Okay, she came of as "having a lack of self-awareness, using very black-and-white language, seemed very aggressive, and lacking in subtlety, relateability, or likeability due to those things."

No.
This movie shouldn't handle the topic with kid gloves nor tip-toe around the issues. It has to be strong and deliberate (without wiggle room for misinterpretation) to drive the message home to a thick-skulled audience that's largely ignorant and acts too sensitive to discuss race in America. There's no point in having the script be soft, subtle and polite for your fragile sensibilities.
