Day/Night Cycles In Games

I'm doing a project for school about lighting in video games, but I need to get some screenshots to show examples of day/night cycles in games. I'd like to find examples from these games and series:

GTA
Zelda
Star Fox Adventures

Where should I look?

whatcha need, perhaps someone can snap screens off a TV card...

i would, because i love you guys.

demi is all about love

Yeah I found that GTA thing, it's exactly what I was looking for. Now I just need something similar for the other games (and Animal Crossing and Jak would be good too...).

check out swg and watch as teh shadows move with the sun... pretty cool effect. think there was a video that showed this but dunno where to get it

Oh, how forgetful we are...

Castlevania II. Respect the classics.

Yeah, I know, not a good example of lighting in games, but it's the first day/night cycle game I can recall.

Quest for Glory 1(or Hero's Quest) and King Quest 4, altough this one wasn't realtime, it was a triggered event iirc.

Namco's Soul Edge which had AWESOME looking day/night cycles, came out in 1995 in arcades and 1996 on Playstation, years before Zelda OOT was released in 1998.

This topic reminds me of Pokemon Silver/Gold.

The night/day thing was pulled off semi-well in that. However, I'm REALLY glad those were the only games to use it. Ruby/Sapphire were a lot more playable.

Another franchise worth considering, even if its just a brief mention or a graphic insert between your PPT slides is Sim City 4. It has a magnificent day/night system.

It's been a long time since I played Soul Edge, and even when I did, it wasn't very often. Did it have timed cycles (which would be really weird for a fighting game), or did it just have alternate day/night stages (which aren't really the same thing)?

I suggest looking at Fable too, it has a very nice night/day cycle management.

And don't forget Morrowind !
Cycle between night/day was also a theme in Mario Party 6, but I'm not sure it would fit in with the other games mentioned :)

This looks like yet another good opportunity to mention Nintendogs. I just took my Drinky for a nighttime stroll around town, in fact!

Oh wait, the topic is Day/Night Cycles in Games. My bad! LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

YES! It was pretty cool having that night/day thing, but I'm glad it's gone from recent versions cause sometimes I only have time to play at a certain time of day. The realtime clock works for some games like Animal Crossing and I guess MMORPGs, but others, it feel's like I'm being forced or limited by the time. It stops being cool and becomes an inconvenience.

Dragon Quest III had day/night cycles, didn't it? If not, IV definitely did.

Yeah, 3-5 did... not sure if 6 did, I don't really remember. But I remember in 3 and 5, it affecting the gameplay (certain items you can only get at night, certain dungeons you can only enter at night).

goddamnit.. this game is so fucking sexy...

I wish they've done WW 2, but that won't help Nintendo :(

they should lend the engine to Ratchet and Clank makers and let them develop a game for the Cube as a new "collaboration" :lol

It had complete time cycles; you could watch the sun move across the sky. The sun moved FAST too, as you could get a complete day and night in over the course of a 3-round battle. IIRC character shadows were affected in real time by the sun's position.

This is all based on the arcade version, as I didn't play it on PSX much.

the best is when it affects gameplay like Ultima 7 with full npc scheduling and day/night events..

In Majora's Mask the NPC's were like that too where they actual seemed to be living a life in that 3 day cycle... one of my favorite parts of the game.

You could techincally say Sonic 1 did.

Green Hill Zone - Morning
Marble Zone - Afternoon
Spring Yard Zone - Late Afternoon
Labyrinth Zone - Evening?
Star Light Zone - Night
Scrap Brain - Early Morning.

I hated Wind Waker, and I dread the day that Wind Waker 2 (or another Zelda with the same rendering style and awful artwork) is announced.

long live the 'normal' style of OOT and Zelda 2005
