Details on Halo 5: Guardians matchmaking in Arena mode

So why are you guys assuming the person will be joining the losing team ONLY? I fail to understand how this is skill issue. The way its handled in Titanfall is, if you join the losing team. The loss does not register. Basically the way its set up right is, if someone leaves your team, you are fucked. But if someone joins mid match there is still chance to come back.

@bold please stop. Everytime I want to play Halo 5 Arena I have to find 3 people here on NeoGAF? What a fuckind dumb defense force.

I am not ranting, now I am even more annoyed at the defence force than slightly different then I would have liked matchmaking. But whatever it is what it is. Will still be one hell of a game.

Do you play video games? 9/10 of my join in progress games are the losing team. How often do you see winners leave the game?

Plus, it's not like we didn't have join in progress with Halo 4 and see how badly it worked. I'm tired of this forced homogenization of the genre. If another game scratches your itch more, play it or keep playing it. Don't expect every game to play the same as what you enjoy. Join in progress doesn't work in equal starts, fair and competitive Halo, period.

I don't like join in progress period. I play a shit ton of destiny and i auto leave every single game I join that already started unless I feel like I can win. In a year that's happened less than 10 times.

That game has no equal starts nor is it very competitive.

Please do explain why I have to be positive about awful garbage? Especially from a developer like 343?

To know the outcome of this "ranking" system, just look at Halo:Reach. An abysmal failure.

Placement matches are completely awful by default. Flip a coin 10 times and use that to determine a players rank? Fuck off.

No derank? Great, so little jimmy who magically gets placed in a rank far higher than he should ever because of the bullshit of placement matches is now stuck there, making his team lose constantly while getting completely shat on every game. That is fun for no one.

And that is assuming 343 can actually make the system function anything like they claim. Their record on that speaks for it self.

Halo 4, absolutely no skill based ranking or matchmaking.

MCC, completely broken ranks and matchmaking.

Halo 5 beta matching pros with people playing their first game.

So do tell me why I should be positive about this?

Hard to judge Halo 4 ranked matchmaking when you played very little of it, no?

Me too. I think join in progress, coupled with no ranks in games has led to me playing way more casually than before. Because there is no consequence. I can drop out because I know I won't be penalized, I know someone else will join. And because I can be put into matches half over where I lose right away, it means I don't care about win/loss either.

Watch as people are intimidated by ranks. Some people are actually so fearful of getting a low rank and being ranked, they avoid ranked games or playlists. They play social only. They'll say they don't care about ranks, but they care enough that they don't want to be publicly known for that rank. I feel it too sometimes if I'm honest. I hope Halo 5 turns it around. We go back to how it was for Halo 2 and 3.

I'm saying they literally added tons of Azure servers. When you played the beta, there wasn't enough infrastructure. We made changes to the code to improve that AND there are more servers now.

Also Xboxtradamus predictions:

Tomorrow

1. Scotland beats Australia in shock upset
2. Hawks win at home
3. Amusing Halo thing in the morning

Yes at number 3!!!!!!!!

Ah man....sunday morning? Hrrmmm new commercial???

"Losing games will cause your progress within a rank to decrease, but you will never drop down a whole rank from losing. For example, if you spend all month working your way into Silver, losing won’t drop you back to Bronze "

So , if you rank up from Silver to Gold for example , will you drop back to Silver if you perform so bad or once you rank up there is no way back ? I don't understand this part clearly.

In Australia yep :) also strangely if you preorder the Halo 5 console at EBGames you also get a free copy of fallout 4 which can be picked up on Fallouts release date

It seems pretty clear that losing games will not see you drop down from gold to silver, or from silver to bronze. Losing games when you're at the top of gold would see you go back downward through the tier, though, just never cross that boundary to the tier below.

What is unclear is whether any factors other than team success, such as individual performance, would indeed allow you to drop from gold to silver. That hasn't been clarified afaik. But my guess is probably not when it all gets reset each month - seems too short for that to matter.

I've been trying to understand some of the posts in this thread but I don't get it.

The way this announcement reads is that Arena is their hardcore, eSports style format. It's intensely competitive, meant for people who want to test and prove their skill. LoL and Dota don't have join in progress, nor do most other competitive ranked games. So obviously there will be harsh penalties for quitting and games will be started with full teams on each side.

