I used loved a lot of his stuff. I never got into the "My Teacher is an Alien" series, but I treasured the "Bruce Coville's Book of ..." series. There were some extremely good stories in those books.

I loved the entire My Teacher is an Alien series, but this one most of all because of how different the tone as compared to most kids books. It was an extraordinarily dark children's book. The premise was to determine why humanity was so intent on killing each other. The book was disturbing when describing a horrific scene of a woman in a torture chamber, the state of the world's food supply, and the nature of war. If there was ever a time when I doubted humanity as a child, it was when I read this book. Damn good book.

That's one of the things I really loved about his writing. He gave kids some credit and was unafraid to write about the darker parts of relationships and the world in general.

Did you guys ever get one of those moments when you could actually feel part of yourself change from a kid to an adult? Almost like a pop. It's usually when you see something violent or sexual, and it kind of wakes up this part of you that you didn't know was there.

A couple of his stories (and stories in the "Book of" series) gave me those kinds of feelings. One of them kept on talking about how an elf boy really, really liked this pretty elf girl. She didn't like being seen with him though, and all of the other elf kids made fun of him and beat him up. Towards the end of the book, the boy meets a troll, and they go back to the school and start eating all of the other elves. He sees the pretty elf girl, devours her, then wipes his mouth with a hunk of her blonde hair.

Good stuff!
