AOL is finally shutting down its dial-up internet service

I remember when I fist got dial up and I played age of empires two a whole month on the net and got a huge bill at the end of it

It was crazy going from dial-up to cable. Nutters.

They composed the bulk of my Monster Rancher repository, probably have the binder index laying around somewhere lol.
Wish I had known as a kid the aol disc's could be used for Monster Rancher that would have been a lifesaver. I would always just dump the disc and keep the case for storage purposes.

I had a great time on AOL, way back in the ancient times.

I still have an entire box full of AOL/WOW/etc trial discs, probably about 100-150 of them. Not sure why I felt the need to keep all of those..

I played the modem sound to my sister's kids and they nearly died laughing. It really seems like a sick joke that we were forced to listen to the most horrible tune every time we wanted to look up something online.

I loved that noise. To me it symbolized access to a whole new world - a world of seemingly infinite possibilities. Whenever I wasn't home, it was the noise I wanted to hear, the first noise I wanted to hear.
