Dead Space & The Callisto Protocol Director, Glen Schofield, says he might be done directing games as his daughters new game couldn't find funding

"But maybe I've directed my last game. Who knows? If so, thank you [for] playing my games. "Game industry, it's tough out there," Schofield wrote on LinkedIn, explaining that an idea he had been working on with his daughter – herself a developer with eight years' experience – wasn't being picked up."

Already being discussed

Good. This guy decided it was a good idea to put the real ending of Callisto Protocol behind a paid DLC and it was terrible, like the rest of the game.

It might not have been his decision. The game cost a crazy amount of money to make, IIRC. Weirdly so, since it had like a 3 year dev cycle which is very rapid for an AAA game.

Publisher probably looked at any opportunity to recoup costs.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a push from Krafton. Not like they're an innocent publisher.

Exactly!

Shame, I really like Glen, so it would be cool to see this come together. If it does, hopefully they lean away from hiring real actors/actresses. Between that, paying for their likeness, etc. It all gets so unnecessarily expensive. I really don't see the point in going that route unless the budget is there to do so and needs to be used, lol.

I'm honestly baffled why some current devs resort to this sort of approach, Miguel. Designing a new character from the ground up seems more personal and imaginative than phoning in (scanning) someone's IRL appearance and "calling it a day" (I know it entails more than just simply doing that).

Dude's last games was a commercial flop... what did he expect?

For a nepo baby to actually reap the benefits of being a nepo baby, the famous parent whose clout they're looking to benefit from actually has to be successful.

Yeah, it honestly makes no sense to me. I legitimately think it's because they have a budget for the project and it has to be spent. It's an easy place to spend it, lol.

Dead Space 1 and 2 were really fun and I was really hyped for the Callisto Protocol when they first announced it. But the actual game was mid mostly because of the bigger focus on melee which doesn't fit these kind of game.

Surpremely silly mandate if that's the case imo. They should take those excessive funds and allocate them elsewhere, into other projects where they're needed, or set them aside if necessary. If investors get angsty about it, they should just be reassured things are progressing as planned.

He made the only survival horror that can look RE series in the eye.
And from old interviews I've seen he is a true and passionate gamer.

This guy deserved better.

his first mistake was trying to make a survival horror game. no one aside from RE can sell those by the millions. Dead Space was originally a flop, and a cult hit at best. These games just dont sell 10-20 million units like Uncharted or GOW.

He has experience making great CoD campaigns. He shouldve pitched something like that.

Also, he's an industry veteran of like 30 years. he shouldnt have to pitch anything. The fact is that he left all of the studios he created and now he's in a situation where he has to beg for money. Nah, you shouldve stuck by your studios and secured enough capital by now to fund your own game. He's asking for $20 million? Thats less than 300k copies for a $70 game.

And maybe dont sell your studios to Activision or Krafton to make a quick buck or you wouldve had a studio to make games with.

It's their time now, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, their likeness and other horror games that've been absent the whole time. He literally took advantage of that long gap. One of the reasons I liked Mass Effect is it's likeness to Resident Evil, I just can't deny it adds tons of value to that franchise.
