DF: Orbis vs Durango Spec Analysis

I knew this would come in handy, Sony is bring it back in style

Sexy.

I haven't seen PS4 people. -_-

This is the last major leak from me, and honestly, it's all I know:

25 x 14 x 10
external psu

Figure the dimensions out yourself and get to drawing :).

According to this bullshit it occupies a smaller area than the Wii U.

That... is thick o_O

Now that I think about it.. 4inches isn't thick. My original fat is a lot bigger I suppose.

Also, what's the good and the bad about an external PSU. Enlighten me boys.

My only complaint about them is I have to carry an extra brick around. Whereas, with my PS3 I have a million PC plugs to just swap out and what not.

I don't know if it's a hint towards stacking but I am certainly curious as to how they fit 4Gb GDDR5 in that small of a form factor without running into heat issues.

I was just wondering if stacking gives a power reduction of some sort? Or is there mobile GDDR5 that uses less power?

I doubt GDDR5 can be stacked. Maybe Sony is using a custom GDDR5 or something? Lower latency and power consumption, perhaps? I don't know. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

external psu? meh.

isn't there some stacking technology that is just getting ready for release 1H13? Its not something i can see Sony "adding". I just have no expectations for anything beyond 4. 3.5g vs 5gb isn't too big of a deal. If Sony can put their OS in a separate pool to not eat into the game ram that would help i guess too

It can't be. It's way too hot. There is no "mobile" version of it either. I think we'll see DDR4 stacked. It'll be super expensive for them at the start, but it'll drop in price pretty quickly and become much cheaper than GDDR5.

I could see them winding up stacking some other type of RAM, if it's ready in time. It just seemed to me that GDDR5 was their fall back after Amkor had some big delays with stacking a few months back. I'm also in the camp that isn't expecting more than 4Gb, especially if they speed up the BRD and utilize the decompression unit well.

Yea, cause technically if they still have the rumored 16gb of flash for patches and OS stuff, thuway will be wrong and have to eat his feathers.

RAM amount is a big deal. Consider me the happiest dead bird on the internet if I turn out to be wrong. However, Gopher, you should give us something a tiny bit more -_-.

I think the idea is that if they go stacking, they can get GDDR5 bandwidth out of DDR3 modules by using a crazy wide bus. The pictured 24 x 14 x 10 does vaguely resemble the SOC Oban form factor jeff_rigby's been going on about if you assume mm. Only problem is 10mm seems awfully thick even with stacking, but I don't know enough about it to be sure.

Are you hinting that nothing is set in stone? I thought PS4 was finalized?

:)

I have questioned the use of GDDR5 in the past. If the case is as small as rumoured it makes it even more unlikely.

Using DDR4 stacked would also allow more than 4GB too.....

Thuway did say a couple weeks ago, in the Edge rumor thread, that the RAM situation was fluid. Some people took that to mean more RAM, but it may have been referring to the type.

It's 4, as far as I know and have heard no different. If thing's change, I'll be more than happy to let you all know.

I don't get the external PSU hate. The smaller the machine the better. The less heat the better.

I can't wait to see this thing. The combination of it's rumored power and a sleek Sony design has me very intrigued. I want them to give me a reason to not even want the next Xbox. :P

Considering the recent Playstation redesign, and the rumors of a touchpad on the controller, I've still got some skepticism in me regarding how it's all going to come together.

Oh, I'm expecting 4 as well. This was a post you made a while ago so you've likely heard more solid stuff since then. I was just referencing that since a lot of people took it to mean you were hinting at more RAM, which I didn't think was the case.

So is there any indication that this will or will not be called the PS4?

I feel like Sony is dumb enough to pull a Vita on this, but then again I think they might not.

I can say this one more time:

Richard Leadbetter: "I have heard nothing about more than 4 GB of RAM."

So, Gopher, it's time for you to show us some sauce.

I have a feeling after seeing the sales performance and all the customer confusion surrounding the Wii U they likely dropped any other possible name.

And before anyone mentions the shi thing, it's absolute bullshit.

if they do stacking with ddr3/4 then going for 8gb should be no problem. Amkor is on schedule but they also told charlie at a conference that they will not package for sony or microsoft. Charlie from semiaccurate mentioned die stacking for ps4.

I hope there's some secret sauce left for those feathers, Durango doesn't seem to be using any :o

4gb of GDDR5 will be fine as long as the OS stays around 512mb. The bandwidth benefits are immense and it seems like Sony has added stuff like the zlib decompression unit to help with data streaming to make up for a lower pool of RAM. The only things I think that may wind up being higher than the specs we currently have are the speed of the blu ray drive and possibly a slight bump to the CPU. RAM and GPU are in good shape.

You guys are doing it again. The same way you misinterpreted thuway's post when he came back, you're misreading gopher's post. Wipe that wizzard jizz from those hype goggles. We will know more in 10 days.

Yeah, unless Thuway, BruceLeeRoy, or Kagari are hinting at stuff I'm not going to listen to anyone.

8GB GDDR5 is pointless and almost completely improbable. Not worth the expense, heat and complexity. Give me a better GPU for the money instead please!
