Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Just hit level 8 and this game is AMAZING. It's halo core mechanics in a MMO/PSO like world. Man the loot, skills, etc. It's so much more skills based then borderlands in the boss fights and scenarios. The ability to casually join in with friends or strangers is great too.

This game went from Luke warm before E3 to a must buy. And the game looks to be brimming with content. Tomorrow I'll try out the Pvp combat

I feel like we're playing exactly different games. I barely got any loot at all, and it was never exciting. The skills feel extremely limiting with one super, one melee, and one grenade. I had pretty much seen all the content within a couple of hours of playing. I have no idea how they plan to support this game every day for years.

I came away disappointed. Feels like a "no fun allowed" version of Borderlands with all the enjoyable and over-the-top aspects stripped away. Even Peter Dinklage sounds really bored.

My thoughts.
This game is fucking brilliant. The shooting feels great, the graphics are pretty damn good, and the art style is beautiful, and the music is more Marty O'Donnell excellence:(. I'm even enjoying the multiplayer, which didn't interest me much going in.
The only things I don't like are the accuracy penalty for jumping, and sometime enemy respawning can get a little wierd.

Now I can't wait for the Beta/ full release.

So after an hour of Destiny (which was after an hour of Hardline)...

It looks like a PS3 game at the moment. Bungie calls it an alpha which I'd agree with. The assets are pretty but the lighting seems a bit blown out and the sound rather flat. If I were to guess, Bungie branched this off a few months ago and had guys working in this demo separately from the main team who'd ideally be working in the main game. That's purely a guess from having worked on projects with E3 demos in the past.

That said, the single play part was a lot of fun. I played one round of multi and found it a bit standard. Maybe the map was a bit small. I don't want to say it was dull, just that it made me want to dust off Titanfall.

I will be buying it day one. It's lucky that it drops in September against little major competition. I do have faith in Bungie. I mean if anyone remembers the shitty showing of Halo:CE at E3 2001 compared to the game that shipped 5 months, they'll know minor miracles can happen.

Ah, so it is Peter Dinklage. Thought it was his voice.

Pretty sure one of the voices is Daniels from The Wire

Yep. Peter Stormare, too. Those two have super distinct voices.

I had pretty much forgotten that Peter Dinklage is actually american, so I didn't think it was him at first because I'm too used to his Game of Thrones accent.

OH heads up!

Go to alpha.bungie.net and you can read all the crazy lore that you've collected on the Grimoire cards!!!!

URK, I need this on the phone app!

Yeah what's the deal with this..I've been downloading for about 5 hrs now. I've never had anything download this slow before

im gonna keep reposting this if people dont bother to read...

For slow downloads try using google or open dns settings on your network connection: use 8.8.8.8 as primary dns and 8.8.4.4 as secondary. You can find this in settings->network connection. Select your connection and use manual settings. Use default/automatic for every screen and use those above settings when you get to DNS.

How long does the Installing Content take? I can't tell if I'm stuck here or it's supposed to take this long. I don't see a progress bar, just spinning circles.

Has anyone encountered any bugs yet because this seems like a very stable alpha so far.

I ran into one, where:

I was shooting an enemy with a shotgun, then started to reload. I reloaded only two slugs before firing again, then, after the shot, the gun went back into the reload animation, but, the left hand wasn't reloading the gun.

That's the only thing I've run into, though. And it was fixed by simply hitting reload, again.

Man I dunno if it's because I haven't played a console FPS in a while but holy hell am I having a hard time controlling this game, guess I have to tweak that sensitivity. I also wish you could turn off that aim-assist, other than that I think the game has a ton of potential. The multiplier didn't really grip me as much as I was thinking it would, but I think that may have been the map's fault as I didn't really like the layout and again, I was having personal control issues.

All in all this is a pretty rad alpha....seriously the game is out in a few months, how alpha can this be? :)

Guess who got a code tonight and tried entering it through SEN's site to have it not download to his system and have that count as using up the code?

This guy. Fuck. Everything.

Game is halo with a different campaign. Not a bad thing just not much new. Also has a cod feel in multi. I'll buy it day one.

Has several strong vibes for me, Halo, Borderlands, Mass Effect.

With more time in the world, I'm sure it'll blend into its own experience.

Go to the store, then view downloads.

I did the same thing, and, I had to download it from there.

How you get in the crucible? Its red on mine unless we need a full fireteam. All I know is day one. This looks beautiful for an alpha.

It's not automatic. Check "View Downloads" in the PS Store. Destiny Alpha will be on there. I did the same thing.

Excitement from the alpha will get people to preorder for the beta too. Brilliant strategy. So many opinions on this game have improved significantly since playing it.

I sure hope so because my whelm is currently undered from most of what I've seen. This download is taking ages....

Ok so I played it for about an hour and I like it a lot.

However.... anyway to get rid of the god awful vignetting that, to me, kinda ruins the way the game looks and gets in the way????

I really liking it so far. The UI is amazing. I also love exploring the world.

PvP is trash though. Can't believe it plays so poorly.

Very solid game overall and I'll definitely be picking it up.

I did that with Hardline, but found out if you go to the Store on the PS4 and go to Downloads you can download from there

I've been playing since 5pm. It is now almost 1am and I don't want to stop, but I have to.

I can't wait to see what the full game has in store for us. FOV still needs to be zoomed the flip out though.

Fucking amazing! You are a god.

Went from 7 hours to 38 minutes.

I love you.

Really wish this was 60fps on PS4, at least for The Crucible. Response just seems so sluggish, idk if that's due to the fps or just something with the game.

It should be on the download list in the SEN webstore. Otherwise, just go to your library on PS4

I was in the free roam area doing quests for like 2 hours before I realized it wasnt part of the progression.

Haha. Started thinking, man this is getting repetitive and taking a while.

The presentation is impeccable. Even seeing my username fade in on the character selection menu is impressive. Also, it's the first time someone makes me like flat design (I want some of these guys to make a computer OS). Bungie has some of the best designers in the industry.

This game looks very ambitious and next-gen. You can see where the money went.

Yeah I'm feeling the same. Playing with a friend right now. Feels like you run out of missions fast. All it is is analyzing stuff now. Running into areas with enemies that jump and fall in levels in between every area.

Just doesn't feel fun. And it feels like Bungie tried too hard with the UI and stuff. All the menus using that left thumbstick. Just disappointed in it so far. It sounded REALLY interesting. I guess I'll see if the beta gives me a better idea of how the game is really supposed to be. Just seems odd because I thought the first few Halo games were fun.

And yeah the skill tree seems really limited. Especially since it's picking for you as you level.

I wasn't psyched about PvP. Poor man's Halo in comparison. But yes, the real kicker of no 60 fps for competitive is just not going to fly.
