Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Man, the final boss from this Alpha is so damn hard... (I think he's the final boss? the floating thing)

He's easy providing you don't stand out in the open. I always stay in the hallway just before the opening where he's based. That way I can take potshots at the boss and hide behind a wall as well as cover the entrances of regular enemies. Works wonders for me as I've yet to die in multiple Strike runs.

It's actually the first main segment that troubles me the most where enemies come from many angles while you're waiting for Ghost to take down the barriers. I have to sprint around to ensure that all the enemies are in one direction rather than all around me. Must look like I'm legging it to my allies. :lol

I know we're all focusing on the PVE (me too, I like what's been outlined so far in this regard), but anyone really worried about how competitive PVP will turn out? Honestly, I think that in its current state, it ranks amongst the worst multiplayer FPS I've played. I want to see huge improvements by the final release.

- You are fundamentally inaccurate in the air for whatever awful reason, forcing you to stay on the ground unless you have a grenade or super ready.

- Doing this exposes you to the grenades and supers in this game (unless you have incredibly good prediction and want the enemy to get a huge shot lead on you), which determine the outcome of 80% of the fights because of their huge range and damage.

- It's not like you can escape anyway because of the heavy linearization of the maps featured, bolstered by the poor choice of Domination as a gametype (and also by the fact that you have to be ridiculously close to domination points to capture them).

- If you are teamed up on, you're absolutely done for. There are almost no tactics you can use to macromanage except have a charged super move or grenade ready, which are no guarantee of your safety anyway.

- Generally, most of the fights are determined before they start. If you're at the objective (or really, anywhere near the middle of a map) and a guy comes around the corner with a super / grenade, there is no way in hell that you're surviving because the required reaction time would only result from an incredible amount of prediction...

- ...and prediction is unreliable in this game because no one communicates and the radar, which disappears upon ADS for some inexplicable reason, is ridiculously general about your opponent's location!

- Also, your sensitivity is reduced while sprinting.

There's also something that kills in one hit that I haven't been able to identify, but I won't list that as a criticism because I don't understand it at all.

Am I just insanely bad at this game even though I'm generally pretty good at FPSes? Is there some game mechanic that I'm just not getting sans the OHK weapon, or am I correct in thinking that the PVP needs serious improvement? Please discuss this with me.

I'm right there with you. Also would like to add besides my other post is that grenade physics feel weird to me and have small range. Is it me or are grenade arcs not that great? Might just be me

I would have to agree. I tried 2 pvp games and got pwd. Didn't have adequate weapons to even be competitive. Beta should be solid. Shall see. Later. PSN: NowhereFaded

Yeah, overall its okay for an alpha but its obvious that its alpha. I have faith in the final product. I need to not use a scout rifle in pvp because it just doesnt work.

For anyone in general, my psn is the same as my username here: tempest3

PvP is shit. Th netcode/hit detection is horrible in a 6vs6 enviroment. And special attacks arent skill based at all. I like the map design so far, thogh.

Some uncommon (green) armor have grenade abilities. I have a helmet that increases my grenade throw range.

The turrets are pretty nuts. I've gone on long kill streaks using them and never got killed, I just got bored and hopped off it after a while.

Could be because I was still level 5 and my teammates level 6, but we got killed a bunch of times, even if we tried to hide as much as possible.

The PvP needs a ton of work.

No good PvP mode could ever sprout from having 2 super powered area of effect abilities on huge cooldowns. There's as little skill in using them as there is in every failed attempt to not die to them. If you have them up, you're powerful. If they're on cooldown, you're instantly boned vs someone who has them up.

I love the fact that the PvP is integrated into your character's progression--the elements of PvP external to the PvP game play itself are awesome, but the overall feel, balance and tuning of the PvP gameplay itself is horrendous. There's a reason we don't see PvP modes in games like Mass Effect; these ridiculously powered abilities make for uncompelling gameplay in a PvP setting.

I hope they can tune it so that you can still bring your weapons and load outs from PvE, but make the gameplay itself not based around long, powerful cooldowns and twitch aiming.

My easiest suggestion would to be to just give everyone a lot more health and make supers far less deadly.

Seems the whole 60fps debacle isn't a crazy problem for Destiny. Anyhow, its good to see people enjoying it for how it plays, rather than completely writing it off via its frame rate.

I went from "Yeah... I'll get it day one and play it I guess" too, "God damn I can't wait for the beta and full release".

PVP is unbalanced as hell. Poor hit detection is huuuuuuge no no for me. I need solid visual and audio feed back too. Sparks, blood, moans groans, whatever. Gears spoiled me with this stuff. Hell, sometimes the lighting and the environmental effects are bit too much and are at times distracting. Tone it down.

PVE is fantastic. I hope there are a shit load of places to explore and bosses to kill. Quest, loot and instant variety is a given too.

I wonder what the 4th race is going to be!

Its 30fps. And 1080p. But is it just me or does Destiny look a little bit bad to me?

