Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Downloaded without any problem a couple of hours ago. Took around 8 minutes to download and install it. Can't complain about that speed!

Testing my connection, everything appears fine. Should have been able to download this file in an hour or less. Here I am four hours in only a third done.

I think everyone in my local area got home from work and started their downloads, wrecking the server right as I got to a third of the way in.

he sounds completely bored, it's easily the worst voice over in the game.

I agree. The only time he seems to get "Excited" is when a bunch of enemies are coming at you.

The rest of the time it's like he's just reading lines off a sheet - in a mostly deadpan tone.

They should have had him try a more animated voice. He's basically just talking in a normal tone with no inflections.

Oh wow!

Did the Devil's Lair strike, and even with all 3 of us at level 8, the Bosses were still HUGE bullet sponges. Shit was lengthy.

I got into the alpha and have played a few hours. I didn't have any issues with the download and it was really quick (less than an hour -- I do have a pretty good internet connection so that helps).

I have really enjoyed the first few missions. I wasn't initially all that interested in the game based on previous trailers, but was quite surprised at how much fun the game is. It went from on the radar to a likely purchase.

Wow. Been in MP not even 5 minutes and can already tell that the vehicles are OP as hell. What chance do you have against them?

I didn't really enjoy my time with this game tonight maybe I was under leveled for the mission I was on but it felt like a chore killing the "boss" enemies.

I'm having a lot of fun with this game. I usually hate shooters on consoles but this one I'm enjoying. I feel like I have a severe handicap playing with a controller though.

I just hit level 6 so I have to try Devil's Lair now, but wow am I really needing a keyboard and mouse to play this.

Played for about two hours and didn't see another soul the entire time. Even in the tower.

Fun exploring around since the area is enormous and with enough detail to make stumbling across rooms interesting.

There are messages about checking out bungie.net in reference to the grimoires that are obtained... is this live now, I can't seem to find anything on the site. On the same note, what do the ghosts you find in the field do? [Looked up a few posts and saw its alpha.bungie.net]

I'm seeing a lot of what could be callbacks to Myth, primarily in the names of stuff at the moment (The fallen, the [great] divide, the darkness, the blind steppes) but also I'm thinking the Traveler could be the Comet and Destiny is just another step in that cycle.

Ok first impressions, I should have picked up the gold headphones/mic today for this game.

First time I fired a gun it felt powerful, they got the dink in here doing voice work plus Abadon/Agent Broyles from Fringe as the main Vanguard in the tower. You got the voice actor from Mass Effect (tali's mom or commander) in the dock area

Anyway let me stop gushing, it's an alpha and I'm f'in hooked, I really should go get some sleep but this is better than expected, m expecting things just to get better with the beta. This game will such massive hours from my life.

Quick question, see some green boxes on the ground, drops, but I can't pick them up? Is that just ammo?

sucks that people are having internet issues. took me less than an hour on shitty comcast to get the full alpha. game is fun, its def made to play with friends tho. first mission took me an hour to beat because i was so low leveled and the flying dude was a bullet sponge.

The stage boss battles are difficult.. 3 of us are maxed rank (8) with very good weapons and it still takes 15-25 minutes and thousands of bullets to take it down. I guess this is how they get you to grind for better gear but it still sucks. visiting the tower and the PVP modes are a lot more fun. Is it possible to explore the world without having to fight the enemies?

Yeah, I share the sentiments on the gear and bosses. With max-level guns, full ammo, full skills and constantly getting crits, it took ~30 minutes to take down the spider tank, and another 30 minutes to kill the floating eye.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was a fun fight with lots of dynamic changes, but it was basically "shoot, hide behind wall and reload, shoot". For half-an-hour.

The initial playing was a great experience, but it might wear on me if every single encounter is like that.

You've got a few options.

1) Snipe/sneak up on and murk the driver

2) the Turrets positioned around the map

3) Heavy weapons/grenades

4) Supers

Try to keep an eye out and try to communicate with your team so you know where the vehicles are, and then you need to get out of their way if the above options aren't available to you. Don't run along the outskirts of Moon if you don't have to, and don't forget to use your speeder to run like a little girl if need be, just don't take them head on if you don't have anything to fight them with.

