Did any game released in last two years [13-14] take over as your all-time favorite?

I'm just wondering if anyone else out there is like me.

Old: Chrono Trigger
The storytelling, aesthetic, music, and characters were all amazingly engrossing. The time travel aspect of the gameplay made the pacing some of the best I've ever come across in a video game. Once the ball got rolling, it was a thrilling ride to the finish. A game I've revisited probably yearly, and will likely continue to do so as the years go by.

New: The Last of Us
The storytelling, nuances in character development and emotions, varied locations in a post-apocalyptic world, and beautiful overall world are top notch. Joel and Ellie are completely perfect (thanks in huge part to their voice actors), and Left Behind is absolutely worth double the price of admission. It might not have as much replayability as Chrono Trigger, but the story here is one worth experiencing even for "casual" gamers. Not to mention the multiplayer, which is downright sublime. It is nerve-racking in the best way.

So what about you, GAF? Did any game in 2013/2014 take over as your favorite game of all-time?

OLD: Half-Life 2--Just a remarkable experience that I replay each year for nostalgia!

NEW: TLoU, however, I still have feels like an MF for HL2. I cant say that it has taken over 100%, but its close. Such a great story and the character interactions and relations were remarkable. I dont see playing it year after year though, like HL2, so this could change!

Old: Kingdom Hearts 2. The challenge, fun, and joy of playing it was unmatched.
New: Metal Gear Rising. I was never expecting to love the game so much. Every part of the game is so solid, and its the first one I have actually played more than once in years.

OLD: Metal Gear Solid. I played it when I was young and loved the stealth gameplay and bosses. The older I got, the more I liked it. Over time I grew an appreciation for the voice acting, characters and story as I began to understand it more.

NEW: I'm not positive if this is my #1, but after I played The Last of Us, I turned to my girlfriend and said "this just may be my new favorite game." Now that some time has passed, it's still way up there, still possibly above MGS. The story telling, voice acting, stealth and gun play. All of it came together as such a great experience. What a fun yet heart wrenching game.

to be fair, I'll be comparing games of the same genre

old:

Secret of Monkey Island

while not the best adventure game even back then (that honor belongs to Sierra), it was one of the nice comedy-slapstick adventure games that provided an entertaining experience. It remained as one of my favourite adventure games. But it failed to provide an emotional attachment to any character. Same for MI2 except the ending (poor Lechuck). While Day of the Tentacle had better characters but was limited in scope and story. Only Loom was to my liking in character development.

new:

Blackwell Epiphany

Last part of the Blackwell series, it was my second favourite after Unbound. It had both comedic moments but also pretty emotional and tragic moments as well. If I combine all the parts, that adventure game should belong to the classics and has surpassed Monkey Island 1 at least.

That's a tough call.

I've been gaming for so long that I'd be hard-pressed to definitively announce an All Time Favorite to begin with. I often bounce between Zelda: Link to the Past, No One Lives Forever, ES: Morrowind, Galaga arcade, etc. Depending on my mood, any of these games would fit just fine at the top of my list.

I will say this though, Farming Simulator 2013 can now comfortably enter that eternal battle for top spot. And that's the first game in many years that can make such a claim.

It didn't overtake it but I now hold The Last of Us in as high regard as I do Metroid Prime, which is the biggest complement I can gove a game.

F... F... Farming Simulator? Is this like a FarmVille meets SimCity or something?

In the last two years? Definitely not. The closest would be Dark Souls II, but I still prefer the original.

Planescape: Torment going strong still. Probably been like 3 games to get in my top 10 in the last decade.

Not too far off.

You manage and expand your own farm. Buying more land and equipment as you make profits from your output. It's hands-on though, as you pilot all the vehicles yourself or alternately hire A.I. workers or take your game online to play with others.

It's hard to believe but the game is an absolute dream.

The Last of Us is certainly a special game that I will remember for a long time to come, but my GOAT is still Final Fantasy XI. I had an amazing four years with that game.

I got a link to my top 50 favorite games on my homepage if you click my name(if you're curious)

Doom is the one that rose the highest, actually knocking Sonic 3 and Knuckles down to 11, since its just more replayable for me nowadays. Brilliant video game, still better than 90% of the FPS that came out of its wake, and smarter, too. Lot of great user-made content 21 years after release keeps it fresh and exciting.

The Last of Us, Super Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, and Bayonetta 2 are all excellent and taken up various spots on my all-time list as well.

Chrono Trigger still #1 tho. Replayed it this year just to be sure, its still about as close to perfect as any video game has gotten.

The Wonderful 101 is really close to my all time favorites of Heretic/Hexen and MoHAA, because of the sheer love for video games the game clearly projects. Plus it has one of the best obtuse control schemes of all time. The game never stops giving or forget why we play games.

Not 13-14, but if you go back a year or two then yes. Before that there was a large hole though.

I think DKC: Tropical Freeze is my new favorite platformer ever (over SMW), but favorite overall? I need t think about it some more.

TLoU is probably one of my favorites as well, and it's not just the story or the "experience" as some like to say, the gameplay itself, gunplay, the dynamic combat, all of it was very very good and satisfying, game is masterful in every way.

It didn't take over as my all time favorite, but The Last of Us managed to leap right up near the top alongside Dark Souls (my FOAT) and Ikaruga (my previous FOAT).

old-favourite;

counter-strike

new-favourite;

titanfall

i keep buying other games, but as my wife says "he only has eyes for titanfall!"

[edit: i've always been an online multiplayer fps focused PC gamer]

Old: The Legend of Zelda (NES)

New: Dark Souls

I know it didn't come out in the past two years, but I only got around to playing it a few months prior to DS2 coming out. I have Demon Souls and DS2, but there was something about the way that everything clicked in DS that it feels just about perfect, despite the often terrible framerate.

Man, it's hard for anything to beat Link's Awakening DX for me.

Guacamelee got real close though. I love that game to death!
Bayonetta 2 as well.

Not really sure what my favorite game is, but Demon's Souls was one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had, and I cannot remember feeling that way in a long time.

Not sure what my favourite game is, but all the contenders are from before 2010 so definitely not. Only The Last of Us would even merit an honourable mention if I wrote a top 20 list, apart from possibly Hearthstone. Much bigger possibility of a challenge next year.

Not quite sure it's my new favourite but I definitely gained a new second favourite.

Old: Metal Gear Solid 2

New: Persona 4 Golden (it came out in 2013 in the UK)
