The Story

Penned by the successful author of Kimi ga Nozumu Eien (well-known as Rumbling Hearts or “Kiminozo”), Koki Yoshimune, the Muv-Luv series started as a high school romance Visual Novel game in 2003 but quickly evolved into an epic science fiction based saga featuring an alternate world, giant aliens, mecha robots, and a complex cast of characters.

Selling more than half a million units since release in Japan alone, The Muv-Luv series has successfully made the transition to anime and manga, even spawning the “Moe Military” trend which is still raging in Japan. With over 3 million individual figurines, robot hobby models, and anime/manga sold; Muv-Luv is a force to be reckoned with and has influenced a huge number of individuals all over the world including prominent artists and creators!

This Kickstarter will focus on the localization and PC/Steam release of the first two titles in the series: Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative.

Muv-Luv (2003)

The first game contains parts one and two of the trilogy: Muv-Luv【Extra】 and Muv-Luv【Unlimited】.

Muv-Luv【Extra】

Shirogane Takeru was living a peaceful life as a 3rd year high school student with his childhood friend Kagami Sumika. However, one morning Takeru awakens to see a mysterious girl named Mitsurugi Meiya sleeping in his bed.

Thus begins the start of a high school love comedy where Takeru will have to choose between his childhood friend and the girl insisting they are bonded by fate.

Note: Despite the "Extra" in the title, this is the start of the trilogy. Read it first!

Muv-Luv 【Unlimited】

Shirogane Takeru finds himself stuck in a parallel world where mankind is on the brink of extinction after battling against alien invaders known as the BETA for the last 20 years.

Takeru soon finds himself enrolled into the United Nations 11th Force to fight these aliens. In this strange world he finds parallel versions of all of his high school friends, with one exception: Kagami Sumika, who does not seem to exist.

Soon he will have to fight to save mankind and protect the girl he comes to love over the course of the story.

Muv-Luv Alternative (2006)

The second Muv-Luv game is a direct sequel to Muv-Luv Unlimited and the conclusion to the Muv-Luv trilogy. One of the most highly acclaimed Visual Novels of all time, Muv-Luv Alternative is the #1-ranked Visual Novel on VNDB.

Three years after witnessing the tragic exodus of mankind, Takeru wakes up believing that everything that had happened was just a dream.

The brief hope that he has at last come back to his world is dashed away as soon as he discovers that he is once more trapped in the parallel world of Unlimited.

Restarting on that fateful day he first came here, will Takeru manage to use his knowledge of previous events to change mankind’s tragic future?

Considered one of the best visual novels ever, this is one of the last visual novels to get localized and released in the West.

Playing Visual Novels on the Vita is an absolute pleasure. I'll be sure to check this game out if the stretch goal is reached.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
The fact that this is already past $200,000 is startling.

Really cool to see even a super niche genre like this get support.

This was written by the author of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien?
Mitsuki all the way.

Will be curious to see how much it makes. It's already at over 200K with 39 days to go.

Hopefully since this isn't Sekai Project, they'll actually deliver the Vita and Android ports if the stretch goal is reached.

Well, Muv-Luv Alternative is one of the highest rated VNs of all time.

One of the cool little asides I noticed:

Our main focus is to provide a polished, high quality, English release of Muv-Luv (Extra and Unlimited) and Muv-Luv Alternative for the PC. This will include:

The latest and most up-to-date HD graphics available. We'll be using assets not only from the PS3 version of Muv-Luv (Extra + Unlimited) and Muv-Luv Alternative (including Takeru's voice) but updated stuff directly from âge-soft.
An updated game engine to ensure full compatibility with Windows 7, 8, and 10. (The current version only supports Win XP and 7)
Updated User Interface, Options, and Menus. Additional enhanced functions never before seen in any version of Muv-Luv (Extra + Unlimited) and Muv-Luv Alternative.

The fact that age is sending them new stuff we haven't seen before is awesome.

I was waiting for this kickstarter to finally start. I gave it my contribution.
It will be interesting to see where the numbers will stop at the end of the first day, as they are close to the goal already.

I heard Muv Luv isnt good. But I heard Muv Luv Alternative is amazing. Cant wait.

The original game is a painfully bog-standard harem visual novel. Near the end, a very interesting 'scientific' theory is discussed by a side character and then laughed off.

^^The above theory turns out to be completely accurate, and serves as the base for the two "sequels", and those are the superb stories. Alternative especially (the final one) is jaw dropping.

edit: holy crap its at 200k already. VN thirst is real.

The first game also has the best cameo driver ever.

second and third game. first game is your ... well dating sim with plot(both plots)

Do we actually have a picture of what it looks like, the image i saw looks like another image from a cg collection i've seen... <_<"

Second and third. Note: there are some crazy callbacks to the first game that will blow your mind if you play all three. Do it.

Cool, I'll probably back when it gets closer to the Vita goal.

They've run out slots in some of the higher tiers so that's probably slowing it down a bit, but it will make 250k pretty soon.

So is this all waifu nonsense or does it any hype moments with the robots and BETAs?
You have absolutely no idea how many 'hype moments with the robots' there actually are.

I've heard Muv-Luv Alternative compared to a hybrid of Starship Troopers and Gundam and it wouldn't even been inaccurate.

I've seen people who say they love all three. :p

I'm just saying what to expect for someone who might not like waifu stuff, I personally love this trilogy (I wish we would get a muv luv game that lets us control the robots... or a Super robot taisen entry would be nice)

Well, some of the story elements in Alternative really made people love the first game that much more, because a lot, and I mean a lot, of stuff people glanced over or thought was flavor or just random shit happening in the background (or bits of dialogue that happened that made you go "What?" a bit) actually meant something.

I know. :p

Honestly, I think you'll enjoy Extra a lot more if you go in not expecting anything absolutely amazing.

The original Muv-luv is the most mind numbing tripe I've ever had to drudge through. Shit was puerile, you can't even watch a let's play since it moves slower than playing yourself. Imagine every anime sterotype actualized Into a girl then you have your cast. Imagine a middle schooler's play on edgy jokes, then you have your MC. Damn. That was bad. Like, Valvrave bad. CrossAnge bad.

Alternative is okay though.

Edit: I'll agree it was necessary for Alternative, still doesn't make it better.

Yes. I absolutely love Extra in restrospect.

I mean, you can say "Alternative is the best" all day long, but it doesn't work at all without Extra and Unlimited.

Alternative with all its mech stuff makes me hope we can get the other really big mech VNs. I'm of course, talking about GIGA's Baldr Sky series. One can only dream. :( My avatar in fact, is from that series. :p

A close friend of mine really loves Soukou Akki Muramasa and Baldr Sky.

His knowledge of Japanese means he lords it over me that they're even better than MLA.

I have BS1 and 2. I got part way through BS1 with machine translation, and I was enjoying it, but for some reason stopped. Anyways, as evidenced by the fact my avatar is a Baldr Sky character, I'm a pretty big fan myself.

This looks like it'll hit the stretch goal for Vita and Android in which case I'll back to get a copy on Vita.
Part of me wants to succumb and go in for that $150 PC Collector's Edition though.

Android is the perfect platform for traditional VNs, I would read dozens of them if they existed on the platform.
