Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film, Amazon MGM Studios has announced. Villeneuve will also serve as executive Producer, alongside Tanya Lapointe.

As previously announced, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers.

"Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since 'Dr. No' with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory," Villeneuve said. "I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust."

Sounds like a great fit. Coming of Dune, his hype is strong, and I like the new Blade Runner as well. And Arrival is one of the best alien movies out there.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this news. Denis is my favorite director and I was hoping he would shift his focus away from big budget movies for a while.

Whoa.

I think it's great that there's a director with his level of skill and talent doing these big crowd-pleasing movies. I would've never guessed he'd direct a Bond movie, but I'm all for it.

Hmm. I wouldn't have picked Villeneuve, myself. Not sure his understated tones make for a good rollercoaster. With that said, happy to be wrong - and it'll look gorgeous in any case.

I want him to do dune films for the rest of his life.
The second one was so stupid.

How do the freemen survive in those huge groups? how did everyone ride the worms on mass? why are the harkonnen suddenly braindead and walk into traps non-stop? why couldn't the forces of the emperor and the harkonnen detect the entire army of the freemen over the hill? how do they ride worms in sync?

He's one of the best directors but definitely not the best fit for a James Bond movie.
He might be if they're going for the pre-Brosnan style of Bond. Less action, more spy. Slower paced, long buildup, good dialogue with visual splendor.

Dune Part 2 was one of the most underwhelming sequels ever. Not sure if I will watch the third one.

For that part yes, but I can't imagine him making a classic cheeky James Bond (meaning a real James Bond, not the last one). Denis Villeneuve is very much like Nolan, most of his characters are extremely cold and serious. Precisely, the last thing close to a classic bond movie was Tenet. Denzel Washington's son would be great in that role if he were british.

I hope this means Amazon learning something from the disaster of Rings of Power and will actually try not to run a venerable 70 years old franchise straight into the ground

First one too. Problem is Dune is unfilmable, Villeneuve's attempt is a mockery of what the source material is. Even the Lynch version is better considering all its flaws (spacediver version is good enough).

I like Villeneuve, Sicario and Blade Runner are great. Bond can be interesting, we'll see.

I love him, but can we please let him do original work instead of being beholden to established IP? Two Dunes, Blade Runner and now Bond.

I want another Prisoners, Sicario and Arrival

I'm for giving him a chance. I respect the people that enjoyed the Craig era bond, but it wasn't for me. The slow burn espionage stuff was frankly kinda boring compared to previous era's bond movies. I think the problem is that most of the gadgets and spy gear that Bond used to lean on as a light sci-fi element is now mostly reality. Drones, tiny cameras, pen tasers, etc all exist in the real world now, so where do you go from there?

I'll admit though, I'm not a Bond purist, I just enjoyed the spectacle movies and the power fantasy part of it. Hopefully at least Villeneuve won't assassinate Bond's character and traits, just prop up another girlboss.

I don't want someone to emulate old bond Sean Connery bond, the same way I wouldn't want someone to emulate Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig. It would be like asking Ryan Gosling to emulate Harrison Ford in a Blade Runner sequel.

Each Bond brings their own blend of personality and bravado to the mix, and I expect no different of a new Bond for this decade.

Probably a 007 tv show on the horizon they tried the tv show with Bourne (tread stone) I remember thinking it was good but it was considered a failure

I don't like spy movies and didn't like the first Dune (so I didn't watch the second one), so I don't really care.

But I really liked Arrival, so I would have prefer if he did something not from a huge IP.

Holy Shit this is a megaton.

That 007 game if its good and this which will be good will have this franchise bigger than ever

No doubt it will be visually spectacular, but given his track record, it will be a slow, ponderous wordy film that critics will love but I will think, like all of his previous films, is just..meh!

I really hope he can still make the Rama movie. I'd prefer it over a new Bond movie from him. Not that I don't want to see Bond from him, but Rama would be a much more unique experience. Though he's going to be R I C H after the Bond gig considering how much money Amazon has thrown around on it already.

Solid choice, but the guy who hates to cast British actors picks up the quintessential British franchise? 'It's pronounced Bon'.

Was hoping for something more along the lines of Arrival, which is one of his greatest movies, and just more scifi really.

Wish they gave him the keys to Star Trek too.
