Dear Nintendo: What the hell happened to Pilotwings?

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
When the 64 launched I got both games with it, and Wave Race as soon as it had come out. I might be crazy, but of the three big launch window games (I guess KI and Cruisin' USA were considered big at the time too) Pilotwings was my favorite.

First, the graphics were unbelievably good. Just sailing around on the hangglider (or better yet, the birdsuit) was relaxing as could be. Little America (or whatever that island was called) was amazing. At that point in time a truly 3d game was still novel, let alone one that looked like places I could recognize.

More than anything, the game was relaxing and very fresh. To this day there has yet to be a game that played like either of the Pilotwings games (though I much prefer Pilotwings 64).. and while there isnt alot to do in the games what is there is pure fun... there better be a Pilotwings on Revolution, and I dont mean downloadable ports of the N64 or SNES games.

Loved the SNES one, it had this great chilled-out thing about it.

The N64 one wasn't bad, just not in the same spirit as the original in my opinion. It sort of lost something by trying to be too realistic, and it also had some of the worst character design this side of Rare!

I hope chances of a Revolution one haven't died with Factor5 jumping ship. It's the right type of game to showcase a new control method, especially if gyros are involved somewhere.

Factor 5 was the big rumor wasn't it. Maybe it's not out of the window just yet?

it was the rumor, but they went the way of PS3 for next gen AFAIK. Plus, Factor Five might be able to make good looking games, but I dont think they would have been able to get the feel right for the game..

Sky Odyssey is about the closest thing to Pilotwings this gen.

I LOVED THAT TITAN STAGE!!

where you had to battle the titan...member!!

remember!!

that was soooo cooool.

No really, I played that game at a friend's house and it almost made me buy an N64. Awesome stuff.

I also want to see another LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL!!

that game kicked ass, loved it on the NES.

Anyone remember that game?!?

Pilotwings was used to showcase the SuperFamicon graphic abilities. The fact that it was simple and fun to play was a bonus.

Honestly, I think a Pilotwings for the Revolution that just rehases what's been done before but with better graphics won't be considered a classic, no matter how good it plays. It's a game that really don't need upgrading unless there's something fundamentally new to it.

if it was not for Pilotwings, I might not have owned a Nintendo system until Gamecube came along, which ironically never got a Pilotwings game itself.

Dear Nintendo: What the hell happened to Pilotwings?

What about Starfox And Mario? WTF happened Nintendo? Too busy counting your million yen bills to gives us the quality of the older games?

Given the Revolution's unique hardware, i say a Pilotwings sequel iz highly possible.

Until then, enjoy the classics that will be available for dl on the system (with updated versions to boot! Possibly).

You can basically say that about every Nintendo franchise on the Cube. I mean, really, has anyone here been satisfied with the new games Nintendo's been dishing out on the Cube? I don't think so, I know these games aren't up to par.

So let's not just question Starfox and Mario. Let's question them all. Just about every game Nintendo has released does not have the same charm as the originals. Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Mario Kart if you want to get technical about it. These games have all strayed from the very qualities that made them what they were. Whether it be different graphics, different control scheme, different prespective, or needless additions, none of these games excel in the areas they once did. I like to call it charm, but it's probably something else.

I'm not trying to "bash" here or whatever, I'm just somebody who feels estranged with Nintendo after their helpless attempts to recapture our imaginations with their Gamecube titles. So, I have to say, I'm real glad Nintendo hasn't tried to 'update' Pilot Wings, because I don't want them ruining my past memories of a classic game. They basically ruined all there other franchies, they should leave this one alone. Get some new ideas, jerks.

Most of N's updates hav mor or less been very pleasing. Better than Sega, that's for sure.

You guys seriously need to go find some other company to bash. Why not campaign for Sega?

And this I can definitely agree with. But Mario Sunshine is encroaching on Sega/Capbomb-esque levels of suck. All I care about for the rest of the year is Zelda. Hell, I might end up buying more games for my 360 if I get one this year than I've gotten for my GC in the last two years. :( PEACE.

