Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Please, Bungie, create a controller layout that doesnt require me to press in on a stick to run. And also let me turn the music off.

I am not loving it. If the alpha is supposed to be getting me hyped it's not working yet. To be fair though it haven't given it a lot of time yet.

Just cleared the Strike with two friends. Fucking fantastically fun. I love this game.

Edit: Let me also say that I generally dislike all first person shooters. The first and only true exceptions were Borderlands 1 and 2 and I'm very much liking what I'm seeing here [so far] much more.

Do your stats decay or something? Just noticed the 11 strength I had on a set of armor shrunk to 4. Anyone know what's going on here and if you can repair this?

Yeah, fuck that strike mission. Slogged through those bosses. Then we finally got to the sphere boss. We must have spent 20 minutes to get it to half health. Then we died. And sphere boss back to full health.

I turned off my ps4.

lol I actually like that, I came in thinking man this shit will be breeze then i died more often then anything else - i like dying and not being able to blaze through things but the enemy AI still could use some work.

Just hit level 8 and this game is AMAZING. It's halo core mechanics in a MMO/PSO like world. Man the loot, skills, etc. It's so much more skills based then borderlands in the boss fights and scenarios. The ability to casually join in with friends or strangers is great too.

This game went from Luke warm before E3 to a must buy. And the game looks to be brimming with content. Tomorrow I'll try out the Pvp combat

Am I doing something wrong? I beat the first level with the wizard and went back to the free roam and no loot whatsoever. The assault rifle is kind of boring.

Despite being very open and non-linear, Destiny still manages to provide great level design and interesting combat encounters.
The level design is impressive as hell. Each area is well thought out for combat and aethetics and this is just one region of one planet.

Okay, why are the super moves even a thing in competitive? It feels like it just gives everyone in the game a near risk free grav hammer or rocket launcher shot every X minutes.

For slow downloads try using google or open dns settings on your network connection: use 8.8.8.8 as primary dns and 8.8.4.4 as secondary. You can find this in settings->network connection. Select your connection and use manual settings. Use default/automatic for every screen and use those above settings when you get to DNS.

This is working! Thnx so much.

Jumped from 6hrs to 80min

Gotta say, none of Bungies previews or demos did anything for me before. But actually getting to play it, I can really see myself getting this.

I really dig the art direction, especially the skyboxes and backgrounds, seeing that huge orb over the panoramic city view was super impressive.

The gunplay is alright so far, feels like a more action like take on Halo's weapons. My only compliant so far is the loading times between worlds/the tower, and how so many things in the game harken back to Halo.

Anyway's, good impression so far.

OK first, when this Alpha ends I will be going into a deep shock coma.

Second, the Alpha was the smartest move any videogame company has made ever. This is all any of my friends are talking about, and the reception is universally positive to say the least.

Free roam exploration is the most exciting, chilling thing I've done in gaming in years.

Based Bungie Lords.

Go to your character screen you should have multiple primary and sub weapons. You can swap them mid mission.

Or go to the tower and buy new weapons.

The pattern is go first mission, go explore to level 6 then do the level 6 dungeon.

Fair point, though many people with PS4s/X1s are going to be turned off by previous gen visuals running at 30 frames. Just feels old - like playing BF4 on PS3 vs PS4.
Oh, sure, I agree with you on that.

Personally, I can say that Bungie has made some of the (IMO) best shooters of all time, but still, I know I would have enjoyed them even more if they were running at 60fps (that Master Chief Collection...) I would love it if they went for 60fps with Destiny, even if it was just for the PvP portion of the game, but alas, Bungie is gonna Bungie.

Agreed.

As I said earlier in the thread, I hope they include at least some of the classic Halo control schemes like Recon, classic Bumper Jumper, etc. Or better yet, fully customizable controls. In any case, every control scheme present in the Alpha is way too COD for my liking, that's for sure.

Excitement from the alpha will get people to preorder for the beta too. Brilliant strategy. So many opinions on this game have improved significantly since playing it.

Played about an hour and a half. Really liked what I played. I just wish this game was 60fps. It was instantaneously noticeable, especially since I had been playing the BF: Hardline beta before while it was downloading (which I know isn't solid 60, but still). Not nearly as smooth and the input lag. Still, the game very pretty, especially the lighting and particle effects, oh and the skyboxes of course.

The game definitely plays better than it looks to watch. It seems like this game kind of demos inconsistently. Sometimes it will look great, and other times it will seem completely dull. I don't think just watching gameplay demos do it justice. You definitely have to try it out for yourself to see if you like it.

So I have a question: Can you have more than 3-man squads? Because I saw viveks playing and when I went to see what he was doing, it said 1/6 players for his fireteam. Just wondering since Bungie was saying it was split into groups of three. So like if I wanted to do 4-player co-op with friends would that be possible?

And I see I wasn't the only one having issues with the download speeds. Usually I get 4-5 MB for PSN downloads, I was only getting 1-2 downloading Destiny. I'm going to assume it was because of high traffic volume.

Lots of fun, just don't know about the level stuff. First quest after getting back to Russia were people all my level, then the next one were people 4+ levels above me, basically impossible to kill solo :(

Game is great so far, but I have a few suggestions if any of the developers are reading this. If the full version doesn't have deeper character customization - at least for faces... it should. The males are really ugly. I'd like to make a non-ugly male. For now, I made a lady. Also, the social hub should have text chat available.

Played it last night. Was going to try some more this morning but the servers seem to be under a lot of stress. It's really addicting. Want to play more.

I've been playing it most of the morning. I gotta admit, I like it. I love the missions more than the PvP stuff.

Man, I just played with someone from a clan called DestinyGAF, going to suppose that's from here!

It is. I've seen them show on on a stream a couple of days ago.

Also, alpha is amazing.

The scenary is spectacular, the PvP is fun (especially on Rubble) and the weapons are great to use.

Destiny is amazing. The pvp multiplayer was slow goings for me until I got into a groove. The strike mission is where it's at though. Definitely day 1

One question folks, is Destiny a game that you can enjoy by yourself or is it entirely designed to be played with company?

I really like the game, I love all what I see and read, but I can't play it with a bunch of friends regularly, most of time I'll play it alone (online, but alone).

I play alone and when you do strikes it matches you. So it's fine.

I might be wrong but if you clear out an area and explore the surroundings the enemy AI suddenly respawns? it would be nice if they stayed dead. Another thing Bungie needs to work on is making the world feel alive.. at the moment its just completely dead.

Really needs 3rd person option for combat.

Lv cap at 8 in this Alpha kinda sucks though.
Try out another class, that's what I plan on doing once I cap out. I mean granted only so much you can see but still, September will be marvelous

But yeah, would like a locked 50 fps if they could, just a little higher please

Is the initial mission, the Explore mission, and the Strike mission the only content in the alpha? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
