Darkstalkers:
1- You can chain Light>Medium>Hard, OR Light>Hard, OR Medium>Hard
2- You can go Punch>Kick, but not the reverse, you can however…
3- …still go Light Kick>Medium Punch, etc.
4- CHAINS CANNOT BE CANCELED INTO SPECIALS OR SUPER MOVES. There ARE some exceptions or workarounds for certain characters however.

Here are 2 examples of a possible chain combo:
Standing Light Punch>Crouching Light Kick>Standing Medium Kick>Standing Hard Punch
Standing Light Punch>Standing Light Kick>Standing Medium Punch>Standing Medium Kick>Standing Hard Punch>Standing Hard Kick

Like in various Capcom fighters, tapping forward twice will have your character do a dash, however some character’s dash launches them off the ground and puts them in a jump state (like Sasquatch's). Dashes can be canceled into normals and special moves. Some characters’ dashes can act like hops, this is done by holding Back after inputting the dash.

At the cost of 1 meter/stock, you can be perform a powerful variation of a character’s special move.
For example, Morrigan’s Soul Fist is QCF+P, inputting it with 2 or 3 punch buttons as QCF+PP (for example) will consume a stock, but the move will be faster and do more damage.
Incidentally enough, this concept is commonly referred to as EX moves in most games, but in Darkstalkers, this is known as Enhanced Special moves or ES moves for short.
Each character does indeed have a super move, however in Darkstalkers they are known as EX moves; Extra Special moves.

For the sake of simplicity, EX moves will be referred to as Supers, whereas ES moves will be referred to as EX moves.
Do keep in mind that in Darkstalkers, supers do NOT have start-up nor screen-freezing animations like many other fighters.

Note that a character's EX move will have different properties than they regular counterpart. Supers in Revenge and 3 function differently than supers in most other games, in that various supers can’t be comb-ed into as opposed to EX moves.
Furthermore, the input for certain Supers are similar to the Raging Demon input method.

In Darkstalkers 3, characters with Raging Demon input Supers can combo into them off of chains, Talbain for example can buffer in the input command for his Moment Slice Super during a chain and it’ll combo:
Moment Slice is: LP, MP, >, LK, MK
Input LP, MP then quickly press >, LK then MK and the super’ll come out, comboing the MP into the super.
This way you'll be doing LP, MP, Moment Slice. Hsien-ko can make good use of this in comboing or setting up for her Tenraiha super.

For more in-depth info on canceling chains into command supers, refer to this page: http://wiki.mizuumi.net/w/Vampire_Savior/Cmd-Super

Each character has Pursuit attacks, which has them home in on a knocked down opponent and hit them.
In Revenge, Pursuits require strict timing for them to connect on a downed opponent, although in 3 they have a higher chance of hitting.
You can also perform a stronger Pursuit attack at the cost of 1 stock of meter as well.

DS3 also has Guard Cancel moves, which function similar to SFxT's guard cancels, but do not consume a stock of meter, unless you do an 'EX Guard Cancel' move.

For beginners, I strongly recommend watching these:

Once becoming more familiar with the game one should read this Darkstalkers 3 strategy wikia for further assistance in getting better at the game:

Revenge differs greatly from the first Darkstalkers game, even though it shares the same story, features the original 10 characters, and certain gameplay elements.
Amongst its major changes is that the player is can hold up to 9 stocks of meter & featured 4 additional playable characters: Hsien-ko, Donovan, Pyron and Huitzil.
Overall the game is much more polished than its predecessor, but the character select screen and art from the first game was changed.

i1pbwz3ZrHVZx.png

Gameplay-wise, the game feels much faster than Revenge, in addition the round system has changed in that each character has ‘lives’; in a best of 3 match, the player who loses all their lives will lose the match. You lose a ‘life’ for each round you lose.

Furthermore, at the end of each round, the winning player’s health is NOT fully restored and they continue the match with whatever health they had in the initial round. Players can also recover some health in their life bar; when taking damage a portion of the life bar will be colored white, this white portion is recover-able health.

The game introduced 4 new characters (3 of which are female): Jedah Dohma, Lilith, B. B. Hood & Q-Bee. Oh and you now can hold up to 99 stocks of meter.

The events of Darkstalkers 3 takes place (officially) more than a decade after the events of Revenge. Jedah awakens from a long slumber and is dissatisfied with the state of Makai. He creates the Majigen in order to unite all souls, or rather the strongest souls, into one being.

