So did a new line of players that could have rocked just about any mp3 out there.

=(

They just didn't get it from a design POV. You have sleek slender Apple products that are dominating. Even though the Rio was thin, the cookie design just didn't work. For whatever reason its just not pleasing to look at and they stuck with it.

Oh god...what... what about my REBATE?!!? I just bought a Rio Carbon and sent the rebate a few days back. I am not getting that $20 back am I?

I almost bought a Rio player for my little sister today...i went with the shuffle instead.

*pat on the back to myself

Guess this means I won't ever get that remote for my Karma. :( Seriously, the Karma is one of the most underrated MP3 players ever released. Tons of features, but the market is just dominated by Apple, with Creative and iRiver cleaning up the scraps.

I remember my brother buying Rio mp3 players five or six years back. Heard they were great. But unfortunately, many people do care about style, and the iPod wins that battle.

The Rio Carbon was selling pretty nicely here up in Canada, but I guess if you don't have a piece of the pie in the US, then nowhere else really matters.

That sucks. Even though I'd never buy a Rio, less competition is bad.

The parent company is still alive and kicking, just not making Rio branded MP3 players any more. I'm sure they'll still honor the rebates until they expire.

Does this means stores are going to cut Rio prices? If they had a 50% off sale or something nice like that I might get a Rio and get the store warranty.

The parent company is D&M, who makes and owns the Denon and Marantz brands. They are also in the process of buying Boston Acoustics.. They aren't going anywhere for a LOOONGG while. They have said they will continue to provide support for the RIO at the retailer and consumer end.

so I imagine you will still get your rebate. :P

That fucking sucks.

I have a rio carbon, and think it is perfect. Such a fantastic device that does its job well.

I have a Rio Sport 128 flash player. I got a 256 MB flash card for it, and the player fried it when I tried to add over 128 MBs to it.

But otherwise, I couldn't complain. Ran for 50 hours on one AAA battery.

My first discman ever was a Rio... it was an MP3 discman too. Thought it was the hottest shit ever. Then, of course, I got a new job... and an iPod. I'll always have a place in my heart for that ugly, ugly, but oh-so-sweet (for its time) mp3 discman...

Edit - Well, shit. I THINK it was a Rio, anyway...
