For those who don't know, Das Racist were a rap group consisting of Heems, Kool A.D., and their hype-man Dapwell. They were around from like 2008 until 2012 when they broke up seemingly at the peak of their career.

Known for their creative and often hilarious lyrics, they quickly developed a passionate following.

A couple of my favorite songs (but really, i like almost everything they ever put out).

Rainbow in the Dark:

So yeah, they got big. Then quit. What went wrong? There are countless interviews, but i thought Dapwell's recent twitter rant to be fairly illuminating:
"Some Das Racist ramblings 1) the name sucked but changing the name of yr group mid-stream is a pain in the ass move.

2) a handful of terrible press photos that made us look like cornballs. also, our "racially ambiguous" (white peepoo talk for non-black) identities made us unappealing to rap fans who fetishize black america and our being "funny" made us unappealing to people who fetishize drugs/violence. so you have a bunch of middle american/british people calling us hipster or soft or w/e or whatever when it was just two brown dudes from queens and a brown dude from the bay.

3) "overeducated" (mostly) white critics flexing their english degrees kept asserting that our songs were some sort of "commentary" on rap which pegged as as outsiders poking fun at something we weren't a part of. ultimately we released ~50 songs, majority of which were pretty straightforward rap songs, some had weirdo choruses. Wack fans coming up like "OH, I DON'T EVEN LIKE RAP, BUT I LIKE YA'LL"

All that shit sucked, but a lot of it was straight. I was a roadie/dancer though, keep that in mind. -FIN- Not complaining, amazing experience, blah blah. People ask why we stopped doing it, so listing some of the (smaller) reasons publicly."

I saw them live twice, both times it felt like they did not give a shit/did not want to be there. I always felt like they really resented having me (a white male) as a fan. Luckily Danny Brown opened for them and absolutely killed it.

Like it never bothered me that their lyrics went in that direction, but they often seem legitimately annoyed that white people and blogs (pitchfork) paid more attention to their music than "black" focused outlets.

Basically it seems they created this thing, but it made them appeal to an audience they didn't care about/weren't attached to. So they just sort of blew everything up and started over.

Which part of me really admires. To them it wasn't about the money, it was making the music they wanted to make. And it may not have been there intention, but they really did get me more into a lot of modern rap. Whether they would be happy with that fact i don't know. But it is true.

Heems and Kool A.D. are still making some sick as music. It is just a shame they aren't doing it together....

Heems (as Swetshop Boys) Benny Lava: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLlYykSUXLk

Kook A.D. Tight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EagSKvZdZXE

Because honestly, that heems verse could be a das racist song no problems. So it isn't like they suddenly moved away from making that type of music all together.

Two dudes who brought out the best in each other and we will likely never see them on the same track again. How sad.

So yeah, talk about your favorite songs. Recommend some newer music they are involved in. Talk about why you think the split really happened. Or just blast some cool tunes.

Das Racist was holding Kool A.D. back as an artist honestly...And there studio work was completely terrible.

Kool A.D.'s work with Kass and his Word Okay, Not Okay series give me reason to not miss DR as much. Nehru Jackets was also really dope, but Heems has fell off.

Though I liked this recent Heems feature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftu90PTyKy4

said this in the other thread, but Sit Down, Man is a pretty much perfect album in my eyes. Apart from the skits I never skip a track when I listen to it.

Seen them perform and met both of them separately. Kool A.D. during the Run the Jewels Tour (which was a godlike show btw) and Heems at a nearby college. Kool A.D. seemed chill enough, Heems was a bit of a prick, but I guess that was to be expected. I think I read an interview with Despot somewhere saying that Heems genuinely hates white people, and Victor mostly just played it up for the band.

Yeah. I was pretty disappointed with Relax when it first came out after how strong their mixtapes had been.

I sort of came back to it and appreciated it more.

Also Heems playing guitar will never not be funny to me

Hmm. Sounds like Drake haters.

Sit Down, Man is my go-to 'wanna listen to some rap' album outside of King Gheedorah's Take Me To Your Leader.