Doesn't look really next gen. I know its a cross gen game. But doesn't look that impressive on PS4.

If they want to take hints from their past games, they can treat heavy weapon ammo like power weapons and orbs of light like ammo for the supers. put the crates in key locations on the map so that players have to move there to use them.

The biggest issue for me with PvP right now is that there are people running around with more armor than everyone else. Even with the abundance of super abilities, the kill times have been fairly consistent and I rarely feel like I've been cheated out of an encounter... until I meet someone with literally twice as much health as me. It's stupid.

I agree with an earlier comment about the shooting mechanics. You should be accurate at all times and ADS should only be moreso for longer ranges. Again, I don't want to keep referencing Halo, but the things that worked with those games should be universal for shooters IMO. One of them is retaining accuracy while moving so that encounters don't turn into crawls. Because what's the point of all this mobility if we can't make use of it?

Not sure how I feel about the game, though to be fair, most complaints I have can probably be due to the fact that it's an alpha.

  • Exploration mode seems too empty; though I'm guessing that's because they just haven't populated the rest of the area yet
  • Was hoping there'd be more randomness to exploration, but it seems everything's identical each time you start a new exploration section. I'd at least expect the enemy spawns to be shuffled around a bit
  • Overall, I was expecting to actually find things in exploration mode, but there didn't seem to be anything to find.
  • Had trouble bothering doing anything "endgame" (level 8) once I beat everything, though that was probably more due to the fact that every drop you get is for level > 8.
  • Bosses have WAY too much health, and there doesn't seem to be any reason or reward for killing them
  • I really hope that the "check bungie.net" thing is a placeholder. Having to check a website for any sort of basic progress on my game is just complete bullshit.

I did have fun playing it, and I'm definitely not turned off to the game, but it on the same token I'm having trouble having any enthusiasm to continue playing now that I've hit level 8.

The sky and stuff looks pretty great, but some of the ground textures were super bad.

Looks like male and female characters sit differently. Which I like. I wonder if it changes with class or species. I like the way my human female sits though. Took a screenshot with it and the moon in the background while on the tower

Went through the opening area to the tower and then went back in to try it on Legend. Was kind of disappointed to find that doesn't get you any special loot or anything, especially soloing it. Got me to level 6 though, so that's something.

I'm not very interested in phat loot or player interaction, but the exploration aspect of this game is intriguing... is it a fun world to trek through as a single player?

So I was hanging out near a crashed Hive ship with a buddy, where The Hive and The Fallen send small parties to attack each other now and then.. and I went around killing both types of enemies for awhile.. just messing around. Suddenly.. The Hive ship and the building it crashed into started pouring out tons of enemies. I was killing as fast as I could and started getting shot from behind.. The Fallen ALSO started sending out a ton of guys. Soon enough Yellow Hallowed Knights and Servitor Eye's started showing up everywhere. Lvl 4 at first but as time when out they got as high as lvl 6 or 7. They were pouring out so fast I didn't have time to collect any ammo. There were only two of us, so just as we ran out of ammo, they retreated and everything went back to normal. This was NOT a labeled Event. There was zero notification that any kind of Public Event was going on.

Craziest experience in Destiny yet. And the game hasn't even launched yet.

Man, I already fought this freaking boss in Mass Effect 2.

Mhm. Those are annoying. Assuming you're referencing the Fallen Servitors w/e they're actually called.

How do I submit a video to Bungie? I found a glitch with a door severely cutting the LOD outside as I moved up and away from it.

So I've spent a fair amount of playing this now and I have to say that I'm incredibly excited for the beta and the release. This game has been the only game I've played in the last while.

During free roam, I kind of got bored and thought that maybe I should just try to see how far I could go. I ended up going through the strike mission area in free roam, the E3 car area, and the unbeatable enemy cave. Honestly, when I approached this game as something that I should explore before feeling obligated to do the missions, I was so much more immersed in the environment and enemies. One of the best parts for me was seeing the Hive and the Fallen fight each other.

The crucible is enjoyable, although it needs some balancing overall. Especially in turret placement on the moon level. That's really the only complaint I have, as this is an Alpha and most have the other smaller issues have been discussed here in detail by others. I look forward to more. :)

It really only takes a couple hours to reach the level cap and do everything you can do in the alpha. More time if you want to play as the different classes.

I figured as much. Is there only one area to explore? Old Russia...? I read somewhere some ppl talking about Chicago or something.

Had two codes, redeemed one via the PSN site and gave the other away. Finally got home to try the alpha andi can't download it from my library :(

Anyone know a fix?

Edit: went to my download list on the PSN site and was able to start the remote download.

Just played this in PvE for few hours or so.

All of my fears about the game have been quelled. So so so good. Everything feels great, smooth, intuitive, and I was so immersed through it all. I got a good feel for the weapon types, the mission system, navigating, and figuring out the enemy hierarchy + how the respawn.

Thinking about switching to digital so I can preload. :D
