Digital Foundry: Metaphor ReFantazio - Fantasy Persona... But What About Performance? - DF Tech Review

The usual technical details stab from DF that has nothing to do with the quality of gameplay, if we get 15x the amount of contents we get from the usual dramatical graphics of other games with much less contents even in 2024 then who cares? I like euro cars, muscle cars metrics are garbage and rarely tells useful information.

Does a game that looks like....uh... this... really need a performance analysis? That should run on my electrical toothbrush......

I can't help but feel you are mocking me for that incident with those zealots in that other thread, but surely I can't be the only one tired of half assed efforts, especially on things that would be easy to implement. Also I have not watched this video yet, so maybe you are not. Either way /shrug.

Edit - Having read a few more comments, I am guessing you are not, mayhap I should have read more before posting. Still amusing giving the shit I got in that other thread.

My man, I don't even know who you are lol. What are you talking about exactly?

Should the xbox app version be ok? I guess i can work some magic on my pc? I've bought on xbox so I own on both. Not bothered to go crazy on ini tweaks just in game settings?

Interestingly, as with Elden Ring, running the PS4 version of the game on PS5 locks 60 fps but the resolution drops all the way down to 1080p and there are noticeable decreases in NPC rendering distance and texture quality

Realistically they should have moved this game to UE like P3R and SMTV:V used instead of keeping it on the decrepit P5 engine but I guess they figured 8 years development cycle was long enough so they just released it. This game is just so technically underwhelming in 2024, especially compared to the other 2 Atlus RPG's released earlier this year

You see? That's why numbered MC / Review scores mean nothing to me. No way a game is a 10 if its a technical mess.
Completey agree it's a pile of shit.

If this was any other product and it worked but the performance was shite reviewers would dock points for that.

I think the other issue is some game devs gets special treatment, whilst some other devs would get eviscerated for bad performance.

Technical garbage - 94 metacritic lol..

Same situation as with Elden Ring, game shouldn't get scores like this if it's a mess from tech perspective.

I don't know. I had more fun with and more mileage out of Elden Ring than any game released that year and beyond. I think perf ultimately isn't the most important thing. Its a disappointment for sure, I always hope IQ and framerate are good but i'll suck it up, and then play the game anyway. Bloodborne was and is beloved as well, moreso than many games with flawless performance, i'd choose it over a polished turd any day of the week.

If high end PCs can't get stable framerate (without intervention from modder who fixed game made by large development team using millions of dollars and many years) I doubt Pro will change this.

I don't have any doubt that it's a great game but games should be scored in many aspects: tech (performance), music, gameplay, story etc. Performance is a big thing and I think reviewers should score games with this in mind.
True but I play on PC because modders can fix games.
Maybe this will be a Deadly Premonition 2 situation?

Sometimes I have to wonder if devs put aside a few hours to play their own game.

"Looks great to me on a 4k TV, what's AA?"

Maybe they are using 1080p tvs (it may look good with downsampling)?

I think it's obvious for games with HDR, half of them have raised black levels like they "master" them on cheap LCDs.

Shin megami v looks better...

Native 4k with TAA and 60fps, for sure.

Using mediocre PS3 engine in 2024 wasn't a good idea. UE4 gave them much better results, fuck even Soul Hackers 2 on Unity runs better than this.

Interestingly, as with Elden Ring, running the PS4 version of the game on PS5 locks 60 fps but the resolution drops all the way down to 1080p and there are noticeable decreases in NPC rendering distance and texture quality

The only positive ill say about Metaphor is the rendering is doing a lot more than Persona 5 and any other game from them. The city in particular is large with a lot of detail. Don't get me wrong it's not super impressive but it's a step up from P5 and has bigger areas than P3R.

However- there's no god damn excuse for the atrocious image quality due to no AA. Honestly guys, as much as I like Atlus games, we have to stop supporting piece of shit optomization like this. It's 2024 and this is PS5 ..i think it's downright disrespectful and they aint getting my money if they can't get a simple thing like AA right!