I've always enjoyed the hell out of these guys, and their split bummed me out, but I agree that once they Studio'd up, the quality really panned out.

I had the chance of watching them play in Honolulu, but I went to watch my friends cover band play instead. One of biggest regrets :/

kinda feel like LMFAO ripped them off.

I really enjoy their Pizza Hut+Taco Bell song.

I dunno, LMFAO was always fairly straightforward about being a novelty/comedy club music act and they broke up just at the point when everyone was kind of over it.

From what I gather here, Das Racist was trying to be taken seriously by a group that just refused to.

Yeah, I kind of get that from Heems, like I said in the Giant Bomb thread.

oh god Lakutis please stop

Really feeling Exquire on that one, though.

I went to see MC Chris instead of Gwar. I know your pain, man.

Did he cry on stage?

Did he cry on stage?

He kept bringing up the twitter thing (which was just blowing up at the time) and then played one of the songs off his new album at the time like 4 times because people screwed up the 'clapping along with him' thing. At the end of the 4th time we were all kind of done with his shit.

I really only went because Powerglove was touring with him. And those guys are AMAZING live.

Man, he just seems terrible live, even if I already didn't hate his shit.

I kinda liked them, but I'm glad this thread has brought Kool AD's solo work to my attention. Really liking "Tight". I"ll have to check the whole album out.

I always kick myself for not listening to these guys more. Still plan on getting way into their mixtapes sometime. I really never get more than halfway (they're pretty long). Relax was a disappoitment but Michael Jackson is so amazing (especially considering the chorus originated(?) from this freestyle).

Combination PIzza Hut and Taco Bell is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I love putting it on for people who haven't heard it and see them from shaking their head and saying it's stupid to singing along by the end of the song.

Honorable mention to You Oughta Know and Puerto Rican Cousins.

Saw them live at Pitchfork Festival 2012 and they seemed to be having fun. Lots of energy.

Heems' and Kool A.D.'s solo stuff >>>>>> Das Racist

Kool A.D. has had a much better solo career and the dude is making mad money from selling his drawings on Instagram

EDIT; Fun fact, Heems follows Kool A.D. on Twitter, but Kool A.D. doesn't follow him

LOL People know who Lakutis is? I only know him because he opened up for RiFF Raff in NY. He was so wasted he could not finish his set. He stage dived and no one caught him. Security had to pick him up off the floor and get him back on stage.

He pops up on the DR mixtapes and he actually isn't too bad there.

His verse on Amazing isn't terrible. That's the only compliment I will give him.

No You Oughta Know and Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell in the OP?

For shame.

Saw them once at a festival.
They just seemed angry.

Das Racist >>>> kool and heems' solo careers.

all three records are amazing, sit down man being the best. You Oughta Know probably my favorite track

Victor's solo stuff is fun and Heems' is too. Their styles meshed so well though.

I feel like white listeners are supposed to feel uncomfortable or unwanted kinda, in that DR (justifiably) ridiculed whiteness. Which a lot of white people are uncomfortable with because we aren't as used to being called out as a racial group, white is "the norm." Listening to DR as a white person involves negotiating with a defensibly negative portrait of white people to make you more conscious of the way your race impacts your life

but also it's good rap music
the best thing to come out of das racist/greenhead is big baby gandhi

been a villain
boomerang
green card
was way into no1 2 look up 2, rest is eh.

bahaha

I liked both of Lakutis' mixtapes.

Gandhi definitely ain't the best that's fucking hilarious though, the guy should stick to ghost writing. And Lakutis mixtape this year was super dope

god damn it, you already posted this, but i dug debut a whole lot whenever it came out and i still play it from time to time

I've only listened to stuff they've done since breaking up. Loved Nerhru Jackets and I thought Coke Boys 5 was pretty good too.

I'll get to Sit Down, Man and Relax soon enough.

Word. 3 Seashells has had incredible staying power with me.

Kool AD is putting out better shit than the entirety of the Das discography. Believe it.
