Digital Foundry is no longer controlled by IGN

I never understood their payment/business structure in the first place. They were owned by Eurogaymer/IGN but ran a DF specific Patreon like an indie Youtuber. Who was getting that money? I'm assuming them, cause otherwise why on God's green earth would people be Patreoning IGN/Eurogaymer money? But then they were also all presumably drawing fat salaries and benefit packages from their corporate owners, so why were people also paying them Patreon bucks?

Just an incredibly bizarre structure no one has ever been able to explain, I've mentioned this in several threads at this point.

I think IGN just had an ownership stake in the company. So DF would have been responsible for generating income and paying wages.

Yeah, I aint never paid

I thought that they were independent all along, only Rich and John being with Eurogamer - I know that they were bought by IGN, but still

Nice for them

Means nothing btw.

Why did I have it in my mind that Digital Foundry was controlled and owned by Eurogamer?? I must've been living under a rock.
They were but EuroGamer's parent company was owned by GAMERS Network, and then sold, and some point ended up under IGN, so IGN owns EuroGamer and Digital Foundry from that. DF have now bought out their shares with a private shareholder so they can just be their own thing now.

Maybe now they can finally learn how ray tracing works.
Come on bro, we just playfully roasting alex bugaga here, he is big boy, he can take it :D
I watch their yt channel all the time, including podcasts, enough to remember their own coworker(that german guy Audie) made a meme with rich's face and aloy fat meme face, its fine to joke around :)
They provide us with tons of legit data/content, and yup sometimes we gotta take their subjective opinions with ocean of salt, but thats fine, we are human beings with proper brains, we can come to our own conclusions after all =]

Hell yeah, this is awesome news. Super happy for them!

Excellent news. They have some cringe takes which I'll gladly roast them for (John thinks fucking Yooka-Laylee is a better platformer than DKCR—nearly made me lose all respect for him) but DF do great work.
I don't care for all their content but I do watch their face-offs/technical reviews for the latest games. I think it's fair to say they help create awareness and healthy discussion around the technical aspects of games, which is a good thing.
Mark Cerny himself watches DF. Says it all.

I don't think so cause their Patreon is fairly recent and would have only grown to something approaching self sufficiency much more recently. Obviously they were funded in their entirety by Eurogaymer long before they launched a Patreon, and certainly haven't been anywhere close to self funding themselves from the Patreon this whole time. They've definitely been drawing salaries and benefits from EG/IGN. At best they may have bought a stake in the brand/company from EG when they launched the Patreon. I suspect that may be why they launched the Patreon in the first place, gave EG an ultimatum that they all walk and start a new business if they don't sell them a percentage and let them run/keep a Patreon for themselves.

Good. Since the IGN thing I thought a lot of their videos became ultra-bland. Found myself watching far less of it. Got to wonder if the Nintendo infomercial debacle had a lot to do with this change.

Now they just need to get rid of Alex, give Tom some more meaty stuff and do more Retro episodes. Well aware this is probably not "good business" but I don't give a fuck. Make things I like and bollocks to everyone else.
and df retro more or less was dead

Will their videos be shorter as a result? I used to like them when they were doing shorter videos, now all their videos are basically podcasts.
I have resorted to just clicking on their other channel, DF Clips, as I don't really have that much interest in watching such long podcast like videos. There are usually 2 or 3 sections of interest, so using that channel is better for me.

Can someone point me out what did IGN prevented them to do or how it made the channel worse?
As explained in the video, it's more expanding on things they wanted to do, John has wanted to expand DF Retro and possibly even do a bi-weekly podcast about Retro news in games/translations/hardware/controllers, etc and Rich is OK with that but they were told by IGN that they wouldn't be funding that as "no one is interested in old games" despite them showing the numbers for DF Retro videos. They've also wanted to expand PC coverage but were denied and wern't able to hire more people, something they're now looking out for, expanding the team and exploring the ideas they've wanted to before that were shot down.

Oh, Thanks, I haven't checked the video because when it's just them talking I tend to lose attention (they speak so calmly and with such a deep bass, damn).

I hope that means Linux gaming will be covered, if they push it, it probably is gonna get more traction, right now I can't stand Windows gaming unless I have to and so many of the stuttering issues they report are tied to Windows gaming and DX12, so if they test in both it would help aleviate some PC gaming trolling from console players.

It's tough. I wanted to discuss whether DF was "bought" by Nvidia or not, but people would rather discuss the Apex Bugaga's skirt and whether or not it likes to be fucked in the ass.

While you're hysterical about each other's asses, you're getting closer to being slaves to the boss.

Will always get a pass for me for his unashamed Sega & PC bias. His time at the helm of Sega Magazine and especially Sega Saturn Magazine were great days. And taken much further with UK:Resistance :messenger_beaming:
He was there in CVG writing about Commodore too, I should check if I still have some mags left! 🤓

I still give them a free pass for the excellent advocacy for consistent frametime that they've done. They've opened the eyes of many industry people and it had a remarkable positive effect.

With that said, on practically every other fronts, they're completely out of their depth. I'm surprised no youtube channel made by real industry experts didn't swoop in and ate their lunch, because oftentimes DF's analysis is really bottom of the barrel.

finally, now they can review Hogswarts.

DF Retro and when they discuss Saturn and Sega are always good times. But like most, I am mostly interested in their Retro content. I actually find their pixel break downs as part of the problem with the industry, constantly chasing graphics.
