David Bowie predicting the impact of the internet in 1999

He really hit the nail on the head with where he felt the internet could take people. I particularly like his idea that it would be the hotbed of subversive thought that would really get people's attention, especially in comparison to how comparatively blah the 90s were. It also got me thinking that we're seeing this clamped down on massively now that corporations have been trying to take over the internet, enforcing soulless "advertiser friendly" content, making subversive content increasingly rare in recent years. Not to mention social media and cancel culture wouldn't be remotely capable of digesting any form of subversive entertainment without losing their collective shit.

I love this interview.

Interviews with icons like Bowie can really bring out how thought provoking they really are.

As you say, his insight to how the internet will evolve over the next 20 years was so spot on, its quite amazing.

We're still in the wild west days of the internet, give it another 20 years and we'll see what happens!

I love the (paraphrasing) "The internet absolutely shows us that we are living in total fragmentation" & "I think we're on the cusp of something exhilarating and terrifying."

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I learned a while ago that he had an internet company and a web based service that was pretty much what Instagram is now for many celebrities, it allowed him to personally interact with fans. Bowie was a visionary.

We cancelled this guy I am afraid, Cancel Statute 1.5 - Sex with a minor, level - problematic. Please remove all links or be subject to punishment under the 'Guilty by association act, part III'.

That's fascinating - an almost eerie level of foresight. How much acid does one need to drop to see this far ahead?

I mean, he DID invent alternating current, wireless power transfer and teleportation. is it any surprise he predicted how important the internet is?

yeah the dude was genius. i like some of his quotes, like this:

“Cause I'd rather stay here
With all the madmen
Than perish with the sadmen roaming free
And I'd rather play here
With all the madmen
For I'm quite content they're all as sane
As me.

This song was largely inspired by his half brother Terry Burns whom suffered from schizophrenia. He was put into an institution around 69 and jumped in front of a train in the mid 80s. That song was written around 1970 or so, im pretty sure bits and pieces of Terry show up in other songs as well.

Bowie was way ahead of the internet and was really big into cyberpunk and william gibson in the 90s. Just listen to Outside or Hours. I remember in the late 90s early 2000s he had his own internet service.

If you listen to the single Slow Burn from the 2002 album Heathen..its amazing how apt those lyrics are now

Here shall we live in this terrible town
Where the price for our minds
Shall squeeze them tight like a fist

And the walls shall have eyes
And the doors shall have ears
But we'll dance in their dark
And they'll play with our lives

Maybe, maybe not, he also achieved fuck loads more with his life than most of us will ever dream of.
Now where were we...
Well, so did Hitler, Stalin, Gargamel, Mao, and Pol Pot, but we don’t celebrate their accomplishments because of all the mass murder/genocide and shit.

played the long game
Idk if I had the money in 1999 I would have gone all in on the Internet too. If he had said this in 1994 I’d be impressed, but at the height of the dot
Com boom? Just seems like he was jumping on the bandwagon.

Bowie was one of my largest artistic inspirations growing up, when he passed away i didnt come out of my room for a few days, it was like losing a father and immediately started working on a piece inspired by him.

So much futurism, fantasy and art was inspired by him and his work so much so that i think people neglect to understand just how much of an influence his impact was on culture through intricately woven ways. This can be said about a lot of musicians from the 60s and 70s of course but i think Bowies influence went far beyond just musical inspiration.

Kind of a point that he should leave and then that year the world should become so strange.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
In terms of diluting the dualities, he did push that forward in his own way. One of the biggest being male and female. Regardless of whether it was intentional or not.

The guy was very in tune with this tidal wave, which the internet has taken on and will continue snowballing into the future.

Fucking genius. I'll be forever thankful that Let's Dance was 1st place the day I was born. Grew up loving his work.

Possibly banging a minor vs mass murder are not remotely equivalent. Get outta here with this. Dude was an artist like no other.

wasnt intentional. I think some of After All is def about Terry as well possibly bewley brothers. Jump They Say is 100 percent about his suicide.

Bowie said he never wrote personal songs but that isnt true, just listen to letter to Hermione. I think lke the best artists every piece is personal even when writing about something else...you put yourself in that music instead writing simple direct songs about yourself.

Great musician, but apparently ...
It's rock and roll, everyone's fucking everyone, I think age, sex, gender and morals are hardly at the forefront of the conversations when the party starts.
He was no doubt flawed, everyone is but to compare him to folk like Hitler and Pol Pot is so laughably fucking pathetic....even for the internet, that I'm having trouble believing I'm actually typing a bloody retort to it.

And yet, here we are. Your whole life has led to this moment.

Can we really not? He's dead, and was never convicted of anything. There's no taking him to court, so trying to smear someone from beyond the grave is pretty pointless.

Normally I’d say “suck my ass and/or tits,” but that’s the old me. The new me appreciates your feedback and will take it into consideration in the future when topics regarding Bowie’s pedophilia come up.

Let's put it another way. What does any of that have to do with what was said in the video? The thread was made to discuss the content of the video. Perhaps you could make a separate thread about Bowie if you feel so passionate about it.

Thank you for the recommendation, but I have to disagree. In the video, he comments on the Internet which as you know is the primary tool for the modern day pedophile.

The Beeb currently have his complete Glastonbury 2000 set up on iPlayer for those who can use it.

Yeah I watched it last night - it was fantastic. Good to hear Little Wonder, one of his later tracks and an absolute gem. The world is a shittier place without him.
