Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I've sunk so much time into the alpha already. I know I'm going to sink far more into the beta. I fear for my social life and other responsibilities when the full game comes out. I love everything about this.

Weird how many people are throwing comparisons to so many games around saying how close Destiny is to them, but how relatively few are to Borderlands. Halo and Borderlands are by far the biggest influences on Destiny, IMO.

Not sure how you could say anything covers the comparisons more than those two, if you've watched a vid of the cell-shaded online co-op centric loot shooter sci Fi Borderlands and the aesthetic of Halo in the evolved Reach form.

Um, is another devil tank supposed to spawn on the first one after you defeated it? I called it after that bullshit.
In Devils' Lair? No. lol
I really, really, really wish Bungie would give an option to turn off the music. It's 2014 guys- go ahead and give the option!
I just wish I could turn the game's sound down a little. I like to run the audio through my IEMs w/ microphone, and I can't hear jack-shit from my fireteam in battle (and half of the time out of battle.)

The vibe I get is Halo Reach + Diablo 3 + Journey.
Yeah, see the thing is, Diablo already influenced an FPS and it was a big deal in the form of Borderlands. Logically, an FPS made after can be compared to borderlands and Diablo, but it's pretty obvious that with the timing, genre, and platform of developer focus, Borderlands looks and plays way closer to Destiny.

And Journey feels like a stretch to me in that Destiny has an atmospheric nature that could link it with Journey, but it's atmospheric nature is mirrored far more clearly, among other things, in how many design choices are featured and evolved to stellar representation in Halo Reach.

It just seems really clear to me where you will find the biggest and most likely contributors to Destiny's presentation and features if you look at Bungie and the time at which this game has been developed in the industry.

Hey, If psychoraven or anyone who knows him is online, can you ask him to make a second chapter to the DestinyGAF clan? apparently its maxed out at 600 members according to people trying to join

anyone wanna play right now? want to go on another strike run in legend mode. already have a second member just need a third for our fireteam.

Well, I've been playing since last night. It's fun, but I'm mostly just spending my time trying to jump to weird places in the Tower. So far I've gotten on top of the postmaster, climbed the tree by the gunsmith and gotten halfway up the bookshelf next to the big gyroscope.

This is like WoW all over again.

EDIT: Also, I found a soccer ball you can kick around with other people. It's by the crates under the stairs above the entrance to the tower north hallway.

The special skill cooldown needs to be halved, at the very least. It's practically useless as it stands because it's never ready.

Gear reduces cool down times dramatically. It doesn't need to be changed.

As for the Super, there is a mechanic called Orbs of Light which whenever any ally in your fire team gets a kill with their super, they drop orbs of light for their party members which speeds up the super time significantly.

I do hope whatever this centipede error is gets sorted out tomorrow as I'd like to play a bit more before the alpha ends - without making yet another new character(I've done this numerous times already, but hey at least then I was able to transfer my guns etc).

As it is, I can't access the game on my primary account but can on any other, which makes the idea of it just being a connection error very unlikely. At least there are plenty of people unaffected and it's being encountered now x.x Hopefully this won't happen at release, preferably not at beta either haha. I know I'd be quite upset if I bought the game and was, seemingly arbitrarily, being refused access all of a sudden x.x

I could just be an idiot and didn't look, but is MP and that SP mission you start with actually with other PSN users, and not bots/NPCs?

So I was finally able to tear myself away from this game to post some impressions.

This game is an absolute blast. I was cautiously optimistic about this game leading up to E3 simply because, like most people, I had no idea what this game was really about. But boy did this Alpha change that. I've spent so much time just exploring around Old Russia, looking for every little cave and building just trying to map it all out.

I was pretty worried about the PvP as well, but I've really enjoyed my time with it. It seems fairly balanced thankfully they normalize stats.

Though the game isn't without it's faults.

- Loot frequency: While I don't want it to be D3 levels, it would be nice if they bumped up the frequency you find engrams/items while out exploring a little bit. I leveled two characters to 8, a Warlock and a Titan. On my Warlock I didn't have a huge amount of trouble finding gear, mainly because I got lucky at the Gunsmith and my Warlock vendor, but on my Titan I couldn't find a good uncommon weapon for the life of me. It made trying to do the Strike a nightmare. Also it'd be nice if they increased the chances of loot in the Crucible, you can go a dozen or more games without getting anything worthwhile.

- Devil's Lair: I really enjoyed the Strike, it was pretty challenging and had some interesting encounters. But why don't the "bosses" drop loot themselves? Spending 20+ minutes on the Scarab Walker just to get nothing is a bit disappointing. It would go a long way to making those challenges more rewarding.

- Public Events: Do these even exist? I found maybe 2 exploring around on both characters. Feel they could happen a bit more often.

- Loot Chests: These things need a marker or waypoint when you get close to them.

Pretty simple stuff that they could fix fairly quickly. I'm super excited for this game, it's nice to have something to look forward to on my PS4 rather than it gathering dust or being used as my Netflix box.

How are you guys maxing out your armor btw? I think I did it once but I forgot how.

Why would you ever want to turn of the beautiful music

The music everywhere except the strikes and boss battles is awesome. For those places, it's overbearing and gets repetitive fast. Marty's always stuck some coal in a pile of gems, and Destiny seems to be no different.

But the highs are really high. There are two tracks that play - one in the tower and one in Old Russia - that I'm itching to put on my iPod.

Played through all the modes in Alpha up to level 6 and am not feeling the game.

In single-player, the land is barren and desolate with a few waves of the same enemies. Not sure if level 3 is an indication of how the game is but with the integration of random encounters and events it seems like the story will be thin and enemies will attack in inconsistent massive waves.

I enjoyed the explore mode to gather items in a free range mode, but it just wasn't exciting.

