Can we talk about how the Oil Ocean Act 1 boss is just a total non-factor

Man, I wish more levels had Knuckles-only variants like Mirage Saloon Act 1. What a fun little level that shows how different a stage can feel when it's not made for Sonic first and everyone else second.

Knuckles Mirage Saloon Act 1 is one of my favorite levels just due to being designed specifically for Knucks.

Plus the music

And his variant of the Caterkiller boss >>> Sonics

This game doesn't even have a homing attack. What the fuck?

Joking aside...Goddamn, the homing attack is one of the WORST things to ever happen to Sonic.

When they introduced homing attacks, that was the beginning of the age of mediocre Sonic games.

Bopping enemies is fun. Why do you think Mario never gave it up?

I 've always liked the homing attack in 3d games. Crossing that robot bridge in SA2 on metal harbor is so satisfying.

I know it's been said before but the soundtrack of this game is amazing. It's tied with Persona 5 for best OST of the year as far as I'm concerned.

Never been a fan. That said, the 3D games at least kinda sorta justify it though.

The 2D ones though? Not really. Especially Sonic 4.

You should've played the rush series. The homing attack in those games kept your momentum going after hitting someone with it, and at least one particular stage had a robot bridge you could cross with the momentum of 1/2 homing attacks.

Now that I've sat down and listened to the soundtrack proper... wow, the true final boss theme is by far the best final boss theme out of the entire series. I never really listened to it that closely when I was doing the actual fight.

Sonic Generations 3DS also shoehorned that homing attack. Didn't like it, made Classic less distinct than Modern.

It was really weird how Sonic 4 and Gens 3DS were the games to introduce the homing attack to 2D Sonic. Before 4, they never had any trouble designing levels without a homing attack. I know it was in Rush, but it was really crappy, barely worked and didn't factor into anything.

I streamed Sonic Mania today!

This video is 2 hours so it's basically starting half an hour in (presumably youtube only allows 2 hours of stream or something?) at Flying Battery Zone but I went from a blank file at Green Hill Zone through to the 'regular' ending and then spent a few minutes getting the last of the Chaos Emeralds :)

Will probably stream Knux and Tails runs soon if anyone is interested!

I think Twitch to Youtube exports have a time-limit, if you used that. If you streamed directly to Youtube, then it should eventually process and publish the whole thing.

The homing attack is basically a admission that you don't actually have enough control over your character for them to be able to expect you to hit an enemy/grab a thing, which is the main reason I don't like it.

Hey they had to adapt Mario to 3D as well, giving him new jump moves to fill in the gaps for how uncomfortable it would be to only have the one jump he had in 2D Mario games before that. Think of Sonic 3D's homing ability as filling in the gaps to bring its version of platforming into 3D. It's still Sonic-ish in that in terms of taking out enemies and crossing gaps you still have to have some sense of level awareness and general timing going on to make it flow well. I can't speak about many 3D Sonics so I don't know how gimmicky it is later on because I never played many of the 3D Sonic games, but I enjoyed it in the Adventure games. Trying to kill enemies in 3D with just the jump and spin abilities would be a nightmare and break the flow of gameplay badly, unless you want to slow Sonic gameplay down.. in which case what's the point.

Thanks yeah, it processed and it's the full playthrough now! :)

A few deaths on the FB2 and OO2 bosses but other than that I think it was a pretty decent run. A bit shabby during Stardust Speedway 2 though perhaps.

I will fight you to the death defending Doomsday Zone. Hell, Doomsday's in Mania's final boss theme.

Sonic 4 Ep. 1's implementation was also garbage: after using a homing attack, Sonic unfurled out of his ball state, leaving him vulnerable.

You could get the homing attack woth classic sonic in the console version of generations as well.

I did play the Rush games. The original Rush is actually one of my favorite Sonic games. I still wasn't a huge fan of the homing attack but I agree it at least lent itself to the style of Rush, which was more about speed than anything else.

The classic gameplay is still the best, in my opinion

Somebody finally got around to exporting the maps. Though some of the files are coming through corrupted.