Notes:
1- Originally Huitzil, Pyron and even Anita were intended to be playable, as their in-match character portraits can be found in the game’s data.
2- Some months after Vampire Savior was released in Japan, Capcom released Vampire Savior 2 and Hunter 2 to arcades.
3- Savior 2 replaced Talbain, Sasquatch and Rikuo with Donovan, Huitzil and Pyron, but the gameplay was the same with a few alterations.
4- Hunter 2 removes the 4 characters introduced in 3, thus retaining the Revenge cast, but with similar gameplay to Savior.
5- In the PS2 Compilation release, Donovan’s vampire form is made playable in Vampire Savior, VS2 and VH2. Known as Dee, he’s Donovan’s head on Demitri’s body. Dee is not playable in this compilation release

Lord Raptor’s Japanese name is a jab at Ozzy Osbourne.
Huitzil’s name comes from Aztec mythology.

Hmm I'm editting the OT a little to stop it from stretching so much, although it's I think its mainly caused by the '#1' at the top right.
When I previewed it the post didn't stretch beyond the horizontal blue border at the top...

It's already been confirmed that Dee and Marionette don't appear in this version at all, sadly. (I know Dee is hella janky, but I still like the idea of his design. His artwork is pretty cool too. It's just the lazy way they implemented it that messes things up.)

I'm only semi-excited for this, mostly just to show support for the series. I'm still pretty bummed that this won't be the definitive version of D3. The "arcade perfect" scenario for D3 they are boasting is already void due to playable Oboro Bishamon, so I'm not sure why the other arrange characters had to be left out. (They could of included options to toggle them off for purists. That way everyone would of been happy.)

Hmm I don't see how Oboro Bishamon would affect anything, just ban him and viola its like nothing was changed.

We don't know if that's an option yet. (Unless you are referring to a self implemented ban.)

And if you can do that, why can't the same be done for the other 5 arrange characters?

Oh, that's great.
Much respect to Artgerm's work but i've never fallen in love with his style.

Which ones, is 3 getting extra characters or such =O?
I'm talking about Donovan, Huitzil, Pyron, Marionette and Dee.

All five of these character (along with Oboro Bishamon) are playable in the console ports of D3 (Dee only in the PS2 compilation), but not in this version. If Capcom is gonna include one arrange character, why not all of them? Just put in option in to toggle them off so people that only want to play against the original arcade cast can still do that, while people who want the full roster can have that option.

Right now this is just an incomplete port masquerading as "arcade perfect".

Funnily enough I recall reading how some members would've prefered the PS2 version instead of it being the arcade ver. when this compilation was announced =P

TBH I'm just gonna wait til the game is out before deciding on how arcade perfect it is.

We could of had the best of both worlds, but instead we have neither. (Unless you can toggle off Oboro Bishamon, in which case purists should have no qualms.)

I'm still gonna buy this and I hope it does well, but I can't help but be disappointed by how this was handled.

An essential tool while playing Darkstalkers 3 is to utilize Push blocking; press all 3 Punch buttons while blocking to 'push away' your opponent.

This is a really bad piece of misinformation that has been going around for a while and not true at all. To do Advancing Guard in Vampire Savior you need to Piano inputs, and Pianoing 3 inputs only gives you a 25% chance to successfully Advancing Guard. Your chance to AG goes up 25% with every subsequent input, with a 100% chance to AG with 6 piano'd inputs. In addition, you have different strengths of AG depending on which button it activates on, light attack pushing not very far and hard attacks pushing the the furthest away.

Figuring out a good method to piano 6 buttons in block stun at once can be hard, some can do it that have magic hands, but I just slide my hand across the buttons from LK to HP, in an diagonally up-right motion.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll fix that comment on push blocking in due time.

Arranged on the PS2 collection is basically a completely different ROM than the regular Savior ROM on the Collection, which at least from what I can tell doesn't provide all the same dipswitch options, so you can't make it arcade perfect regardless of having the extra characters as well.

Oboro I think is playable on Savior on PS2 (who can be playable in the Arcade version with emulation cheats). The collection version of Savior had a few other changes like stage select, handicap, and even faster speed settings. Its the most arcade perfect version in that collection despite some of those additions. I guess since Oboro was already there they just decided to throw him in. I've already banned him from my tournaments so its whatever.

edit: also Dee is potentially crazy but I haven't had much of a chance to test him in actual play. His basic chain damage I can say is insane lol. He gets free double jump in hard attacks with that stupid j.HP

Alternatively, they could of just included the Arranged version of the game in addition to Savior. Would pretty much have the same effect. (Most people who want the arrange characters don't care about the game being "arcade perfect".)