Man, if there was a new Pilotwings for Revolution, I would be sold here and now, a good Starfox would have the same desired effect.

Well, let's look at the franchises:

-Metroid: Prime right up there IMO with Super Metroid for one of my all time fav games.
-DK: Jungle Beat beats the crap out of DK 64. I would even go as far as to say it was better than the DKC series. So freaking fun.
-Zelda: I don't think Zelda WW was quite up to OOT standards (basically because it was rushed), but Twilight princess seems to be the game that will do it later this year.
-Starfox had nothing to do with their development teams this generation, so I can't say anything about the crap that Rare put out and the game Namco put together. Bad decision on outsourcing that franchise. :(
-Fzero: GX was an excellent addition to the franchise, good decison of giving it to AV.
-Mario: Honestly I just went back to play Mario 64, and if Sunshine didn't have the limited tropical feel and again, a rushed ending, no doubt it would be better than Mario 64 IMO. Controls, the waterpack, and challenges were extremely well done.
-Kirby and Mario Kart: I'll give you those ones. Air Ride sucks and other Mario Karts were better.

I think that about covers most of the big names. Doesn't seem to me that they RUINED any franchises on the cube. Plus they added some really good new franchises like Animal Crossing and the GODLY Pikmin 2. I welcome their attempts to make a kickass new version of Pilotwings, most likely on the Rev!

The SNES Pilotwings was brilliant. N64 one was ok.

Pilotwings was better on PS2 when it was called Sky Odyssey.

It's a GREAT game, but Pilotwings is a bit different ;)

Btw, GC needed a Pilotwings U_U

Flying around in the gyrocopter in Pilotwings 64 was so damn fun. I would do that for hours and hours. My neighbor and I would come up with our own games just for the gyrocopter. We would practice all sorts of stunts (high speed dives under bridges, flying through the grand canyon, etc.) and see who could pull off touching the ground or a building at high speed without losing control and crashing.

God I love that game.

Pilotwings was great. We all love physics-based gameplay nowadays right? RIGHT?

To me, pilotwings was a continuation of games like lunar landar and gravitar. Simple to play but with a very 'analog' control, even just using buttons.

N64 was more ethereal, but still had the main feel (and its worth it just to hangglide down the mountain)

IMHO, Pilotwings 64 shat all over the original. The game was so relaxing. I loved just flying around and viewing the scenery.

Well, just because Nintendo isn't willing to remake the same shit verbatim every year just to please their core fanbase instead of attract new customers (although they technically do) doesn't mean that they've "ruined" their games. "Underwhelmed their customers," maybe, but certainly not made to the point where one would want to throw up every time Cube is powered up. Besides, if you just wanted stuff that was like the originals...why not go play the originals and not the sequels/remakes (which logically tend to be changed in certain areas?)

I doubt he wants to play the same old games. Just games of equal quality that's all.
But maybe is perception and tastes changed over time too.
(thought i also feel Nintendo games vs the rest = it was better before)

this is the very reason why I bought an import Japanese Nintendo 64 in August 1996 - I couldn't wait to have PilotWings 64 at home.

this from a non-Nintendo fan, someone who never had an NES.

Pilotwings 64 was made by Paradigm Entertainment. Seems they went from 2nd party to 3rd party? So how can Nintendo now get a game called Pilotwings on the Rev if it doesn't actually belong to them?

Pilotwings started on the SNES, it's a Nintendo property.

Paradigm developing the N64 one is no different to Sega doing F-Zero, or Namco doing Starfox, they are still Nintendo's games.

Good.

I want Pilotwings Revolution since I didn't play the N64 version, even though I used to have an N64.

OMG, Pilotwings + Gyros would be awesome...

Pilotwings fans should check out this game if they haven't played it:

Haha, I just did that training mission. Used my l33t Pilotwings skill to get 100 my second try.

It would have been cool if there was targets to find in SA. Like when you see a parachute pick-up it means there's targets near. You could also do it again to your liking for best scores.
