The Worst Witch is an ITV television series, running from 1998 to 2001, about a group of young witches at an academy for magicians called Cackles Academy.

The television series stars Georgina Sherrington and Felicity Jones, and is based on The Worst Witch series of books by Jill Murphy (published from 1974). It aired for a total of 40 episodes spread over three television series between 1998 and 2001, before being followed by its sequel Weirdsister College.

Most episodes revolved around the academy, following the adventures of the worst witch ever, Mildred and her friends. The television series was later followed by The New Worst Witch, which ran for two series and chronicled the experiences of Mildred's younger cousin Hettie as she attended the school.

I think it's a great series and it's still very good... And ahead of its time, since Harry Potter hadn't been released yet.

My daughter was into this a few years ago, but it was a more recent series on BBC iPlayer with Bella Ramsey. I must have seen every episode of the first three series multiple times, but she didn't like season four after Bella Ramsey got famous and was swapped for a new actress.

I hadn't realised it was previously done by ITV. Also a 1980s TV movie with Tim Curry and Fairuza Balk, according to IMDB. I shall recommend them to my daughter, although she may have grown out of it by now.

Seems highly likely that Harry Potter was inspired by this, although JK Rowling has never acknowledged it.

Read the books when I was a kid.

When Harry Potter arrived many years later I was very confused as to why nobody else thought it was total ripoff of The Worst Witch