Between stuff like this and expecting PS5 players to buy P5 Royal for a SECOND time to play at 60 fps ...? Atlus is a shitty studio.

Your special console isn't going to fix code
Don't insult daddy ps5 pro like that

To be fair I would play this on PC but Atlus games feel most at home on the big screen for me 🤷 DF seem to believe it's gpu limited, long as Atlus don't put out a resolution bump for pro it might be a solid 60

I pre-ordered a PS5 copy after watching the IGN review. So many reasons for me to support this game, for me as a creative, ideologically, supporting Atlus, a new IP, experimental visually and content-wise, 80hr long campaign, Shoji Meguro, glowing reviews,...
(...)
This seems like a really wild passion project. My guess is that the devs are working hard on adressing the performance hiccups.

You know how the press and metacritic work.
I have this game preordered but it's clear that Atlus atm is a press/critics darling and as such you won't see objective complaints for the fact the game technically is PS3 level or that in about a year they'll release a complete edition at full price without cross compatible saves.
All things for which other publishers would be docked points.
In the end the most important thing is that the game is engaging and fun.

I LOVE Elden Ring but this shit was unplayable at launch on PS5, constant stutter (I had to play PS4 version in BC). VRR fixed most of the issues but this happened months later and needed "special hardware".
Please. It was far from "unplayable".

You and some others have lost the plot when it comes to gaming. Sorry mate.

No, hes right. Story, gameplay, audio and technical presentation all matter equally for us normal people. Not saying metaphor is a pos tech wise, but there were games that ran like absolute dog shit, ofc, a rating should reflect that. Common sense.

Many of us were saying so before the first review was published based on the demo.
I mostly ignore scores and don't get too heavily invested in review wars, but if people can't even tolerate any discussion on this game possibly being overrated then I guess nothing is overrated.

It's literally built on a copy of a 10 year old PS3 game, with nearly identical battle system, dialogue system, social link system, game structure. It runs poorly technically, which I agree isn't a huge deal but after seeing how much loading screens matter to people interested in Starfield, I continue to be absolutely baffled that a current gen $70 RPG with $100+ special editions is getting such a gigantic free pass for dropping the ball on loading, texture detail, frame rate, resolution.

We're know that the gameplay is going to be nearly identical to Persona 5 with some nice tweaks and updates. Gameplay-wise alone I could see that being a 8/10 or so if we're generous considering it has nothing really going on in the level design or dungeon design, meaning that all that is left is writing and story to give it a +14 bump. That has to account for the giant score boost making it among the best games ever made. It's just kind of hard to believe that is truly the case. Guess we'll see. I guess the game is entirely immune to criticism, and honestly Persona has been like that for a decade so none of this surprises me.

They don't feel the need to improve. Look at this thread - lala land where game is amazing
Or people played the game and liked what they played. You also love to shit on FROM games, you free not to like them but that doesn’t mean everyone else needs share your opinion.

Don’t like it, don’t buy it….end of story.

Yet everyone can recognize that the game experience is impaired due to it. I loved elden ring because I played the ps4 version on ps5, but if the ps5 version was the only thing that existed I may have just dropped it. JP game makers need to recognize that this is a significant deficit in their games and if they really want to have success they need to address it. I'm not buying a $500 console to experience stuttering in a game that looks like this. And the worst thing is this is such an easy thing to fix.

The fact that it has a strong reception despite this kind of tech shows how good the game is.

Ocarina of Time ran with a 20fps frame rate cap, what a piece of shit miright?

Is that what we're going with now? This is the next Ocarina of Time level of game?

Again your money and your choice, I’m not bothered by performance imperfection, I played many games with performance issues and still end loving them like Bloodborne and Monster Hunter World on PS4.

Heck Shadow of the Colossus had terrible performance on PS2 and yet still one of the best games out there.