Green Hill zone Act 1 with Rings:

That's awesome!
It's interesting how the giant rings aren't necessarily on high ground; I think the digital manual suggests (or possibly states outright?) that they're likely to be on high ground otherwise.

Finally had time to finish this today. Fantastic game.

The only non-bug (game crashed out to switch OS in Press Garden Zone when I was flame dashing through a load of ice blocks) complaint I had was the later levels lacked zone transitions.

Level design in Rush was awful though. So many bottomless pits.

Sonic 4 was so weird with that unfurling shit, Sonic would also do it after launching off a slope in ball form

That last UFO stage was surprisingly easy, got it on the first try.

Does it even have bumpers? You could probably get that on the first lap

It's super easy, it's just that because of all the sharp angles and pits, you can't afford to make any mistakes. But that just means your failures are quick, whereas on 5 and 6 you're endlessly chasing the thing. I do think the UFO gets off to a pretty good start on this one compared to the rest though.

It took me forever but I finally got all the silver medals on blue spheres. Now I never want to touch them again!
Whoever designed the bonus "Mania" stages is a madman.

Finally stopped fucking around and got all the Chaos Emeralds and got the true ending.

I really have no fucking clue what I was doing in Egg Reverie; the only thing I sussed out was that Heavy King's projectiles were a fucking problem, and from there I basically just waited to smack whoever was out. Eggman was a fucking joke lol, I'd usually hit him on his way up before he could do aything. I got the last hit on accident because I sneezed lmao.

Way to tie this game into Sonic Forces though. The Hard Boiled Heavies would probably be great there, better than freakin' Zavok, anyway.
🙄

But man this game is a lot of fun just fucking around with, especially with Super Sonic. It was satisfying to make Titanic Monarch Zone trivial after all my fuck ups yesterday when scrambling to get the last two emeralds.

I live in South Florida and we just got hit with the outer rim of Hurricane Irma. The power was out in my house the whole day. Bored I decided to play a little Sonic Mania and low and behold, as I finished a zone (Mirage Salon on my forth playthrough) the power in my house and neighborhood came back on.

Is there anything this game can't do?

The one lasting impression from this game that's going to stick with me for a while is that it has really reminded me what "replay value" can actually mean, particularly in the context of an action game's single-player campaign. I think the past decade or two has conditioned me into reducing that concept to a checklist: get all the achievements, unlock all the bonus content, collect all the trinkets, get the true ending, wait for the next DLC to drop, etc. But Sonic Mania is a case where I can still take a new spin on a level or two after a dozen or so plays. I'm occasionally forcing myself to backtrack through unseen routes via debug mode now just to see what I've still been skipping for all of this time. And it's been a long time since I've replayed a game so much in this manner--not for the sake of unlocking/completing any particular goal, but rather for the sake of just finding more game to play.

Holy shit. Rest in peace friend. I'm no achievement hunter, just a content completionist. Silver is fine by me! I got a few gold, but all gold? Fuck no.

You deserve a vacation.

I didn't find getting golds much harder than silvers. The really hard levels, either you're getting all the rings anyway or, to speak from my experience, you're replaying the levels so many times that you know exactly where to go and when and can't help but know where every ring is.

I was so happy to find 7 big rings before act 2 of chemical plant zone. Now a good run will net me Super Sonic quickly, just like how I like to play the old games!

Came here to brag, see maps are now being posted. Well that feels like a waste of effort. :)

I think the trickiest thing about perfecting the blue sphere stages in Mania's campaign is that there are 32 of them in rotation. You might be starting to come to grips with one particular stage, but if you flub it at the end, then you might have to wait a long time before seeing it again, by which time you've forgotten most of what you had learned earlier. It gets a lot easier once you start knocking a few of them completely out of the rotation and can learn more quickly due to repetition.

Still, the blue sphere stages in the campaign aren't nearly as daunting as some of the pseudo-random stages from the old lock-on game, which I played more than I care to admit. Anyone else suffer through nonsense like this 20 years ago?
