Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Can't be alone on feeling that Explore is just a bit "empty". Hoping they give us more meaningful reasons to explore this seriously beautiful world in future releases.

No doubt. Explore mode is by far the most 'casual', dare I say boring aspect of the game. It is just like you said, lifeless and empty. The quests are quite honestly, horrid. The vast majority of them that I have encountered switch either from kill/collect, scan environment, or survey. Survey for what? Kill/Collect/Scan for what? They should lead to something. Even if it was scout area, scan environment, kill/collect that eventually led to a boss fight. Anything is better than what we currently have.

Second, the mode is about exploration but it doesn't feel rewarding at all. I'm just wandering aimlessly from one area to the next for no real reason. Chests normally just give some glimmer, which is kinda of sad.

I constantly go into caves, warehouses, sheds, etc. 90% of the time they are empty and lifeless. It is just a missed opportunity. I'm really hoping this is because it is Alpha.

As it stands I'm happy about the game but I have a bad feeling that I will just be replaying story missions, strikes, raids.

The classes are too similar in my opinion. Like.. why let everyone use all the weapons? Maybe the other subclasses change things up more..

So I have played all three classes at this point to level 8 and Hunter is easily the most fun in my opinion. The golden gun super may be the weakest out of the Gate but the upgrades look like they will make it better if you go gunslinger. The ability to toss a swarm grenade into a group have it damage all of them, toss a knife at a dude and then quickly mop up the rest with my pulse rifle is just a lot of fun. I like the double jump as it feels a lot more agile then the floatyNess of the Titans lift and the Warlocks hover, just makes them feel very slow in comparison. The hunters speed is a big plus over the other two, and I like the Hunters overall look the most with Titan being second, I hate the Warlocks dress.

Looking forward to seeing what the other two specs for Hunter offer, especially the Blade dancer, but it's pretty much my chosen role.

Also another fun aspect of the Swarm grenade is that it's useful for setting up traps in PvP throw one at a door and let them sit there while you cover the opposite entrance is pretty great and I have gotten some nice kills that way.

Man I just got shit on by somebody in DestinyGAF in MP, Foostah or something like that haha.

Struggling with the Scout Rifles in MP. They're my go to in SP but I feel like Auto's or Pulse Rifles maybe are the best bet in MP with how fast the kill times are.

Been quietly lurking on this thread during the course of the alpha and I'm really happy to see how many opinions have been turned by playing it.

The game has some tweaks to be made and it could do one or two things a bit better (all already mentioned by other fine Gaffers on here) but overall I'm massively happy and can't wait to dig into the beta and then the full game.

To be honest, I kinda hope there isn't much in the way of new stuff in the beta as I kinda want to experience it all fresh in the full release....my god, do I have the willpower to skip it?
Probably not.

Don't know if we're posting PSN IDs on here but mine is njd82, feel free to add, specifying its for future Fire Team endeavours and Crucible battles!

Roll on September 9th!

On twitter, Ninja said that Bungie is announcing a surprise Bungie event at 8 central tonight. Anyone know where he is getting this from?

I just went outside the wall, to the place where those rusty cars are piled up. There I sat down atop a small structure and just watched the sun go down.

Art, heart, soul. This game has them all. It kind of reminds me how I used to just drift away into the emptiness in EVE online. Explore mode is my fav so far.

I was there too. I was hoping that the invisible wall on the broken bridge is gone in the final game and we can travel down that road.

Just did the Strike mission on Legend difficulty...seemed to actually be easier than normal. huh.

Got a blue drop I can't use because the level cap :(

I found the SP tutorial interesting enough. The capture the node competitive not so much. I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into the PvE stuff.

I started playing this on Thursday and whilst I liked it at first I wasn't really sure what I thought of it. Come Sunday night now after maxing my Hunter class it's most definitely a day 1 preorder for me. It just gets better and better the more I delve into it. Did everything multiple times, the Strike on Brave and Legend difficulty 2 or 3 times each, multiple missions whilst exploring (do these even end ?) and a load of the multiplayer. If what I've read is true Bungie are not going for a lot of levels and at most 20 - 30 with the focus mostly being on the gear. I can see that in the upgrade system, it seems to me that the levels are for giving you an initial upgrade with all other upgrades in that tree earned by 'using' the power. (ie throwing/using grenades to unlock different types). What actually surprised me is how vertical the combat can be at times, with the double jump it's a blast running around the level getting into various scrapes.