Control multiplayer mode was OK. Vehicles are fun with typical Halo action, but there were a few users that just dominated on bikes and turrets. Using the third-person special attacks were a nice addition as an optional way to escape.

From there I thought co-op multiplayer was the way to go. Strike missions do this well with three-player matchmaking, but the battles were just repetitive survival mode grinding with the same soldiers, knights, and warlocks respawning like crazy. Liked when the giant tank dropped in but the respawns and shield sponges just made it feel like a time waster.

My gawd. I've been enjoying my time with the Alpha but tonight was just freaking awesome! Everything just 'clicked'. Figuring out which weapons and gear can be upgraded and then getting those upgrades like an ACOG sight for my rifle or increasing the damage. 2 of us decided to go and take on the Spider Tank with our new toys and abilities and half of it's health was dropped by 14 shots from the sniper rifles and then the rest of it was dispatched in a couple of minutes.

My Warlock when I started...

And how he is now..

Finished the night by almost being a Vanguard lvl. 1 and the Vortex unlocked for my Nova Bomb. When my buddies got offline I stayed on for a few and after emerging from underneath a ship near the boatyard and I got caught in a fucking HUGE battle between the Fallen and Hive. lol I managed to go quite a while solo but got finished off by the multiple witches and then after the 4th respawn they all dispersed save the few Hive and Fallen that are supposed to spawn in the area. Pretty sure I captured it all on video too.

Honestly, I'm having more fun just playing the Alpha now than I've had recently playing the likes of Battlefield 4 or the Hardline beta. And I haven't even touched the Crucible yet.

The Tower's music is absolutely lovely. I'm really glad that the place we'll be spending so much time in over the course of the game has such good music.

This is one of those games where I can actually play by myself and enjoy it. Chatting with a coordinated team is great of course, but sometimes I just want to chill on my own and run around a game. This one supports that perfectly with the seamless matchmaking. It's not too lonely, but the presence of other players is not overbearing either.

A comment from an earlier page said it best. The game really has a "dreamlike" feeling going for it. They need to put a bit more life into it, but I'm really liking where the atmosphere and overall theme is going.

Ha found out how to get to the Devil Tank or whatever it's called and killed it solo. Only died twice in the process! Where's my damn medal!

September seems so far away. I wonder if I could bribe Bungie with 60$ and just let me stay in beta till release. I will be your guinea pig Bungie, just don't cut me off !

I wouldn't mind additional skills, particularly for PvE. Maybe some CC or other offensive / defensive cooldowns to add some additional layers of strategy. Then maybe have the option in the Crucible to have matches with special skills disabled, for those that aren't fans of having the skills in PvP. I don't necessarily mind them, but it seems quite a few people do.

The "alpha" killed a lot of my interest in the game. I'll probably pick it up, but this isn't at all the kind of game I was looking for.

The "open world" part is just a larger level with respawning collect/kill quests. The whole world felt really lifeless. Unless the gameplay present isn't representative of the end product at all (highly unlikely), then I feel it's going to get boring really fast. I was going into Destiny as a PVE game primarily, since I have no interest in competitive console shooters. It looks like this game is going to be PVP first with some barebones PVE grinding added on.

On the positive side, this game looks stunning. Absolutely stunning. The first words out of my mouth when I booted it up were, "this is next gen." The character creator is awful, but it's not too big of a deal (never depend on Bungie for human models). The lighting and skyboxes are breathtaking.

They are too proud to do that. Seriously.

This has bugged me for what, 13 years?

There's a workaround for their 360 games. Use the custom soundtrack feature. Aka play a song using the guide media player, pause it, and in Reach for example, you get sound effects and ambient noise only. Downside is, I believe it cuts dialogue too.

Yeah, the design of the map and the seamless player phasing strike a really nice balance where the game doesn't suffer from the "30 guys crowded around doing the same thing" you see in MMOs, but it also avoids feeling dead and lifeless, which can happen sometimes in single-player, open-world games. It's a lot of fun to see a lone person fighting off in the distance, run up to fight beside them, do a /dance or /wave and then be on your way.
I have a feeling this game is going to be huge
It will be quite the juggernaut once the Activision marketing machine kicks into high gear, I imagine.

Game breaking bug found! The soccer ball in the Tower loses its physics when too many people start trying to play with it. How's a man supposed to enjoy this game with a busted ball?? WTF Bungie

Anyone has a feeling that Titan is the most broken class in this game?

You just knife everything in PVE due to high armor, and then the skill tree emphasizing on melee is so good: Sprint charge, restore HP, AOE dmg, refresh Fist CD. You are LITERALLY a Juggernaut charging into battle.
For PVP, the high armor and one shot AOE special, yeah...about that.

Overall... Ain't nobody got time to aim and shoot! I am just going to put my fist in your face.

I am kinda getting that vibe too, hope the beta has a little more than kill X quests. I still had fun, but I think it will get old after awhile.

Character creator is bare bones, but honestly it isn't even necessary. How often do people go helmetless. You never see your character anyway.

I find them fine. They don't like my grenades much. And a good weapon will down anybdoy. (Ahem shotgun)

Halo + Borderlands = Preordered after 30 mins of playtime.

Both me and my wife thought the same thing.
That's the accurate description for what Destiny is. It's pretty obvious from how the guns work, to the cell shading influences, to the HUD and damage counters, to the co-op push, Borderlands clearly pointed the studio behind Halo in an altered direction.

I'm not sure how the other people phasing in and out help make the world lively. You can't interact at all unless both of you have a mic. You can't kill other people to compete. It's just kind of... pointless?

So far, when it comes to actually seeing other people running around playing, I will see either absolutely no one at all, or a crap ton of people. Especially at the Tower. Either packed or empty.

The knife is for the Hunter class, not the Titan
