LONDON — David Attenborough has come on board to narrate natural history series “Planet Earth II,” which is being presented to international buyers at a BBC Worldwide sales event in Liverpool, England tomorrow.

BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the U.K. broadcaster, has inked its first sales on the six-part show, ahead of BBC Worldwide Showcase, which draws 700 international buyers.

“Planet Earth II,” previously known by its working title “One Planet,” explores “the characteristics of Earth’s most iconic habitats and the extraordinary ways animals survive within them.”

Gunton said: “Ten years after ‘Planet Earth’ first brought the wonders of the natural world to viewers in HD, ‘Planet Earth II’ is another game-changer. Shot in UHD, the epic scale and ambition of this series is second to none. It will be a truly immersive experience, providing audiences with a unique perspective on the most extraordinary places and animals on our planet.”

Can't believe its been 10 years but the original Planet Earth was mind blowing. Thought GAF would love this!

day 1

On another note, Planet Earth was the first ever bluray i bought back in the day. Good stuff.

We all know Netflix is getting a superior sequel coming out in 2019 called "Our Planet", done by the folks who did the original show. This is BBC's "me too" moment.

“Our Planet is going to raise the bar for natural history landmarks.”

WWF will provide Silverback and Netflix access to the areas it currently protects. The filmmakers plan to use cutting-edge 4K technology and “a range of specially produced storytelling for multi-media platforms.” Our Planet sounds like it’ll pick up where its predecessor left off, taking “viewers into never-before-filmed wilderness areas from the ice caps and deep ocean to deserts and remote forests, introducing them to the most precious species and places that must withstand the impact of humanity so generations to come can enjoy the bounties of the natural world.”

I'm glad it's not Oprah.

Can't wait to watch this. I didn't see mention of a release date, any idea?

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but when is the narration typically completed? Dude's a few months shy of being 90.

Love David Attenborough.

When I was struggling with insomnia, watching Planet Earth was something that really helped me because it's just so relaxing (And I don't mean "boring", the visuals with his narration is certainly mesmerizing). I tend to rewatch a lot of his stuff as part of my winding down before bed part of my night, so something new to watch is great news.

This is the first time I ever considered upgrading to a 4k tv.

it honestly seems to me like that was the major reason people 10 years ago bought HDTVs... so they could watch Planet Earth.

Interesting that team behind PE is doing this Netflix series... probably why the BBC is changing the name to Planet Earth II.

Maybe, maybe not. But the BBC version will have much better picture quality because of the bitrate.

UHD Blu-ray >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> UHD Netflix

You do know Netflix stuff gets put on Blu-ray too, right?

Life Story was filmed in 4K but was broadcast in 1080i and put on Blu-ray in 1080i. No other way to watch it currently.

Lol, you really think Netflix can match the experience and quality of the BBC's natural history unit, a whole BBC dept. dedicated for the last 60yrs to making natural history programmes.

..yeah, good luck with that.

Sheesh - I got him confused with Richard Attenborough and thought they raised the dead somehow...

Anywho, I recall PE1 was in 1080i, not 1080p, and even though it was nice, it had lots of artifacts on my 1080p screen/BD at the time.

I hope this newer format fixes it. Even though I'll have to downscale to 1080p from UHD, it's those artifacts that popped up during dark scenes that messed it up for me.

Still, PE1 was the first BD I bought and watching that with surround sound for the first time was mind-blowing.

Well, Fothergill, at least. Not sure who else was involved from Planet Earth. Planet Earth II is still from the BBC's Natural History Unit which - barring a mass exodus - are the people I'd probably regard as "the folks who did the original show".

Edit: Ah, Silverback were behind The Hunt, too. That makes more sense.

Either way, I think if Planet Earth 2 is happening this year that suggests it's been in production for a while! It might well have some people going from this to Netflix's series.

Your Blu-ray player should deinterlace 1080i to 1080p. Also it's worth investing in the Planet Earth: Special Edition

They upgraded to 50GB discs (the original edition used 25GB) and used much better video encodes, the difference is night and day.

The audio was also bumped from standard Dolby Digital 5.1 to DTS-HD HR 5.1

David Attenborough is my favorite. Did you guys know his brother is Richard Attenborough, who played Hammond in Jurassic Park?

OHH my face just lit up reading this. Attenborough is the bessssst for nature documentaries. Can't freaking wait for Planet Earth II !

This'll be the first thing I get once I get a 4k display/projector.

The mountains feature of Planet Earth was my go to thing to show off my new 1080p projector back when I got it in 2009.

2009? You have the original.

Time to upgrade to the Special Edition :)

Planet Earth II is a dumb name though.

I guess it's because the later hallmark series didn't sell as much even though they are of equal or better quality?
