Digg shuts down for a 'hard reset' because it was flooded with bots

I was one of the "groundbreakers" who signed up initially. The site definitely had issues and a lack of features, but they are claiming they didn't realise just how bad the the influx of bots would be. Staff laid off, site shut down with a writeup on the landing page explaining the situation. What a total shitshow.

They decided to launch Digg again. They did a pre-beta signup for "groundbreakers" which cost $5 (all proceeds went to charities of the communities choice). From memory I think this was early-mid last year. Then a few months back they opened it up publicly and allowed community creation.

What's Digg?

Digg is to Reddit what MySpace is to Facebook. An early social media/news aggregator site. It was a pretty popular site back in 2005-2010.

Ah, I see. I'm a bit on the older side, so I should know this, but I was absolutely never on the Internet during this time. Worked constantly, got married, and then joined the Army during that era, completely lost touch with the rest of the world, only reconnected when my daughter was born in 2011, as I, ironically, ended up with far more time on my hands as a parent civilian than I had as a soldier with no kids -_-.

I assume it was better than reddit? Better community or something? What's the draw here? Just nostalgia maybe? Thanks for the explanation by the way.

No problem! Digg had its problems for sure (mainly that a few prolific posters controlled most of the content, and everyone hated their 2010 redesign that was catered to advertisers). There's a good reason Reddit stole Digg's thunder so quickly.

I just think nowadays almost all the subreddits are echo chambers filled with keyboard warriors who love downvoting anything that goes against the groupthink. Most comments are low effort, unfunny attempts at humor. Not to mention tons of karma farming bots. There's zero sense of community — I couldn't tell you the name of a single member across any of the subs I belong to. There's a lot of opportunity for an alternative to be superior.

Yeah, I believe that was when they opened up fully and started allowing community creation. It was very dead, but I was under the impression it was going to be a slow burn and they were going to attract people steadily while adding more features and making improvements. Ah well.

Is it any better than Reddit?

No. In my opinion it lacked a lot of basic features. Mod tools basically non-existent. Weird design choices. Mixed messages from the admins surrounding AI usage. Whole thing felt very lacking, but there was a decent little community there, and it's a shame they've sacked it off so early.