Part of me still suspects Arranged may be a secret addition to the collection but thats probably not the case at this point lol.

Honestly everybody should just be glad Phobos isn't playable, that character is more derp than any other character already in that game somehow lol. Though I secretly enjoy playing him when I have the chance, nobody enjoys playing me at that point. Activate Dark-Force and win yo.

An unlockable Arranged would be awesome, I don't have much faith in Capcom to deliver though. I'm basically treating Resurrection as a pre-order for DS4, I'll put my money down and wait for it to appear.

D3 Huitzil is the best because of Cecil. Makes the character a lot more interesting and dynamic.

Say what characters do you guys plan on using in VH and VS?
In Hunter I'll main: Phobos/Huitzil, Pyron and maybe Demitri
In Savior: Demitri and Sasquatch

Nah man, you shouldn't do that. With as amazing as Savior I have a really hard time believing they can surpass that with a Sequel. You need to get the game and sit down and put some seriously time in with Savior, it would be a waste not to. Game is easily one of the best fighting games ever made.

I'm not really into the competitive scene of fighters. I'm one of those (weird?) people that prefer the single player content and just messing around with the characters, endings, customizations and such.

That's why having a complete cast is more important to me than it being arcade perfect. I'd rather both scenarios be possible though so everyone could be happy.

I play fighters for the single player content too.

Will this version of Night Warriors not have all the characters I used to use in the old Saturn version? That'd be a bit disappointing.

Haha nice OT :p
Like I told you before, it's a very informative thread.
I'll try to get it for PS3
check your pm's :)

Are there high res versions of these? I would love them as wallpapers for my PC.

Sorry, they where custom made so that size is the biggest you will be able to find. :/

For some reason, being unfamiliar with the complete lore of Darkstalkers, I thought Demitri was a villain.

@Trojita- Demitri does count as a villain, even though he's one of the main characters in the series haha.

Ah I added a small info in the gameplay section about tiers, in at least Darkstalkers 3. Hope I worded it right ^_^;

Are the disc releases region-free?

As far as I know, PS3 ver. should be region-free, 360 would be region locked.

Really exited about this! This is my first time playing DS and the first Capcom fighter I pick up since vanilla SFIV.

Any tips on who to main? I tend to go for characters that are good at close range (Chie in P4A, Jam in GG, Noel in BB).

Off the top of my head, I'd say J. Talbain, Lord Raptor, Rikuo and Sasquatch fit the bill.

I recommend Talbain though since he'd be easy to learn and use.

Pretty much what I do. Also, I like to use both my index and middle finger to slide across the R1/R2 buttons to maximize the likelihood of a GC since I play with a DS3.

Favorite fighting series ever. Game was a revelation for me when it came out in the arcades--started with DarkStalkers 1/Vampire. I could never find a VH cabinet and could not afford a Saturn as we already had a N64/PSone. Parents were not keen about getting another system.

I'm just glad we have an arcade quality port with online online pay.

Stuff like this though makes me regret lack of BC on the PS4, though.

@SolarPowered- If you don't mind me asking, what do you think of the OT?
Okay, but down the road you might want to ask the more informed to give you blurbs about the characters related to gameplay. Those could be pasted onto the current images filled with story trivia which doesn't really help anyone in a game like this.

Good otherwise and I love the banner/images for NW and VSav. I got no problem with you keeping everything else the same. I'd be glad to give you a writeup on Lei Lei whenever if you want. I'm just glad you made the OP.

@Solar- Thanks, actually I may update the OP to link to posts that have strats for the characters per game down the road to replace the move list videos. Of course the strats can be provided by those informed over time.

Pretty much anybody. The entire cast is a threat if they get in your face with an advantage.

What you said is pretty much fine. The only characters I'd personally say are noticeably disadvantaged at the highest levels are Anakaris and Victor, everybody else can compete and destroy if played correctly. Those two still do have their moments though, and they do very well up to a mid-high level.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I wonder if it'll be worth replacing my Saturn copy of Vampire Savior with this. Hmm...

If it's good, I'll probably import the 360 disc version.

pretty excited, though. Darkstalkers is a great series.

in the notes section you mentioned VS-2. Wasn't that game actually hated for the alterations it made?

That game is pretty bad. It made many game system changes, most all of them for the worse. Most of the character changes are random and senseless as well. Not sure what they were really going for with a lot of them.

I do dig Q-Bee having a taller crouching hitbox though!

You can check out my morbid fascination with this game through the Change Log I wrote up.
