Darkwatch Discussion

Anyone else pick this up today? I'm not to far into it but it seems so-so. The only thing I can't figure out it why its not running in progressive scan mode. I'm fairly certain the OXM demos that were out were running progressive. I'm not 100% sure though. Anyone have either of the demos to confirm this?

I put about an hour into the Xbox version today, single player only as I don't care about Live. The whole experience has been very fun so far. Its a pretty decent fps, good production values and with some real 60fps polished gameplay. The story moves rather quickly and doesn't seem to hokey but its not as good as something like Cold Winter, which I suppose really isn't saying too much. I'd say its nothing special but i'm partiucarly partial to fps and over the top ragdoll physics so it should give me much enjoyment this weekend.

I do have some problems with the lack of 480p and no co-op in the xbox version. Seems kinda lame on Capcom's/High Moons part. The singleplayer is still good fun though. I'd recommend it.

Yea. Lack of 480p on an xbox title is just plain pitiful. Theres really no excuse. I think I'm gonna put some time into beating it then just get rid of it.

was just checking out the ign review..

Unfortunately Darkwatch has a couple of holdups that prevent it from reaching the same lofty acclaim awarded to other console FPS darlings like Red Faction and TimeSplitters.
hmm... darlings eh.

At least we get to see some top notch voice-acting from Rose McGowen as the sultry Tala, though, and the red hot love scene has to be seen to be believed.
what?!

apparently only ps2 version has coop?

sounds like its worth a rental to check it out at least

Been interested in this one for awhile. I'll give it a rental, but not really interested in playing online. The online demo in OXM didn't blow me away, but the game looked good.

The hell? Co-op on PS2 only? No 480p support in either version? Sub-Red Faction quality (which WAS fun...in 2001, but is horribly dated now)? What the hell are they trying to sell us here?

Yeah, no co-op is pretty lame but I think I'm near the end of the story after putting in some hours (according to the game stats a little over 240 minutes so far, discluding all the deaths)

I think the story is pretty good. Later there's also a
brief sex scene which was one of those "didn't look before you leap" moments, as you find out later. Deserves the M rating for sure heh

The whole good/evil thing doesn't seem to have many repurcussions other than gaining different powers and changing the story slightly (as some scenes regardless of whether you choose good or evil unfold no matter what, much like in other storylines like KOTOR)

Overall 8.5 out of 10 IMO

Darkwatch pros and cons:

PS2 version:

Pros

* Story co-op mode.
* Multi-player modes (split-screen).
* Exclusive "War Train" level.
* Bonus "Explosive" weapon.

Cons:

* No online modes.
* Chuggier frame-rate.
* Looks uglier.
* No progressive-scan compatibility.

Xbox version:

Pros

* Xbox-Live deathmatches.
* Xbox-Live multi-player modes.
* Multi-player modes (System Link)
* Smoother frame-rate.
* Looks better overall.

Cons

* No story co-op mode.
* No "War Train" level.
* No bonus "Explosive" weapon.
* No progressive-scan compatibilty.

Looks like High Moon Studios gimped both versions. Pick the version that suits you best. :/

I played a bit of the PS2 version, (didn't try co-op) and while the game plays decently enough. Fine-tuning is a constant strain given the sluggishness at which the game seems to move. It's about 5fps or so under par, JUST enough to annoy without truly harming the experience. Xbox is likely better.

I have a softspot for these gothic horror kill'em games. I even enjoyed Bloodrayne 1, and this is like a vampiric equivalent of Serious Sam...just with far more confined zones and vastly superior variety to the level makeup.

Coming straight off of playing Timesplitters 3, it's a step down, but serviceable filler all the same. The story is kinda neat and the vampiric abilities mix up the strafing/shooting well enough.

Good impressions. I know I said I'd be picking up my copy up but I have my hands full with Galleon(very fun game btw) and Sky Gunners so I'll have to pass I guess. Its good to hear that the game plays well enough though,I especially like hearing that its sort of a mix a vampire overworld meets Serious Sam,very nice.

I'll do that but abit later today. I've got to get some sleep otherwise I'll be dead on my feet later this morning. I'll just add that the game pretty much fixes alot of thigs that was wrong with Tomb Raider. climbing over ledges,jumping,pulling outweapons in a hurry when youre in a jam are pretty easy to use as well. Ofcourse the visuals are of Dreamcast quality,but thats forgiveable to me,because the game plays pretty well in the end. The exporation and -platforming really do a good job of pulling you in though. I guess because the control is pretty forgiving,theres no stupid delayed control that will end wth you havingto restart your area over because of an annoying death.

The combat engine that involves guns,hand to hand action,and sword fighting is also a nice touch to an already interesting game as it is. Doesn't feel tacked on at all. It goes well when you see a cinematic and realize that around harder to reach areas you've got villains waiting for you,so the combat is layed out well and at just the right intervals in the game. Another plus in this game is that if you explore your surrounding areas youre rewarded with amo,health,and better swords to use later as the game progresses so those battles are dependant on your exploration skills here.

Hmm-looks like I don't need to really do an impression of the game,I nailed my thoughts perfectly here. I'll just cut and paste them over to the Galleon thread later today I guess.

Bottom line is that for exploration and platforming this game delivers quite well. Its feels every bit as good as the original Tomb Raiders 1 and 2 did,only more fine tuned control mixed with a pretty fun combat engine.

Btw-sorry about the spelling. Its really late and I'm beat.

I got to play a bit of Darkwatch. Fairly boring if satisfactory in that it hits all the general points of a decent shooter and has good controls, etc. I can't imagine paying $50 for it.

Painkiller has to be LOVED! Game is great. Isn't it coming to Xdude this year? I pray it's playable over LIVE. Painkiller is what I wanted from a new "Doom" if the comparison even makes sense.

The only reason to remove 480p is some undesirable graphic effect when say an explosion (for example is) not interlaced. This means that an artisist somewhere decided his cool smoke effect was more important than 480p because it looked dithered in progressive.

I got Darkwatch as a total impulse buy and have put into it a couple of hours. So far I've been pleasantly surprise. It does feel like Serious Sam + Painkiller.

This is a stupid reason (not knocking on you for posting it.)

Painkiller's lack of coop mode keeps it from greatness. It would be such an amazing coop game too.

Painkiller had some pretty retarded level design. Felt more like a tour of europe than surviving through hell. Anyway, Darkwatch is pretty cool. It's more doom like than doom 3.

I was quite a big fan of the locales in the game. The orphanage, theater, asylum, and even that massive bridge. All threw subtle wrinkles into the shooting spree. Thematicaly it was all over the place, but cmon now! That amusement park in the expansion pack is :eek

The individual challenges for earning cards hooked me greatly too.

I just wish it kept more with the horror theme early in the game. I just want someone to do a game like doom 1 and 2, in similar theme and gameplay. I guess Darkwatch will be the closest I get for the moment

I beat it and got the first ending, clocked in at a total of 248 minutes for the whole thing. This discludes the times you've restarted/died so I probably played about 6-8 hours total for the 1st ending (There's 2 endings total)