Strikes on Legend difficulty are definitely something you need to be prepared for. Thankfully the times I played it was with all level 8s who had great weapons and knew what they were doing. It still wasn't easy but the cooperation between us was a great and the AI really fuckin brutal at times. Them stealth melee bastards are utter cunts, you really have to spot them as they go for you. Oh and also, to help you not run out of ammo I highly recommend buying ammo packs from the Gunsmith in the Tower before doing a Strike, it's handy :)

Multiplayer is a strange beast and whilst I'm really enjoying it I'm still not sure what to make of it. It's a middle road between Halo and Call Of Duty and a bit like both but yet not like either at the same time. The TTK is in the middle as well, if someone gets the drop on you then if you're quick you can still get away but at times you're still screwed. With the double jump, being able to use a speeder at anytime and having to actually collect ammo for your secondary/heavy weapons (instead of actual power weapons like Halo) it's a strange mix of a lot of things. I was definitely having a lot of fun with it though.

Son watching the tv....no problem ;)

It looks incredible on the Vita. I'd say its the best looking remote play game. Don't know why but Killzone and Infamous didn't look as cool on dat OLED.

I've got some great loot and engrams while in explore mode, mostly from downed enemies though. Chests are pretty much useless though, since they're just full of glimmer.

I'm going to delete it now, I've tried twice already... Hurry up September.

Bungie would do a special event right when the Game of Thrones finale is on haha. Damn it.

Also, I have to say remote play for this is great.

The presentation is beautiful. The music is really captivating as well.

I was sort of mesmerized watching the character animations during the character customization screen. The robots have all these subtle nuances going on, and the overall design asthetic is very reminiscent of Star Wars Ralph Mcquarrie. Which, you know...If you're going to crib from somewhere, that's one of the finest to have done it. But I found it a bit too reminiscent of Mcquarrie's style at times.

That said, congrats Destiny on the Halo?

I was pretty engaged in the single-player level (Old Russia) and found the Tower hub-world interesting albeit a bit overwhelming for my personal tastes. But honestly, the moment I got into that PvP skirmish I lost all interest. I loved Halo for years but I'm rather over it. Halo's DNA is firmly entrenched in Destiny. I'm just like...http://goo.gl/Edm5in

I kind of want speeder bike races now. I really like using the sparrow.

I was thinking the same thing. I'd love if they had races, problem is though is that I think they're all the same speed, unless you unlock some later on. But even then it could be fun if there were obstacles.

I love flying it, so much fun.

I agree, the world feels empty because there is not enough stuff to find in Exploration mode. You are scouting the ruins of a old civilization, there should be more items to find that relate to this golden era.

I bet they could make it work. Possibly standardize the bikes you are using. It would be good.

I thought speeder races were in? I swear I heard that.

I hope thats true. The sparrow is fun.

I don't think I'm going to participate in the Beta. The Alpha's already convinced me that I will be in on this day one and I don't want to spoil anything else. Only concern I have is how many weapon types will be in the full game. I'm hoping there's going to be a lot more than what's been revealed so far. I did have concerns about enemies being a bit too damage spongy but now I don't even mind. In fact I prefer it this way. I've run Devil's Lair four times and each time I completed it, my pulse was racing. If they do decide to nerf enemies, I hope it isn't too much.

Hell they could shift an entire lore mode into exploration if they wanted. Have codex's/ghosts whatever only appear in exploration mode. But the biggest issue is how utterly barren exploration mode is.

Public events that hardly ever spawn--not going to discuss the difficulty because I haven't seen one with an actual group.

Caves, warehouses, downed ships/airplanes, rusted out cars, basements (the ones in the rusted out shipyards). Nothing in them, just empty. Why? I descended into numerous caves and basements expecting some nasty mob. Nothing, no chests, no enemies at all.

I understand that they want exploration mode to be some kind of casual downtime activity, but as it stands it is something I would just avoid entirely.

Does anyone know anything about the "event" at 6PM PST? Are we supposed to be somewhere, or just playing? The tweet + facebook post about it were a bit vague.

the only thing I don't get about this game is letting you take your character into multiplayer. it seems really unbalanced

Agreed. I played the Crucible for the first time earlier and did not like it one bit. I was at level 6 and everyone was at level 8 and using shotguns.

My least fave part of the game easy. Then again, doubt I'll play that mode for long since I'd rather just play BF for competitive MP. Only concern is it seems some stuff like weapons and such require you to play the Crucible in order to even access them, right? I mean those medals and stuff.

Well if we are talking weapons I hope they give us alien weapons as well. Some enemies have a needler type gun that I want.

Feel that my time with the Alpha is coming to a close, but damn if it hasn't swayed me towards a hell of a lot of excitement for this game. It all comes together when you finally get hands on and I'm glad Bungie decided to let the fans in.

Posted this on alpha.bungie.net, but my biggest takeaway and point of feedback from the Alpha is Increasing Incentives in Exploration Mode

You know that area from the Old e3 gameplay demo? with that big Fallen guy that climbed out of that hole. One of the explorer missions gave me that guy as a kill mission and it was pretty sweet! he was no pushover!