This seems like a non-controversy to me - if you're playing "for fun," there are other game modes. How does it make sense to complain that the ranked progression mode is super strict and structured?

How do you complainers not understand that as you rank, and get don't quit yourself, you'll be pitted against other players who are the same? Equally skilled and not quitters.

There will 100% be quitters in games, and Halo 5 will have it too. You'll see then early on as well as people haven't seen what the punishments are.

Killer instinct had bad quitting issues but I don't remember the last time anyone quit a match since they put in the punishments and quit tracking a while back.

Yeah it is. Its on the ebgames face book and shit. Just checked. Happy days
And just got a response back from them. Console comes with fallout 4 available Nov 10 and collectors edition has digital and physical halo 5.

Wow sounds very organized and legit! Since there's no Titans and Warlocks to screw me every 5 seconds, this might actually get some serious play time from me >_<

I hope they nuke anyone lag switching because that pisses me off more than anything.

So, any of you Australians want to get rid of your digital Halo 5 copy then? I'd be interested in buying it off of you. PM me. :)

That's crazy that you get digital and physical. Canada has been horrendous the past two years for everything. We started the gen at US prices, and now games are easily $79.99+ without any changes to our cost of living, wages etc.

You Australians always get the best gaming deals...

You should check the game price in Australia. $100 AUD is more than $70 USD. That's why I prefer digital, HongKong store ftw.
Speaking of which, I need to find a way to cancel my fallout 4 digital preorder...

You will have to contact support for cancelling it, if you bought it digitally on the Xbox Store.

Notice that there are tiers to each rank though, which you can derank from.

It's not just Silver to Gold. It's Silver 1-6. That is where most people will get stuck. Reaching a Silver tier 6, then going on a losing streak and deranking back down to Silver tier 3. That person can derank all the way to Silver 1, but he won't get put back on Bronze no matter how many times he loses.

If they have such good player behavior detection this time, why can't we have friendly fire back on? I mean it's so awkward how no damage is dealt to players, so people feel free to let grenades and rockets fly without any worry about betrayals.

With ranks, and detection of bad behavior and the competitive nature of Arena, most griefing and betraying should be able to be nipped in the bud no?

Friendly fire is on. The article even mentioned shooting your teammate in the head for his sniper rifle.

Damn, I can't believe I missed that. Just never occurred to me that it implied friendly fire would be on again, after being off in the beta. Sweet. This is shaping up to be some of the best Halo in a while. Can't wait for BTB and Forge to come as well. Will really complete the whole experience.

I thought the irony was implicit.

I wish they'd throw a game in with the Elite bundle!!

I grabbed Halo 5 when Singapore had 20% off gift cards. It brought Halo 5 down to $56...couldn't complain about that.

Not true, a lot of join in my matches are right in the begining of the game when a full party leaves, you can still bounce back and have been part of come from behind victory games before in halo and other fps

How do you guys think casuals, people new to the series / caught up in the hype are going to react to bans from games? Seems extreme enough to push people away

Having to come from behind is an issue though. Would you rather start a match 0-0 or 30-15? I can't believe people are still arguing about JiP after the flack Halo 4 got for incorporating it.

They'll start with short bans surely. If they keep quitting then I don't care if they leave the game. They aren't the type of players I want to be playing with anyway.

So , there is only one way rank system between main segments (silver-gold etc) Once you rank up , you never drop back to your previous rank. Wish you could lose rank in H5 , that could be better..

If said casuals are constantly griefing teammates and quitting games... Adios to them. I hope they either stop being an asshole or just stop playing pvp altogether.

Is free Fallout 4 just an Aussie (oy oy oy) promotion?

Also, love the punishment for quitting games. Wish Bungie had the balls to do that in Destiny.

Yeah. As long as they're told why they're banned, then there's no issue. If their complaint is then, "well nobody told me that I'm not supposed to act like a twat", then the issue is with them, quite frankly, not the game or the way it chooses to enforce behaviour.

I guess it depends. By and large, the structure of the bans sound reasonable enough that anybody pushed away by them isn't someone I want in the MM population anyway. I could see it being disconcerting for people making a best-effort first entry and just keeps screwing up, but so long as the ban reasons are made clear, they should adapt quickly or... well, end up not being someone I want to play with.