Not much. They take a lot of shots to take down, but I did my special move(L1+R1), completely fucked up some guy on the bike, instant death, and with some pretty good distance between us. I think the move even has a shield during the animation, and it happens pretty quick.

Super moves>Super bikes>Heavy guns>everything else

Edit: Are drivers exposed on ALL vehicles???

Yup this sums up perfectly how I felt and I wasn't even level 8. After getting the eye to half health and dying our squad just quit.

I can't stand the automatic and three burst shot rifles. I much prefer the heavy hitting single shot whatever you call em. I just find it much easier to land headshots with it.

I never imagined I would be having trouble obtaining loot on the lower end of the spectrum or be upset by that fact lol. It's so freakin' hard to get a level 8 weapon at the Cryptarch x.x

Edit: And by hard, I mean I haven't seen a single level 8 during my attempts buying greens. I've gotten level 8 gear before, but no weapons x.x So many 11s though.

Fearsome and I died a shitload, but its fun as hell. This shot up to #1 on my GOTY list, just from alpha gameplay. Sept 9th can't get here quick enough.

Yup, same. Game wasn't really on my radar until this week and after playing the alpha, it's easily my most anticipated game of the year.

Is there a crafting vendor in the Tower in the alpha? I have a ton of materials, but I can't seem to find anyone.

Finished downloading. I'm a very indecisive person. I've been at the menu screen for 5 minutes trying to figure out if I should be a Titan, Hunter, or Warlock

edit: Wait this ends on Sunday? I guess I only got tonight and maybe Saturday night to play, busy on Friday/Sunday.

Here's my impressions, and the only impressions you'll ever need:

-Feels like Warframe X Borderlands

-AI is pretty good

-Character models are extremely well done

-Menus are the best I've ever seen, really clean

-Looks weird (think cel-shaded) in dark areas

-Skyboxes are ridiculous

-Has a whole lot of heart

For being an alpha build, i'm pretty impressed. The score is absolutely amazing and the art direction and design are both fantastic. The only thing that's bothering me is the lack of 60fps. Now that it's basically become a "requirement" for all current-gen games, it's pretty hard to adjust to at first.

The chatter my character was giving during the first mission or whatever it's called was...dull. The delivery of the lines were poor, and the exposition through dialogue trick was...also poor, to put it kindly. I hope it was just a place holder.

The gunplay, it felt better than I was expecting. Shooters on this scale tend to have either weak gun mechanics, or guns that feel incredibly weak, have no weight, don't sound good, bad shooting and reload animations, etc. Bungie has it all right. I mean...it's Bungie. Adding on to all of that, the one thing I was looking forward to most and most cautious of was the enemy ai. Destiny gets compared to Borderlands a lot, and for understandable reasons. One of the things I hate about Borderlands
shitty memes aside
is that the enemies simply have ZERO hit-reaction. They do not stumble, fall, start shooting all over the place when hit, stop mid-shooting when shot, etc. This made every counter incredibly hard for no good reason, and always resulted in you constantly getting shot. In Destiny, all of these complaints are gone. I haven't played enough PvE to have formed an opinion on the actual intelligence of the enemies, but the aforementioned components alone are enough to have my interest.

Played two matches of PvP, had an awesome moment happen and the damn PS4 didn't record shit. Still, it was fun. I'm gonna log back on in a bit and play more, but from the first two matches, I had some fun. Protip: you don't HAVE to run in a circle with your team capturing the same points.

Loving the game so far. The lonely, ethereal atmosphere is pretty much what I felt when I played Halo for the first time. I don't know if this game will be as good as CE but the majestic landscapes and score lend themselves to that feeling of awe and discovery.

No complaints other than the occasional AI hiccups (and I mean a little more than occasional) and the enemy spawns. I understand the idea of zoning certain types of enemies to certain locations, but it's a little weird how certain enemies will invariable spawn in the exact same locations over and over. The Captain that always spawns outside the Cosmodrome sort of drives me out of the experience every time I see him.

I'm up to ETA 40 hours now, meanwhile my connection is fine and I can download files off the net at 2 megabytes a second.

Fuck. Must be my local Sony download server since I know not everyone is having this problem. Though I saw a few earlier in the thread like me.

Alpha Impressions: Note to self, do not go all digital anytime soon.
