Destiny: the taken kings new approach to story telling

Just curious what time with her? The 5 seconds you spend grabbing her bounty ?

She narrates the missions/strike and her background story is pretty great. She's probably the most interesting character to me so far. Really interested to see what happens next with her in TTK.

I think including the price you paid for the game at launch is quite unfair, because you're not spending £77 in one go. Almost half of that was done last year. Also, you've only played the original game. In the legendary edition, that equates to like a quarter of the whole package.

That doesn't matter. I bought Super Smash Bros U last year for £35. If in November I buy all the DLC currently out DLC for £35 (both compilations), I'm still spending £70 on one game, and for the record I don't like SSB's DLC pricing either.

Also, I've looked at the content in the expansion packs and it seems a bit disingenuous to claim that each expansion adds another whole Destiny to the vanilla. TTK seems pretty big but the first two only have about half of Destiny each.

Next year would be Destiny 2, not Destiny year 3.

And really when you think about it, TTK Legendary Edition has more content in it than 99% of games that charge the same price. Hundreds of guns, 20ish multiplayer maps, three raids, 8ish strikes, it`s a great way to get into Destiny.

It is unfortunate that you didn't like the original game, but you can't really fault Bungie for making a cheaper way for new players to get into their game.

I suppose not. It's not really much different to a game of the year edition in the grand scheme of things. It's just that vanilla Destiny was so lacking that you needed the first two expansions for it to feel like a full game and that just doesn't sit well with me.

Anyway, I'll leave you all to your Destiny discussion now.

TTK is Destiny 2. It's literally called update 2.0.

Then whenever they choose to scrap the base game's "story" and start anew.

Until that happens, there won't be any foundation in place to tell decent stories. It will feel completely disjointed, just like in the expansions.

I think they can salvage something if they retroactively go back through Destiny 1 and add cutscenes , new dialog , scanning in existing levels etc

I would definetely replay from scratch if some additional stuff was added (I'm talking 20 mins of extra stuff).

But I don't think bungie are doing that

Or that, but yeah we all know they'll never do it.

They've already butchered everything about the main game's lore and characters. That is what needed to be solid in the first place in order for the rest to work. I doubt people will care all of a sudden ; I know I won't.

The 20+ million of us that do play will attempt to bravely carry on in your absence.

We salute you, sir.

The Dark Below didn't add much besides the raid, but House Of Wolves added a ton to the game. The Taken King is adding so much and bringing so many new things that it very much feels like Destiny 2. Now is a great time to come back to the game.

So did they add new cut scenes/story and ghost dialogue for the original story? Will it be worth to play through the original campaign again? I hope so. Especially it told the story better.

Bit disingenuous to use the number of registered users. I'd imagine less than 20% of us are even active players at this point.

Right now, it is getting a bit thin in The Tower. I'm struggling to find anything to do since I've long since maxed out all the armor and weapons I've wanted to level, and have every exotic armor piece and weapon.

The 15th of September can't get here soon enough!

I enjoyed vanilla for about a month, and look forward to getting back into the game when all of the content is released and a complete edition is released. Once that is on sale I will get it. Then I can get my money's worth for what I spent at launch.

The gameplay itself is very enjoyable, but for what a lot of other games provide content wise I can't help but feel like I got ripped off.

My experience has been the absolute opposite having put in well over a thousand hours... I feel like I'm fleecing Bungie.

I've got the exact opposite problem. I just got back into Destiny lately and an rushing to get the year 1 achievements in time :P

The idea that you have to rebuy the game and buy expansions that you've almost certainly passed on to get a decent deal on TTK is ridiculous. $60/£35 might be considered good value for everything included in the retail version but that doesn't excuse the hoops you need to go through when all you want to do is give Bungie money to buy a single piece of DLC. The Taken King should be competitively priced and available to anyone who has a copy of the game, no ifs, ands or buts.

I honestly couldn't tell you 3 things the vendors say, combined.

And I also agree they should make Grimoir an actual part of the game. Can't be that hard to make a computer or something you can walk up to and press a button to open up the cards and scroll through them. Or make it available with your ghost popped up. It would definitely help the lack of a real story, and more people might actually understand it (cause I've played three characters and still don't know what's going on).

