Digital Foundry vs Metro Redux

With what, black magic? They aren't going to be able to suddenly increase the pixel count by 40%.

Diablo 3 will do it on X1. Launch Patch 900 => 1080p
Assassis Creed 4 did it on the PS4 ;)

So yes => it´s possible that games can be optimizes during launch period.

Man, the XOne is a really fucked up console in terms of resolutions. What happened? I thought it had a very similar architecture than the PS4...

Very similar, but not the same. Weaker GPU [much larger performance gulf than x360 vs ps3], more complicated RAM, and only 32MB is fast enough for framebuffer [which is reason why some engines demand drop to lower res]. In this case, they most likely dropped the resolution so that framerate can remain at locked 60.

921p? Wtf is up with these funky X1 resolutions? Hopefully they can reach 1080p, pre or post release.

Sure... they can always up the resolution to 1080p. But in order to maintain 60fps, they would have to start cutting visual effects down. And that is a big no no. Devs are much more comfortable in reducing the resolution, and then claim that effects of that res drop are very small [or insignificant if they believe that their user base is full of blind people].

Man if the only difference this gen is going to be 1080p vs 900p then I don't think the xbox one has anything to worry about, and it was seriously put down on here. The performance difference may have been drastically exhagerated in real world performance.

I would put money that the average user could not notice the difference between the resolutions of 1080p and 912p (lol)

912p is a weird one but the 60fps is worth it.

I hope remasters target 60fps on both consoles and give the XB1 whatever weird resolution it needs to hit it.

Better GPU, Better performing CPU, Easier to developer for happened. Being similar in architecture doesn't mean same power.

Diablo 3
Destiny

this is going to be another dumbass res thread even though we knew it was around 900p months ago.

Well it's not anymore so....
while Xbox One currently stands at a curious 912p native resolution - that would be something in the region of 1620x912 (assuming square pixels). The original plan for Xbox One was to ship at 900p, but the June XDK update (returning the Kinect GPU resources to developers) has allowed for a tiny resolution boost - our guess here is that 4A opted to bank the additional resource to help lock down that all-important frame-rate rather than really push the pixel-count. If so, that's the right trade.

I can. Battlefield 4 is noticeably more blurry than any other PS4 game I've played.

Really? I actually found BF4 to have really good IQ on the PS4. Not quite as crisp as Infamous or TLOU:R, but I don't remember it having the blur, or the "vaseline-filter look", that's usually associated with upscaled 900p.

Great to see that 60fps is indeed 60fps. I would welcome more such remasters.

I doesn't look bad by any measure, but it is easy to tell it isn't native resolution.

Rock solid 60fps and 1080p on PS4, very nice indeed. Got Last Light via PS+ and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll be really tempted to pick this up.

I wasn't going to get this because I've already played them and I didn't enjoy Last Light very much, but this does look like a great port.

I imagine the xbone had performance issues before the update. As an xbone owner I would easily take 900p at 60 fps any day of the week over 1080 at 30.

Still have the PC versions in my queue, curious to see if its worth forgetting about them and moving to the new versions on ps4.
That's a comparison I want to see.

LL? Probably not worth it, play it on PC if you paid for it, but I preordered 2033 Redux for PC despite owning the original. Also you can get the upgrades for 50% off on Steam, either both in a pack or separate.

Don't ask! You'll derail the whole thread - suffice to say that while they are kissing cousins in terms of being AMD based, etc. there are significant memory differences among others that make the PS4 more powerful in a number of key areas respective to rendering videogames and game performance

Apparently, Destiny, though I fail to see how Bungie got a ~50% increase out of a ~10% performance boost.

There's no way (even with the assistance of MS engineers) that Bungie managed any such thing. Destiny has clearly been designed cross-gen and was always going to be fairly close. Not all games will utilize all the power difference and based on the Beta Destiny is going to be one of those that doesn't. When it launches finally I guess we'll see if the PS4 gets a few extra effects or whether they settle for full parity.

I expect a reasonable number of games will always be more on less on par between PS4/XB1 with only minor differences. At the same time there will be enough big titles pushing graphics - and obviously big Sony exclusives - to show the difference for those who care.

Oh, I've only played 2033 and was thinking about getting the PS4 remaster of Last Light. Sorry for going off topic, but what's bad about it?

I think it is too heavily scripted compared to the first. You have an annoying AI companion with you for half the game that basically squawks at you in an awkward Russian accent (including customary BYLEYHYHs).

So, (1920 * 1080) / (1620 * 912) = 1,4035 --> PS4 pushing about 40% more pixels than Xbox One?
Makes sense. The PS4 has ~40% more power than the Xbone.
What's really ...weird, is the 912p resolution of the Xbone version.

=
Why do you keep doing this? Xbone is 40% weaker than PS4. The PS4 game features 40% more pixels.

Still on the fence about picking up the redux bundle on Steam. It's 50% off to those who own 2033/Last Light.

Where is that cloth physics gif when a man needs it?

It's not weird, more pixels = more clarity.

Everything between 540p to 1080p doesn't scale perfectly on a 1080p display, whether it be 900p or 912p; there's nothing wrong with 912p compared to a flat 900p.

Apparently, Destiny, though I fail to see how Bungie got a ~50% increase out of a ~10% performance boost.

Biggest factor was probably the help from the Microsoft engineers to get 1080p on that twisted architecture; 10% boost would not do so much.

Yes, I know. Still, the number "912p" is funny, imo.

Ya whenever I fire up BF4 on ps4 it seems like a blurry Vaseline mess to me I'm always shocked how noticeable it is

Really nice remake/remaster/whatever you want to name it.
Hate to hark on this again, but metro 2033 on PC ran quite well for what it was graphically doing (minus one option, the advanced depth of field).
So many of the lights were volumetric, so many of the lights cast shadows, the shadow resolution was huge, full screen effects were done at native resolution... etc...

While metro last light added lots of great graphical features (the bokeh, the tesselation on nearly everything (which will be improved in redux), the new particle lighting) and of course tightened up the code to make effects run better, it also removed and toned down some of the sample counts.

Shadows are not as high res, there are less volumetric lights, the volumetric lights do not appear to run at native res, etc...
This makes me wonder if 2033 redux will have its original (heavy) effects in place with an upgrade or if they'll be replaced with last light's effects with an upgrade. For the PC version ;)

Destiny is hardly pushing the systems though. It is about as cross-gen as Watchdogs is, although I think it is definitely the prettier game. It will be interesting to see what Res AC Unity runs at, given how impressive that game looks.

I doubt we will see anything other than parity with MS having marketing rights to AC now.

Two properly remastered games and DLC at a constant, rock solid 60fps for £30. I'm gonna be touting the hell out of this game.

4A are our new gods now.