It actually is. Forty dollars US for more weapons than the original game, 3 new sub-classes, 6-7 hours of story content, 3 new strikes (4 on PS4), an extensive new patrol area and content, AND what's promised to be the biggest raid yet seems more than competitive.

There's a reason. The GAF Anti-Destiny Squad just regurgitates it again... and again... and again... and yep... again.

Every Destiny thread ends up covered in more fucking bile than Linda Blair's comforter.

As someone who doesn't frequent Destony threads, your continuous posts are intensely grating. If you think you're defending Destiny, I think you might want to step back and ask yourself if you're actually doing it any favors.

To the OT, I'm on the fence on coming back. I love what I'm hearing. I wanted so much to love that universe and story, but it was little more than vague allusions to a story. It's tough for me to believe they're going to fix that... But I want them to so much.

Did I miss it in this thread or did every one else notice that Luke Smith effectively said you will use Ghost like the Metroid Primer visor to get lore and back story in game.

They should go back to Year 1 content and add that in.

I am hoping that it's worth while to scan stuff, in Prime there was a ton, and a lot of it was satisfying, and I am not sure that Bungie can pull it off with the same effect.

That's good news, what I've seen of the lore is so cool, I just wish they did a better job telling it in game.

They're getting there. TTK looks like a large step in the right direction at least.

There's an event/mission about
one of the lost fireteam members (Praedyth) who went in the Vault of Glass with Kabr.
Could be great if done well because the VoG lore is some interesting shit.

For all we know, that might happen. Nolan North is redoing all of Dinklage's lines in vanilla Destiny so he could very well record some new lore stuff for the vanilla missions / areas

It really sounds like Destiny is making the right choices with TTK. Unfortunately it releases in the middle of September. If its good Ill wait for a steep discount.

I might get back to this if they're looking at fixing existing content but the possibility of this dropping on PC is holding me back.

For what its worth, have you checked out the grimoire cards? There are sites that archive all the cards in chronological order.

The story in vanilla Destiny is dogshit, but the lore and world building in the Grimoires are great, even if you never get back into the game itself.

So you'll be waiting until next year? I don't get these kind of posts, if the game is good would you really wait 12 months to save $20?

If a game is good it'll still be good in 12 months.

In Destiny's case the longer you wait the better, if the wait isn't a big deal.

Our new focus on storytelling: We're actually going to tell you the story this time.

It feels like they're finally getting around to adding the content that was 'cut'. Except it wasn't cut, it was just left on the shelf to eventually get put into the game.

So you might as well just never play it, because it'll be even better by then!

You get it just for owning the expansions and play TTK before March right?

Triumph emblem you get by beating all the story missions in Vanilla and both DLCs, as well as beating both raids on hard and PoE 35 on hard, and doing 50 public events, winning 100 games of crucible and getting all 20 golden chests.

I disagree completely..

I agree completely. But it isn't really a Neogaf exclusive thing.

Would you prefer more sycophantic drivel repeated instead?

I'd prefer the drive-by GAFers aim their nonsense elsewhere. I'll never understand the people on this board who, instead of actually participating in discussions of games they do enjoy, choose to instead drop into threads merely to troll that discussions participants.

I really hope that one day Destiny becomes the game it was originally meant to be. So far they have lost all my trust in them so I'll wait and see on this franchise for at least another year after how bad I felt about the base game.

Dunno about the your first idea. I do think many of us are going to be suprised at TTK and the direction Destiny is now going in. I have a few friends who want me to come back. If what I suspect is true, they'll be really pushing for me to come back.

I think Bungie may have found themselves again. It will take a bit to translate into results though. TTK looks to be a good start.

I'll believe it when I see it. They said they were bringing "Bungie's brand of storytelling in a brand new universe" before Destiny's launch and we all saw how that ended up.

Anyways, they lost enough trust from me that they're not going to get me back with the taken king and these promises. But if this turns out good (which I hope it does), I'm more likely to get back into it when the next few expansions have released.
